Sudoku can be done with any sort of characters, as long as the rules apply. No repeating of characters in the rows/columns.

And how do you come up with an equal total number for rows/colums/cubes?

Being 45 in the numerical Sudoku if you've got 9 rows/colums?

You don't, but then that's not one of the criteria of a sudoku. That's just a byproduct of adding 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9, because you can't repeat then numbers in a row/column.

I presume you'll have to scan the entire puzzle to assemble the 9 letter set, and take it from there the same as you would the numerals 1 - 9.

Actually the wife and I will compete against each other in solving them. We can usually finish one in 10-15 minutes. The comic ones are a cool idea.

Thanks alot... It took me an hour to figure out one of the easiest ones. You're right though, it does remind me of minesweeper. I can see where this will be just as addicting as Sudoku.
