I generally don’t care for sketches because they are just that—sketches. I would rather pay $500-1,500 for a detailed drawing than $150-1000 for a sketch. I also don’t care for the paper which is usually used, as compared to good drawing paper, which produces a better result. So, I wouldn’t pay $250-$500 for a Bruce Timm sketch of Batman, but if I wanted one, would pay $1,500 for a drawing. And as for Walt’s sketches, I would pass.

I suppose terminology comes into it, sketch or drawing ?

What about a Timm Phantom Stranger sketch on a brown paper bag?

That’s a sketch, but a nice sketch. I also loved the character, so I would get that one. I will buy them occasionally.

I can see why you would want them kept intact. From a non-fiscal standpoint that seems the only correct responsible and respectful choice even if it will take longer to to sell. If you take that route kudos

When Walt does a full scale, commission class drawing for charity (about the only place to get one), it will start at $2500 and go up from there.

His con sketches tend to be fast and simple and resell in the low hundreds of dollars these days.

When Walt does con sketches, e.g., at Baltimore, they are free.

Remarqued items (sketches in the his books) tend to be nicer and on rare occasions can be exceptional, but I haven't seen them sell in high 3 figures much less low four figures.

I think your $1000+ is more than most will pay. They are nice sketches, but ...

Here are my con sketches - all were free when done. I bought the Thor one off eBay for $26 in 2005. Prices have gone up, but not 40x.

Here are my remarques. They were done at home as LCS incentives for Vols 1 & 2 of the Ragnarök HCs. Click to enlarge and learn more.

Finally, here are the commissions: Odin is mine, Maleficent is Kathy's. They were part of the 2017 IDW dinner and were greatly under priced.

Here are some commissions that I seem to remember being sold to raise money to help other folks.  None are mine, click image to see it in the CAF.

He's started charging for them now. They were $70 at Terrificon last year. He also did a sketch opportunity a few months ago for full on head/bust sketches for $225 and those have been popping up on CAF lately.

I wonder if he’d do the Phantom Stranger using Thor’s hammer to crack walnuts?

Very informative post, Alex, as always!

the realized prices for Walt’s finished illos at charity auctions continues to amaze me.  Every time I have the opportunity participate  and bid, I get blown out of the water.

the most recent instance was at the 2023 Baltimore Con.  The piece was absolutely stunning and it went for $20K!

Finished illos (pencil and India ink), no backgrounds, sell for $4K and up (I’ve seen as much as $9K for a single figure Thor Illo)

single figure illos rendered in pencil and sharpie (marker) sell for much less than similar images done with India ink.

the quickie head sketches done in sharpie generally sell for $300-$600.

the above realized prices are specifically for Thor.  Prices for Beta Ray Bill, Manhunter, Batman, etc are far lower.

One additional observation:  vintage (pre-1990) Simonson illos seem to command a bit of a premium.  Perhaps they are more difficult to find/desireable by sketch collectors? (shrug)

Great post thanks, Walt did 10 sketches per sketchbook at home when they were released, where do you place them on the Simonson sketchometer ?

to me they sit higher than both the Con sketch and remarques

Me? I'd say a couple of hundred each at the most. Remember, my opinion is worth what you paid for it.
