I fear you may be correct. How can I know for sure?

Yeah.. after looking at it... that certainly appears to be color touch as flaking wouldn't cause a lighter shade of black. Bleed thru to the inside of the cover is a sure fire eye balling way to cinch it or running your finger over it to discover slight differences in the texture of the paper. Otherwise, black light if you have one handy.
