Wonderful early FH material! :applause:

This was something like 25 years ago, but I remember a buddy of mine (who owned a local bookstore) driving out with me to see a comic collecting friend of his who had gotten out of prison for killing his wife. On the way in the car my buddy told me "Ray" had a complete FH collection. Yeah, verily...

Well, we got there and he did :o . "Ray" needed some funds, and asked what I wanted. I just went for the Jumbo 10-30 as it was all I could afford at the time - I passed on the Jumbo 9 due to it's 'odd' size. :(

Talk about a Homer Simpson moment (doh!)...

The artwork looks very familiar to me, too.

Reminds me of the work in DC comics in the 50's. (shrug)

You know what I do when I don't know like in this case: I always say John Prentice.

Here's a Prentice page from the Who's Who. Compare the guy at bottom right to the main figure in the splash hm(shrug):pullhair:

Thanks Scrooge. Similar noses. If it's not Prentice, both artists probably had the same reference material. Look magazine or some such.

Speaking of artists, how 'bout that Joe Kubert?

...and here's an old photo showing a few other pieces.

This is my favorite pic of all of BZ's treasures. A small nose Snoopy Peanuts just casually tossed in there. Nothing major. Yikes.

Isn't that a Jack Davis story from Tales of Suspense? :o

I just found out I'm getting a nice tax return so if anyone wants to sell me any other hard-to-find Jumbos, now's the time!

How did you decide on keeping that particular story vs. other pre-hero stories?

Yeah, it's from TOS 38.

I own the entire 11 page story.

You.... wha.... really? Wow.

Herriman, Schulz, Foster, Capp, Davis... Is that Raymond and Gould?

That's just amazing BZ.

Kubert did extensive work for St. John in a variety of genres.

It was the only Davis comic book work I'd ever seen on the market (this was before Gaines released the EC pages) so I refused to sell it cheap.

In retrospect I wish I'd kept everything, but I had bills to pay. (shrug)

Makes sense. He really didn't do much comic book work for anyone other than Gaines. While there might still be some of his Atlas Western original art still in existence, I don't think he did too much.

Should I try to scan the Sheena origin page from Jumbo 2? I think Kirby did a lot of work in those early issues too.

I'd love to see the Sheena page. :luhv:

Please post it!!

OK, I guess I could try it the lazy way. Page from the Sheena story in Jumbo 2.

Another Sheena page but this time from Jumbo 4 I think. Maybe #5. Heck I don't remember. I will look it up again tomorrow. Meskin didn't sign these and they have a touch of Powell I think.

Evocative story on so many different levels.

Do you know whatever became of Ray's collection?
