TOP 5 GRAILS - THAT YOU DON'T OWN
1 1

2) Shock Suspenstories between 6.5 to 8.5 (a poor man's suspense 3)

Which Shock SuspenStories? #6?

yes I meant 6. foreheadslap.gif

Can any body recommend any dealers that specialise in EC comics ?? There's hardly any slabbed if you go by the census.

Are they really rare or mostly mid grade copies therefore no need to slab ??

Once I get my finances in order I'll be after a nice looking 6.0 to 7.5 (raw or slabbed) but I haven't seen any on the market.....

Thanks !!

Realistic grails (in no particular order):

Captain America #46

Phantom Lady #17

Headline #8

Adventure #79

Exciting #28

Can't afford Grails (in solid mid-grade or better):

Suspense #3

Detective #31

Action #2

I suppose if I had millions at my disposal, I might buy copies of the big GA keys just because I could - but they don't appeal to me as much as other stuff - though if I had the money, runs of Captain America, Marvel Mystery, Cat-Man and hero-cover Adventures would be pretty cool!

...for a book to be a grail to me it would need BOTH historicality and readability. So, can you guys give me a list of some books that meet both criteria.

I recently read Batman Archive 2 and happen to think about your query. I think Detective Comics #66-#70 is a great run of comics.

#66 - first Two-Face story

#67 - first Penguin cover and a great story (it's #1 on my GA wantlist)

#68 - another Two-Face story

#69 - good Joker story and a classic cover

#70 - great cover and a neat story

So check out Batman Archive 2, Scrooge. I think you'll like it. thumbsup2.gif

Other notable stories are the first two Penguin stories in #58-#59 and #64 with a great cover and classic story where the Joker goes to the electric chair.

Thanks Norin. I posted this so loooong ago. I will not buy the early Batman in Archives format though but I have the first volume of Chronicles which only reprints 'Tec 27-37 and Batman 1. If they don't continue that series, I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the Archives. It does seem that that stretch 66 to 70 is full of historical importance and if they stand up some 60 later then 893applaud-thumb.gif

Hulk #1 9.4 ped preferable.

JIM #83 9.4 ped

TTA #27 9.4

JIM #112 9.6

SS #4 9.8 ped

The why, Hulk and JIM's fairly obvious. TTA because it is the only crossover from a horror book to Superhero character in Marveldom, and it's a staggering book to get hold of full stop!

The surfer, because it's the surfer quintesential #4.

hello all...

for me, having already had most all of the GA "keys" at one point or another, I personally would like to have:

1)an Allentown Batman (only #1-6 exist, right?, so likely no chance there)

2)an Allentown Detective (as above, only a few, so likely no chance there)

3)a Mile High Batman (certainly Possible, Metro has at least one now)

4)a Mile High Detective (have not seen one for sale in a while)

5) More Fun 52 (only key I never owned)

that's my "list"

hello all...

thanks...have actually been a "reader of the boards" for about 2 years now, I believe, but only started "interacting" recently, as my love for GA Bat's was reignited by a customer of ours, whom has asked me to put together a Bat 1-100 run for him...in doing so, I have re-fallen in love with the old Bats (all of which I had bought and sold over the years), to the point I want to start collecting them again myself (mainly the Early Tec's, but maybe Bat as well...!

I'd have to say if I could own any High Grade block of issues it would be Detective 66-73. I stretched it out to include Tec 71 probably my 2nd favorite Joker cover behind 69, (I need to see Batman 11 in person before making my final decision because Batman 23 was a disappoint once I owned a copy.) And the final issue 73 has the classic first cover of Scarecrow.

Now for my list.

1.Detective Comics 69 VF+ or better

2. Detective Comics 71 VF+ or better

3. All-American Comics 61 A solid VG copy

4. Detective Comics 40 F/VF or better

5. Batman 1 in G to F (I just want it for the first appearance of the Joker)

I once owned the 3 Detectives and I haven't really regretted selling anything, but I definitely regret selling my CGC 8.5 copies of Detective 69 and Detective 71. If I could get the exact same copies I once owned I would be one happy person. I did just purchase very low grade copy of 69 but I have something special in mind for it.
