I've always had mixed feelings about the 4th of July.  Ignoring the historical fact that the vote for Independence was on the 2nd, a group of merchants and quasi-politicians didn't free us from England. Our independence may have been declared in a back room in Philadelphia, but it was won on the battlefields of  Lexington, Breeds Hill, Saratoga, Princeton, Trenton, Yorktown, and many other places. Without the blood of patriots, the Declaration of Independence would have been just another broadsheet.

We went to a bar after work that day and I was complimented on it unironically at least twice that I remember.  It's become a special treat for my friends when I pull it out every couple of years on the 4th.
