Back from NYCC with a few sketches

21 posts in this topic

Sketches? Me? I never bothered to collect any before this NYCC, but a serendipitous turn of events led to the first one, and I decided to start an ongoing series, just to make cons a little more fun for me, and to get a small memento of my brief time with the artists I admire.

The first three are Brian Bolland, Ethan Van Sciver, and Tony Harris. See the pics and read the long version of this story if interested here:

It was great getting to hang out with my nemesis/buddy Brett, and getting to meet such fine folks as Joseph and Sean. Hope everyone else who attended had a great time as well!!

Congrats on joining us on the slippery slope of getting con sketches. Before you know it you'll be lining up at 4 in the morning to get on "that" list.

And congrats on getting Tony to do a Great Machine sketch. He must like you. What, do you give him a lot of money or something? grin.gif

What was the original art like at the show? anything interesting?

Bechara had some nice stuff, but of course, it's Bechara.....Albert and All Star were right next to each other and they both had stuff that was new, but there wasn't any MUST HAVES.....In fact, the two days I was there, all I walked out with was 35 dollars in half priced trades.....

Noice! I've seen these little sketches in person and they're great (especially the Harris and Bolland).

As to the show in general, it was fun hanging out, but I agree with comicartfan - none of the dealers had anything new worth talking about. I did manage to spend two weeks' salary in artist alley though smile.gif

Oh, I wouldn't say that the dealers had nothing worth talking about! Bechara and Conrad certainly had some nice Silver and Bronze Age examples, and Albert had some nice new things in the portfolios. Heritage showcased a few items from tehir upcoming Signature Auction in May, and All Star had some nice Silver Age stuff, including several significant DC splashes.

And, of course, there were plenty of other collectors walking around with items for possible trade/sale. I had a blast, especially being able to see several friends from all over.

I agree Hari, there was decent stuff for those that were looking. I managed to get myself a nice Frazetta piece:

as well as a great Zatanna figure by Bolland

I don't usually come to this forum but I figured tonight would be a good time to come and check out what everyone else at the show got. I didn't expect to see people talking negatively about the show. This show is as good as it's going to get for NYC. Beats the hell out of the Carbonaro Big Apple show.

Hey Ruben,

Great to see you on the CGC boards. Stick around!

This convention should be even better next year, especially since they're apparently moving to April when there's better weather and no longer so close to Wonder Con in timing.

Ruben,

I love the Toth model sheets in your collection. For me, that kind of work is as exciting as it gets. He obviously put a lot of energy into creating those.

I recently linked to your Mac Raboy Flash Gordon (with Odin) as an example of why I love Mac Raboy so much. His inking in that strip is simply lights-out unbelievable.

That new Johnny Comet Sunday strip is just mesmerizing. Frazetta's inking is simply awesome. What a perfectly executed strip. Is there some 1950's explanation for "blow" that I'm not aware of?

Thanks. For a long time I thought I was the only one that liked these. I was able to squirrel away a few before people got wise. I'm still one of the few actively searching but they aren't exactly easy to find.

That was my first Raboy and my favorite. It's not Odin but a viking yelling Odin as his war cry. The detail is incredible in person.

Dave Winowicz (Frazetta collector and biographer) said that meant to treat them to a soda. So "Jean, can I blow you and Mr. Roe" means "Jean, can I buy one for you and Mr. Roe". I took his word for it but it didn't make sense to me either.

The show was hard to navigate and many commission list filled before the show even opened to the public. Dell Otto's list was full before noon. mark brooks was full by the open of the show. I did manage to get a nice painting from Nelson Decastro for a nice price I also got many sketch card for my sketch card collection project.

solar,

If u had the time and patience to get behind the dealer's booth, u would have seen that Bechara Maalouf was displaying a complete story of Gene Colan/Frank Giacoia Tales of Suspense twice up comic art for an asking price of around $37,000.00. The bristol board was in superb white condition but out of my price league. gossip.gif

Hey Jon

I'm back and playing catch up with work and post. It was good meeting up with you, albeit briefly. It was pretty funny being able to ring Brett's number using the sketch list only to find you both standing 18 inches away from me.

Didn't realise you didn't collect sketches, you're off to a great start tho I don't know that I should be encouraging competition ;o)

Most of my scores are in my book but I put up a couple of the loose ones here

It was good meeting you as well, Joseph! I'll have to remember that little cellphone trick for future reference.

I don't think my sketch collection will be growing very quickly as I don't do many cons, but it will make the ones I do attend a little more engaging.

Thanks to all for the kind words!
