Comic Stores in London and Paris?

25 posts in this topic

So Jesse and I just booked our honeymoon to London and Paris 2 days ago! yay.gif

Jesse has never been, and I've only been once back in 1994 (It was with my brother. This time will be much better!). We were also going to go to the Portmerion resort in Wales where they filmed the 60's TV show "The Prisoner", since I've always wanted to go there, but that would have been about $2500 more so it isn't gonna happen this time.

Still, we'll have some shopping time in London and Paris and I was wondering if any international members of the boards can recommend some good comic shops on the other side of the pond...especially ones that have British Marvel Comics back issues published by Panini or French Marvel reprints!

We'll be there from July 11th to the 19th...

Gosh Comics on Great Russell Street is a good shop (opposite the British Museum, which you have to visit anyway). Can't recall if they've got any British Marvel back issues, although Comicana (Shaftesbury Avenue, near Gosh, also worth a look) may have some.

As for the Panini (French?) reprints, I haven't seen any for sale in U.K. stores - I'd say that Paris would be a better bet for those...

Send Paris_Fred a PM; he's got a great shop, although I didn't see any of the French reprints. By far, the best comic shop in Paris, and in a great neighborhood, too! thumbsup2.gif

Have fun, I was in Paris for my honeymoon in January. yay.gif

Sorry nearmint, just coincidence...

I don't go to San Diego Comic Con any more. Haven't been since 2002. Just too massive, too may people and too much hassle finding parking and waiting in line. Besides, after Europe I don't think I'll be able to make too many comic purchases anyway.

I posted this before a while ago, but The Panini Marvel's I'm looking for have Dr. Strange in them (Big surprise there, I'm sure) and actually have exclusive UK content not reprinted in America. This one below, for example, was illustrated by a Brit named Simon Williams (not to be confused with Wonder Man Simon Williams in The Avengers):

I'm also looking to complete my run of French Docteur Strange reprints, as well as find any other foreign oddity. Maybe a few pence copies of Strange Tales keys... We'll see!

Paris_Fred is the owner of "Editions Déesse", one of the oldest comics shop of Paris.

Address:

8, rue cochin

75005 PARIS

Web site: http://www.editions-deesse.com/

Most of the comics shops in Paris are in one district (Quartier Saint Germain), here are a few names: Album, Pulp's, Gaël...

The only problem for you poor little american, is that all the prices will appear crazy (due to a strong euro currency, but i'm sure you already know that) to you.

So don't think you're going to find a bargain crazy.gif

When I was in Paris and London, I didn't find Paris_France's shop (it was before the CGC boards), but I did go to Super Heros which was near a museum we visited:

It's about 100 meters from Georges Pompidou museum of modern art.

175, Rue Saint-Martin

75003 Paris

Tél. : 01.42.74.34.74

(From the TCJ board)

If you want discounted stuff try upstairs at Boulinier at 20 Boulevard St Michel

In London, I went to Forbidden Planet which was mostly new stuff, toys, and graphic novels. (I picked up some 2000ADs, etc.)

There's also this place right next to the British Museum:

(As you may have noticed, the tourist thing with the wife was the main focus while I "happened" to look up comic shops around the museums we were going to visit. thumbsup2.gif

Yeah definetly check out Forbidden Planet in Oxford Street. It's our "superstore" here in the UK. Very expensive but great fun for browsing and it's HUGE.

Gosh is 5 minutes away from Forbidden Planet and it's also worth a look. Very different shops in what they carry.

ditto...and they are all in the smae area.

you have album which is the supermarket of comics with it's lack of good costumer service and merchandise everywhere. A lot of backissues and some midly interesting stuff (silver/bronze) at ridiculous prices.

gael that follows closely wizard prices, so if wizard bumps 10$ on a comic, the owner bumps 15$. also a lot of backissues at some stupid prices.

pulps. as a store/environment is the nicest one. owner/employees friendly and helpful.

Fred's Deese. it's the equivalent of aladin's cave...full of wonderful/gorgeous stuff that will make you drool, even some nice OA on the walls and a lot of dust, like on a cave, 27_laughing.gifcloud9.gifcloud9.gifcloud9.gif

so if you're allergic to dust, beware, enter at your own risk!!! grin.gif

It ain't cheap but you pay for the quality stuff... wink.gif

Top notch costumer service...the best you'll get in paris. And if you like to talk about nice silver age stuff be sure to go with plenty of time...you risk on losing your flight!!! grin.gif

anyway, have fun

regards

The best comic store in London for sheer variety of interesting stock is "30th Century Comics" - but it's a bit off the beaten tracks. There's a web-site here

All the Central London ones are largely along the same theme - you can do the walk in 15 minutes starting at Gosh (pretentious high-brow), down to Comicana (stuffed but dingy), down to FP (disinterested and corporate) and finally to Comic Showcase (squalid and drafty)... then finish with a slap-up tea at Piccadilly and an evening at the Hard Rock Casino... hey, there's no better way to spend a Saturday... tongue.gif

Nope. They're just nicer than the impression Ewan has given, that's all - although FP is corporate...

I would agree with that although i have been to a few stores in the States and i wasn't that impressed. I guess it's just comic stores in general. They all suck, with the exception of a few. Still, i don't know where Ewan got the idea 30th Century is the best in London! 27_laughing.gif
