You are actually an original owner that can attest to the stamps. I think I have assumed too much that most stamps were placed by the original owner, but as you point out even non-date star stamps were on books by the store/distributor. My neighborhood newsroom in Newark seemed to mark most of his books with an "N" and others with an "E". Now that you mention it I'll have to look through my collection for some other marks other than dates. Here's a good example of an "N" copy.
