I picked up a MSS #2 (Nov, 1938 - Frank R. Paul cover) today at a local show. Here’s my 1-3 run @Ameri

This isn’t an official red circle but I’ll park it here. Manvis Publications (which was still a Goodman production), April - 1941 one shot. It has wonderful Kirby and Schomburg interior sketches. Somewhat of a common later pulp…but this 1st season (episode 29) of Star Trek reminds me of the creatures on the cover of the Uncanny Stories @Ameri

This arrived today. 

Marvel Stories (Nov, 1940) 

-JW Scott cover 

- on the stands roughly same time as Marvel Mystery Comics #13 

- interior sketch credited to Simon & Kirby 

- nice skinny house ad for Marvel (Mystery) Comics  

- Carl Burgos Human Torch comic strip which advertises Marvel (Mystery) Comics. Goodman was already excelling in cross marketing amongst his products - something he would rampantly do in the Marvel silver age. There are at least two other westerns that have the Burgos Torch strip, and these are both cheaper than the Marvel Stories (but may be a little more difficult to locate):

The sidebar along the spine was becoming a Goodman trademark. The Marvel Stories sidebar text reminds me of Marvel Mystery Comics 9 (July, 1940) @Ameri

What's the difference for the collectors of these between Red Circle and just Goodman's pulps in general, are they just after the ones with the logo? Or most in proximity to the birth of the comics?

Personally, I prefer books with the red circle logo, and older the better.  Reminds me of these fun archie horror books

Red circles were most prominent by Goodman from 1937-39. I do like those pulps, but I also enjoy the historical context of Goodman pulps from 1933-36 as well under his various publisher names Star Magazine, Western Fiction, and so many more.

Nine red circle pbs in all is what I'm seeing in Warren's. 

There's a handful of good ones - my second fave after Passion in the Dust, Louise Alston cover (not my copy).  Looks like a tough one...:

Those are all cool but they pale in comparison to Leg Artist, the best Red Circle PB by a mile.

The numbering is a bit of mystery that will probably never be solved. Here's a few more cool ones. #2 is the first fiction title...

#7 is the last Red Circle before it changed to Lion Books...

#8 is the first Lion and one of four Lions before they changed the imprint back to Red Circle for #12 & 13 ("Carnival of Love", above is the last Red Circle)

With #14, Shirley Jackson's classic horror collection "The Lottery", Goodman changed it back to Lion for the rest of the run. I love my Avons, Pops and Pyramids, but if there's one manageable run I'd try to complete, it would be the Lions. All the great 1st editions of Thompson, Matheson, Bloch etc and great covers by the entirety of Goodmans Mens Adventure Mag artist stable
