Heritage Auction Baltimore....1st session..Friday Sept 8

With the New Adventure #26 going for $5400, I'm officially shut out of this auction. I went to $5100 on it and stopped. I know not many copies exist, but it was just too schmutzy to go crazy on.

I went to $31,000 on the All-Story but knew that wasn't going to take it. I'm curious to see where it closes.

Well I lost out on all my Mile High bids, but at least I got the book I really wanted from this auction. My favorite Rangers Comics cover and my first Gerber 8.

At a $5400 price for a VG/FN, I'd rather have the DTA copy at his original asking price.

Congradulations !

SUPERMAN # 1 crippin went for 35.8 k. I thought it would get a little more. [blue label 3.0

I was thinking of getting it for a cheap $28 including BP since no one was bidding with 2days to go...i checked yesterday and its 30k w/out BP so i guess someone from the floor bidded on too

news.gif Talk of the Con today was last night's auction. Word was that Geppi was bidding by phone as aggressively as necessary to acquire as many of the Church books as possible.

Also, word was that a second phone bidder dueled with Geppi on many of the books - Mr. Fischler, perhaps?

The Marvel Mystery Annual Varient realized $28, 600 from the Mclaughlin collection. 893whatthe.gif

I am sure glad I still own my apparent VF restored copy of the same Variant Annual that I only paid $5K for. See Attached pic

Nice looking book. Who did the restoration? Be interesting to see if any of these books show up on Metropolis anytime soon and what prices will be.

Thanks to Bill Ponseti for letting me know about this board. Talk about late to the party...sheesh!

Well, now that I'm finally here, I just wanted to say hi to everyone and check out some of the recent posts. As usual, I am always interested in buying Gold and Silver Age books, so drop me a line anytime.

re: Batimore Heritage...what really blew me away was how much that Marvel Mystery annual went for.....something like $25k??!?!?!?! Good LORD. And to think I used to own one of those 10 years ago.....arghhhhhh! (although mine probably wasn't the "variant".

Oh...someone mentioned my Detective 10? Drop me a line....

The word overvalued is often overused in our society, but in the case of the Cap America and MM annual, it fits. These are Candian reprints sold only in Canada.

I see the ALL STORY[1st app tarzan] went for 60k. Not mind boggling ,but I cant help wondering? Is that a record for a pulp ?

I saw that. Probably a top price, but then again, when was the last time you saw one for sale? Anybody know how many better copies there are? Did McGalughlin have the best copy? Or is there one known copy that's cut perfectly, not raggedy like so many early pulps and really looks NM or NM-?? How many copes exist anyway?

Hi Phil. Glad to see you finally made it to the party. Doug Sulipa offered me the variant Marvel Mystery Annual AND a Captain America Annual each in VG for 14k about 5-6 years ago. I passed and bought his Marvel Mystery Comics 2-5 instead. Guess I chose wrong.

This auction seemed to have an awful lot of ego flying around. I knew this would happen when I first heard about the collection. As a rule I avoid these auctions, because what I call "new collection fever" strikes and people basically lose their minds. Of course some books went for what I consider to be reasonable prices. The Detective 27 and the Superman 1 come to mind. No disrespect, but I would take either over the All Story or the MM Annual any day of the week.

I don't know?? Overvalued is a relative term. Overvalued compared to what? I guess my definition would be, will the next sale for the book be at a higher or lower level?

The problem shorting stocks with a very small float is that they can easily be "controlled". It takes relatively small syndicates to hold the price together. Then the old adage applies, "Will the stock remain overvalued longer than you can remain solvent"?

Your exoerience is far greater than mine so I bow to your knowledge. I guess, in the past, you've seen a few books become "hot" with a few indivuals chasing whatever supply exists? If a couple decide to sell then I guess the old punchline is remembered? "SEll? To whom?

Overvalued compared to actual early Timleys that are not reprints.

Tell that to the completeists. As you know It's the game as much as anything else. An article in a trade might have sparked a run? In the meantime I'm thinking I should scour Banff for a copy.
