These are the words from one of our international friends that contacted me directly. "A friend told me that the new Nick from Wilhelm Uthe at ebay is "mitternachtsloewe" Of sure: 99,77 % - He is there only buyer. Other names or Nick's of him in the last time at ebay are: "zuse1943", "ckbi2006", "katze-antik", "aurikabe", "brdrcz" and he pushed with the Nickname "stornkn". I had a deal with W.U. and he send me trash and never has took it back. Whenever he sent me comics, it missed a peace and so on. From these adress he sent me the comics and my lawyer said to me that I should sent back a part of the comics that I don't paid, and I do so. I'm sure that the adress is the right because he signed with his name "Uthe" you can see it on this original scan of the receipt. It's no accident that the signatory is named "Uthe". Then I reported him at the police office because of fraud." About 25 years ago, we came into contact via the mail and I agreed to sell him an absolute killer (white-paged) copy of Batman 23, a mid-grade Comic & Stories 31, and several other books I've now long forgotten about. Anyway, I rec'd several international money orders in the mail so I shipped him the books. By the time the money orders came back from the bank as counterfeit, I was screwed. I learned of several other collectors in Canada and the US that he did the same thing to, and we pooled together so that I could fly to Germany in an attempt to resolve the matter. However, I then got hired in a new job and had to let it go. I did once manage to track him down and actually spoke to his landlady who in broken English told me that Wilhelm had "problems" and that he had moved away. He advertised in CBG sometime in the 90's, but I phoned them immediately and they banned him. I would be very interested to be a part of any action taken against this scum. He was impossible to reach via e-mail. I didn't enjoy the transaction at all. As a completionist I was happy to mark the book off my list, and it didn't cost too much, but on general principle I felt like I'd been bent over. Besides the endless ability to use AKA's and shills, the fear factor ("If I leave a negative for him, then he will leave one for me - oh, never mind") that dominates the site ensures that many of his misdeeds won't get recorded. This is a difficult case for authorities to intervene on - he calls a book a "Fine" when clearly it is a "Fair" or "Good" at best. Try resolving that type of dispute in a court of law. Being overseas from the major market grants him further protection. Plus, he's been doing this for decades so he knows the ropes. Like I said, scum... I think the scams people run on folks in the US are widely distributed around the world so there are countless crooks and Ebay is more than willing to allow it to continue provided you pay your ebay fees. But of course most of the transactions I've had come from there. Why do you think the US has the most lawyers per capita in the world??? My very first buy on ebay many years ago was a scam from a US seller. If I would have labeled all US sellers as scammers or thought it safer just not to buy from the US I would have closed off a big part of the market for no reason. Instead I knew it was just one of a few bad apples in the US (just like we have a few here) and that most people dealing in comics in the US are honest collectors just like me. Additionally Cdn laws are no real different that the US. It's just as easy to sue someone here as the US (although I don't think we've sued any restaurants for dropping a hot pickle from our burger in our lap). Imagine where things would be today if we let one bad incident from a foreign country taint our views of them. Nobody would travel anywhere (particularily Mexico right now), you would not have foreign imports etc etc. Lastly, just for the record most parcels I (or other Cdns) send out take 7-10 business days.
