Bit of exciting news:

Paradise Conventions is proud to announce our first two confirmed guests for June 8-10, 2007

Michael Golden

Artist/writer/creator Michael Golden has a legion of fan followers that have been clamoring for him to attend conventions. He usually gruffly declines, preferring to stay in his studio and draw. He has an even greater number of artist's in the industry who cite him as an influence. The "artists artist" as it were. Finally in response to requests from both corners, Golden has agreed to make a few choice convention stops, and Toronto had to be one on the short list.

Know for his detailed pencil work on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts," "G.I. Joe Yearbook," and "Dr. Strange #55, " among many more, Golden, modestly never says which is his own personal favorite. However, according to one art dealer, "Everybody in the business has ripped off something from "Dr. Strange #55." Michael himself admits that most artists that talk to him and say that he had an influence on their career, do single out that issue as well.

Other noteable milestones in Golden's career include the creation of "Bucky O'Hare" with Larry Hama, which led to an animated series and toy line designed by Michael. Vanguard Productions is currently planning a Manga version of the series to be released later this year. He is also the designer of the "Stick it to 'em' series from Eva Ink Toys.

As a cover artist, Golden has penciled everything from Batman and Captain America to Vampirella-- and "Virtually every character in the industry at some point or another. I'm the one they came to when they wanted one of those covers with a thousand characters on them," he laughs. (He still wants to draw Kirby's 4th World characters, though if ever given the chance.)

Currently finishing the “Spartan” series for Image comics, which he is also writing, and the presonal "Tunuki" project, Golden is becoming as well known for his writing as he is his artwork, with creations that stay as fresh and groundbreaking as ever.

Renee Witterstaetter

Writer, editor and publisher Renee Witterstaetter began the comic phase of her career working on such titles as Superman at DC Comics and Silver Surfer, Conan The Barbarian and Conan Saga at Marvel, then going on to spearhead the reintroduction of She-Hulk at Marvel as well. She then moved over to Topps Comics where she was the editor on X-Files, Jurassic Park, Xena and Hercules and the co-creator—with Jackie Chan and artist Michael Golden-- of Jackie Chan’s Spartan X… one of the inspirations for the animated series. During this time, Renee was also the colorist on hundreds of comics from the Avengers to Spiderman to Captain America among many, many more.

Film work was a natural progression for Renee after this storytelling immersion in comics, and after a fluke chance meeting with Buster Keaton’s widow in LA, and a run in with a tiger while on crutches—long story—she naturally stayed in Hollywood for a time and began her career working in film. Just seemed like the thing to do. She has since worked on dozens of music videos for Madonna, Seal and Usher, as well as the feature movies Police Story III, Drunken Master II, Crime Story, Rush Hour Two, Red Dragon , To ease the lose, and Swimming With The Virgin, among others.

She is the author of numerous books, boxing articles and feature articles including “Dying for Action: The Life and Films of Jackie Chan,”from Warner Books, and has contributed to “The Fantastic Art of Arthur Suydam” from Vanguard Productions and “The Art of the Barbarian—Conan, Tarzan and Death Dealer, Volume One and Volume Two” from Image.

In addition to on-going film work, she is the President of Little Eva Ink Publishing and Little Eva Ink Toys, responsible for the irreverent “Stick it to ‘em” series amongst others as well as the upcoming Cholly and Flytrap and Spartan X statuettes. In-between fishing and salsa dancing, she sometimes signs at comic book conventions. www.evainkpublishing.com

It does. He told the group of us at the Beguiling signing on Saturday that he's got about five issues completed of the new Spirit series (which launches in January), so it should be completely on schedule as a monthly.

2007 Women of Comics II GUESTS: TANIA DEL RIO, GAIL SIMONE & MORE

9/6/2006

Returning to the Paradise Comicon from it's successful debut in 2006, the Women of Comics II Symposium at the 2007 Paradise Comicon will pick up from, and continue with, the themes explored in 2006 and will continue to spotlight the work of some of the top female professionals in the business - including Tania Del Rio (writer & artist, Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Gail Simone (writer, Birds of Prey and the All-New Atom), Patricia Mulvihill (colorist, 100 Bullets) and Heidi MacDonald (intrepid comics reporter, The Beat).

