Actually, I think you are underemphazing the dramatic changes. Small details matter. There's a big different between Walmart, Target, and Filenes. One of the biggest is the "feel" you get just by walking in the door.

This grey is a big deal. Posting the ads in the middle is a big deal. Not communicating is a big deal and then condescendingly telling all the complainers to Chill out, no big deal man, is also a big deal.

Why not try this on for size

1. A very cool multi-person PM system: "Hey guys we added a mulitperson PM system, what do y'all think." Wait 3 days respond to feedback roll it out again as improved.

2. Multiple images I haven't check out this feature but I'm sure its cool. See 1 above

3. hardware upgrade: Do this anyway.

4 & 5. Moods & icons : Yipee good job.

6. Calander: Haven't used it yet and probably won't but thank you for adding it.

7. An improved poll interface. OK, but did polls really make this place what it is. Again, see 1 above.

8. Frankly, an improved layout and style sheet despite some needed tweaks, that has gotten rid of alot of distracting and over-emphasized lines all over the screen.

OK, here's where you lost me. The screen we see is the store. By making changes you have forced me to go to a new and different store. Imagine if Target changed their logo to a dark blue target box instead of red target circle, and had reduced lighting and grey purple walls. Ads for products were placed in the aisle. All the employees wore grey instead of red. Would you still shop there? Even if you would, can you say it would be the same experience? Now what if the store manager answered all his criticism with "get over it, its not that big a deal. Plus we added more registers you should thank me."

And thank you for telling me what my priorities should be. Maybe you should rethink yours. (See how it feels when I say it to you?)

A little humility goes a long way.

Ed

Acutally, my opinion is that that's a hysterical mob-think reaction of silly proportions, and that 95% of all of the navigation of this new version is just about the same, with a variety of improvements.

1. A very cool multi-person PM system

2. The ability to attach multiple images and have them appear in-line instantly without having to re-link the images

3. A noticeable hardware upgrade that's sped the boards up

4. Some nifty new things like moods

5. A wider selection of post icons

6. An improved calendar interface

7. An improved poll interface.

8. Frankly, an improved layout and style sheet despite some needed tweaks, that has gotten rid of alot of distracting and over-emphasized lines all over the screen.

8. Misc. others

In the meantime, the complaints (all very easy tweaks) seem to be mostly:

1. There's too much grey.

2. We want more contrasting colors so new posts leap out at us.

3. A (very annoying) IE6.0 bug for those using that browser.

4. The graemlins are missing.

5. I don't like to see ads that help to support the costs and maintenance of a resource that I spend loads of time on and really like. You moved them and now I'm angry.

6. We need to get the "replied to" text back.

While I'm all in favor of making adjustments to the boards so that everyone here has a good experience, the sheer drama of the complaints is a bit much. "I'm blind!" "THIS SUUUCCCCKKKSSS!!!!!!" "I have a massive headache, I need a vacation from the boards!!" etc. etc. I mean... wow.

In summary, the evil effects of this "massive upheaval" are exaggerated. I understand that we're all creatures of habit, but c'mon. If anyone has a nervous breakdown over that short and fairly trivial list of issues, they might want to re-think their priorities.

A pleasant day to you Arch. Hope everything is going well.

Could you please look into the following.

1) Restoring the quote functions to the way they used to be. Thanks.

2) Could you please move the secondary advertisement to a location other than interupting the flow of the thread. Ads are wonderful and a boon to mankind but the location of the additional ad seems a bit out of place. Thanks so much.

3) could you remove this content.gif from the log in area. Appreciate it.

On the bright side (which you prefer, and dwell in) The Pm functions will be a great improvent.

This is a great idea in principle on your part.

1. Nope, but we'll widen them.

2. Those are staying the same. Sorry guys. Something has to pay for the new server the new board software, the new operating system and database software upgrade, etc.

3. No way! That's a cool new feature!

Try dwelling on the bright side, or really just right in the middle of it all without artificial polarization. ;) It's nice. :news:

Not 100% sure, but I think it is the little piece of paper looking thing beside the "Re: (Whatever)" at the top left of the page. I may be wrong though... it has been known to happen!

So I asked nicely and was shot down all three times. I'm not surprised.

And you want me to look at a bright side.

you very specifically and purposefully left off the evil side-scrolling nested quote thing from the list of problems. the implication is that you don't intend to fix it. for that you should be strung up by your nethers and forced to listen to the theme song for "Who's the Boss?" until your frontal lobe either dissolves or explodes

:kidaround:

Mea culpa! It's on the list, I swear! No "Who's the Boss!?"!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!

Let me go on record saying I love the new boxed quote function. Saves me from having to look at page after page of stuff I've already read or endless Greggy/MK gremlins. Unless I want to. In which case I should be shot.

Are you guys having trouble selling ad space or something? Did the buyer say, "Put my ad in the center of the thread, or I'm walkin'."

Arch, can you add back the "jump to new posts in thread" function as well? Or is it here and I'm just not seeing it. Thanks.....

IT's here, you do jump down to them. What's missing is that they should be colored differently and they're not. Sometimes you end up furhter back in a thread than the new posts, but that's because when people post large images in a thread they often load AFTER the browser has jumped to the newest post, and that pushes the new posts down and off your screen.

But that's always been true.

3. I can live with this change, as atleast it allows me to show just how happy I am right now.

Dunno if this has been asked/mentioned but with 13 threads about the new look, who can keep up :(

Anyway, what I really miss is the delivery notification for PMs sent...

In the past this was a very effective way to find out if somebody that owed you money/books/CCEs was really not able to log on or was just stalling...

Arch,

Can you set the time we are allowed to edit a post to the max? Right now it's a pretty short window. It's not a big deal now, but it will be when we do the next Virtual Comic Con.

Thanks.

I think we're all losing a little perspective here. Its kind of like complaining that your welfare check is a day late. Last time I checked, this site was free and the benefits we all derive from it (monetary-for those of us who buy and sell, knowledge, community, etc) don't suddenly disappear because the damn thing isn't as easy to navigate or read as we're used to.

Another issue I've noticed.

I'm not getting emails telling me I got a PM like I used to.

The option was turned off in my profile. I turned it on and I get e-mails now.

Very good point!

I love knowing when I am "ignored". Helps me to narrow down the list of people I want nothing to do with!
