Score! My LCS owner just bought a large ASM low--grade collection and held 'em for me to look through. Tons of goodies. Anyhow, I walked away today with a copy of ASM 5 in probably 1.0-1.5 for only $15!!! Maybe it's just me, but that's a bang up deal. I also snagged #21 in 4.0 for $10. The real coup de tat (however you spell it smile.gif ) will be the copy of ASM 14 in around 2.0-2.5 for only $50! I'm pretty happy about this to say the least. There are also some other books I'm picking up really, really cheap (i.e. #11 in 2.0 for $25, #101 in 5.0 for $20, & Avengers #4 2.0 for $25).

Needless to say, what a great day for stopping by the comic store!

Coup d'état.

Yes, excellent pick ups. I bought an ASM 5, with the upper half of the cover missing for $12 several years back.

Well, my spelling was right-- just needed the appropriate punctuation. But yeah... the cover is complete and attached (though barely). Lots of creases and chipping on the edge, but the cover art is preserved, and the entire insides are intact (which is why I'm leaning towards grading it at a 1.5). And this is now officially my oldest comic book! grin.gif

I am basically a 100% Silver Age Marvel collector with some extension into the Bronze Age for ASM which is my prime obsession! ASM...FF...JIM/THOR in that order. Also a big fan of Pre-Super Hero Atlas/EC Sci-Fi/Horror/Crime/and similar...but the only thing I own currently is TOS 1-38 all raw average grade about 5.5-6.0...

I read probably as much DC as a kid as Marvel but once FF and Spidey hit the scene I was hooked and DC titles became my *spoon* step-children (as far as collecting went)...Kept various collections going but my mom was very strict (and a convert to Catholicism) and thought that between comics and Sat morning cartoons I was pretty much rotting away my mind and on the way to becoming a serious juvenile delinquent (which of course I pretty much was)...and so on at least a couple occasions my mom said I had to give away or throw away my entire collection...each time I went down to the local comic shop and bought up a bunch of 3-centers (Silver Age commons were going re-sale for 8-cents at the time) and tore some in half and dumped about 50-100 in the trash can and when my mom got home from work showed her that I had tossed them (fortunately her strictness was matched by her gullibleness!)...but my parents were divorced and she was raising me and my 3 brothers single-handedly (maybe she was a saint afterall) and I had to hide the books in the attic or wherever (didn't trust any of my friends) and then when we'd move I'd have to smuggle the books over...it was all very, well, like a comic book story in itself...

Back to the ASM...I amassed a collection of 1-50 by the time I was a sophomore in high school (1971) and then sold it to this dude who had been bugging me for a long time for $65-bucks! Still can't quite remember why I was compelled to sell those but it must have seemed like a lot of dough at the time. (Sold two shoeboxes of baseball cards as well including all the keys...Mantle/Mays/Hank Aaron rookie card/etc. etc for $25-bucks as well but that's another story...).

Anyway, I began to regret that almost immediately and started re-collecting and pretty much decided that I would hang on to my books from there on. Problem was that there was only one comic shop in town and I certainly didn't have any money and occasionally me and my friend would make forays up to Hollywood where they had some pretty good shops but we wouldn't even consider paying $20 for a book back then...once we filled a hole with a copy that was in pretty decent shape we moved on...again, probably most of us in the same boat pre-internet...

I stopped purchasing comics at newsstand approx 1973 (so about issues 121/122) and after I got out of high school (I moved out when I was 18/summer of 73) then put everything in mylar bags/boxes (about 800 books) and basically ignored them until about 15 years ago when I upgraded all the bags/boards and boxes and started thinking about keeping them in better storage etc.

Didn't join eBay until Feb 2002 but started buying/selling with the notion of upgrading my entire collection and perhaps culling it down to my favorites...pretty much bought/sold raw books for the first couple of years with my share of "deals" and my share of disappointments...I really resisted the CGC thing...hated it really, but I came to appreciate it and realize that with buying/selling books via internet and not having the opportunity to peruse the actual book in hand that it made a lot of sense and was a generally positive thing...

So it's funny how thoughts and goals change...in 02 I was set on upgrading my Silver Age and my Spidey to 6.0 or better raw and then eventually changed my focus to ASM 1-200 in CGC 9.0 or better which led to seeking pretty much 9.4 in issues 51-200. Have since sold off recently ASM 130-200 CGC 9.4 through Doug/Pedigree and my current ASM collection sits as follows:

AF 15 restored in 8.5/9.0 range

1 in CGC 7.0

14 in CGC 7.0(A)

19, 24, 25, 27 in CGC 9.0

30-40 in CGC 9.0 except need 32 and 33/38 is 9.2 and 34 is 9.4(A)

42-49 in CGC 9.0 except 45 is 9.4 and 46 is 9.2

51-129 in CGC 9.0 or better except issue 54 (which I sold to Evil-Sly a 9.0 as I had an agreement to get a 9.4 but the seller made a mistake and sold it to someone else)...3 in 9.6 and 56 of them in 9.4...

Sorry no scans...I have no idea how to do the cut and paste or scan thing or anything so if anyone can guide me I'd be very much appreciative...I have scans of everything and am really quite proud of my collection so if you sent me your email in a PM I'd be happy to email you a zip.file of my entire collection which is really, I think, quite impressive...

STILL HAVE 17 BRONZE AGE ASM ISSUES BETWEEN 130-198 IN CGC 9.4 (THE 198 IS 9.8) THAT DIDN'T SELL ON PEDIGREE FOR SALE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED! PM ME...

Finally figured out how to post some scans...see below my ASM 19, 27, 30, 31, 34, 39, 43 & 66...

I meant to add I have all the issues not mentioned raw and a few of them are restored and/or qualified and I will be ultimately selling these off and changing them out with CGC copies...

ALSO, I AM VERY INTERESTED IN CGC 9.0 OR BETTER RESTORED FOR ISSUES 1-20...

Hey, that's a great collection you've got there! I hope you picked up the ASM Omnibus though so you can still read them and enjoy the art inside?

Now that I've completed my run of ASM 30-50, I've started reading through them again and am really enjoying both the writing and art.

Thanks...

I don't have the Omnibus, which I plan on checking out...but I do have Marvel Masterworks first 4 paperback editions which covers the complete DITKO run AF15/ASM1-40. I use these to read the issues to my son who is 9 and seems to be digging the stories...i.e., seem to pass muster versus his current notion of interests...we just finished reading FF 48/49/50 Silver Surfer/Watcher/Galactus trilogy (after seeing the movie) which was awesome to go back and read!