Tania Del Rio

Tania del Rio, has always loved comics and she's thrilled to be working on one of her favorite titles- Sabrina The Teenage Witch! Although she received an animation degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, comics have always been a part of her life. She would go to comic conventions where she would sell her own self-published comics and, more recently, her comic, Lovesketch, was one of ten finalists to appear in Tokyopop's anthology, Rising Stars of Manga Volume 2!

In Japan, where manga is sold, there are many wonderful female artists, and they have inspired Tania's love of the manga style! Tania's biggest hope is that more girls in North America will get interested in comics and grow up to make comics, too! So, if you enjoy Sabrina The Teenage Witch, show it to all your friends and let them see how much fun comics can be.

Gail Simone

Gail Simone is the current writer of DC's Birds of Prey and All-New Atom series, as well as the upcoming Gen13 revival for DC/WildStorm. Simone is also the writer of DC's 2005 Villains United limited series (part of the lead-in tow Infinite Crisis), and its spin-off, the limited series Secret Six.

Other work by Simone includes a run on the Superman title Action Comics, a brief stint on The Legion, and a Rose and Thorn limited series at DC Comics. For Oni Press, Simone wrote Killer Princesses with co-creator and artist Lea Hernandez, and the Gus Beezer specials for Marvel Comics.

Patricia Mulvihill

A colourist for DC, Mulvihill won an Eisner Award for her work on Vertigo’s cult hit ‘100 Bullets’, written by Brian Azzarello. She is currently working on 100 Bullets and Loveless, a western also penned by Azzarello and confesses to still be starstruck when meeting other artists for the first time.

Heidi MacDonald

Heidi MacDonald is a former DC Comics editor. She has written numerous articles about the comics industry and currently writes "The Beat”, an online column and a print column entitled "Hey Kids Comics", which can be found monthly in The Comic Buyer's Guide.

The Women of Comics II Symposium is sponsored by www.allnewcomics.com

The last time he was in Toronto, it wasn't a great appearance. In my opinion, he made it clear he didn't want to be there with his brusque attitude (though that goes hand in hand with he that is BWS) and the fact he spent the vast majority of his short appearance time talking with... a rather voluptuous young woman; a booth model.

Have fun in Baltimore, Kev.

I remember when BWS was at the Expo, a few years back (2000?2001?) and I did notice he wasn't too happy to be there. I ended up sitting beside him at lunch on one of the days at a restaurant on Front St. Still, he's one of the greats.

Yes we are planning to do a show this fall, but we're waiting to hear about availability of the Hilton on the weekends we are in town to do one. Given the nature of the booking process at that location we can't reserve any sooner than 6-8 weeks ahead of time.

Just added:

Darick Robertson

Robertson is perhaps most renowned as the artist and co-creator of Transmetropolitan. His entry into comics began with Space Beaver, a cult classic written and illustrated shortly after graduating high school and published by Ten-Buck Comics. Other titles featuring his art can be seen in the comic books New Warriors, The Punisher origin limited series Born, Fury MAX, as well as assorted issues of Justice League, The New Warriors, Spider-Man, and on a number of Malibu Comics titles.

In 2001, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics and relaunched Wolverine with writer Greg Rucka at the #1 spot in May of 2002. After 19 issues of Wolverine, and with Rucka's departure to DC Comics, he was taken off the comic and given a position as the penciller on Nightcrawler, eventually contributing cover artwork as well. The Nightcrawler series ended in November of 2005 with issue 12. Robertson then went on to do a limited series with previous collaborator Garth Ennis entitled Fury: Peacemaker. In March 2006, he announced he was leaving Marvel to create his own comic with Ennis called The Boys, which is now being published under the Wildstorm DC Comics branding.

Christine Norrie

Christine Norrie is the artist on Jan Van Meter's Hopeless Savages, a cute comedy in the vein of Chynna Clugston-Major's Blue Monday. Prior to working with the Savages, Norrie had done work on Action Girl and a few pin ups here and there. She was surprised about how the opportunity came to draw Hopeless Savages, but after seeing her artwork it's no surprise that she caught the eye of the folks at Oni Press.
