Amazing Spider-Man Collecting Thread!
Yale Stewart replied to Point Five's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
It's awfully late, but wanted to post my mail from today. The way prices have been trending, I was incredibly worried that I'd never be able to afford to replace the copy of #1 that I sold back in 2011. This one cost significantly more than that one, but I managed to swing it. Tape on cover, but most importantly, the cover is attached and the book is complete. 7 more books to complete 1-441. -

This week's pick up. The first Ditko issue I ever bought, but foolishly sold about a decade ago. Glad to have a copy back in my collection. 9 more to go. -

My pick up of the week. The first Ditko issue I ever bought, but foolishly sold about ten years ago. Glad to have a copy back in my collection. Just wish it didn't cost so much -
I think like all things it hinges on the conservation the book has undergone. I've seen an ASM #1 where the only note was that the cover had been cleaned. To me, that's an "IDGAF" note that should be prob 80-90% of a blue label. I've seen other stuff that really makes me wonder exactly how they define conserved vs. restored because the notes feel SIGNIFICANTLY more involved, and would have me consider a price 50-60% of blue label. It's really tricky.

Right, but whether the spine is split past the staple or the cover has just been pulled off of the staple, the cover is still detached at that staple. It's just that you can have a split spine with the cover still attached at both covers.

Cartoonist Kayfabe touches on a decent amount of manga. Heck, I'd argue their claim to fame was the series of videos they did on Akira, and Otomo's works that preceded it. But if you're talking specifically from some kind of collecting/value rather than a criticism/review standpoint, there's just nothing to talk about, or the audience is so small it's not really worth it. I probably own more manga than (collected) Western comics, but I don't really care about rare or valuable titles. I buy what I've heard is good, and if something's OOP and pricey, I cross that bridge when I come to it.

@Jennifer F. Interesting. I've seen grader's notes that list when a cover is detached from a single staple, though.

@Jennifer F. Thank you so much for the response! That's very helpful. I did have one further question, but let me provide it as an example, because I'm not sure how to simply ask it: Let's say you have a comic, and it has a spine split from the bottom of the spine to a length ABOVE the bottom staple, thus detaching the cover from that staple. Would the cover detachment also be noted, or simply the spine split? I hope that makes sense. These are the grader's notes on the book I'm referring to (#1294483001), if that helps any: medium chip out right top of back cover medium split bottom of spine moderate creasing to cover moderate wear spine multiple writing back cover small, multiple tear back cover

It seemed like the mid-grade early ASM books were going lower than I've been seeing. Not by a ton, but by at least a few hundred. A 5.0 #6 sold for $1350 including BP. I feel like I see people generally asking closer to $2K for that book in that grade lately. -

Anyone tune in to the Heritage auction tonight? I might be wrong, but it looked like prices might be cooling down a little bit. I'm not super well-versed in price trends, though, so maybe I'm wrong. I'm wondering if someone who pays closer attention to things like that would be able to toss in their two cents. -

That might be a tough one, as I believe Marvel pivoted to coated paper for a while in the '90s then BACK to newsprint once the bubble burst. However, I think the truly last newsprint issue was early in the JMS/JRJR run. I only really know because I was recently flipping through some of the issues in maybe the 30s and was surprised to realize they were printed on uncoated paper. -
Hello! I was looking through grader's notes on a book and one note listed was "medium spine split." I was wondering what constitutes a "medium" spine split. I'd also be curious what qualifies as a "small" or "large" spine split. I was actually rather surprised that an objective measurement wasn't provided, so thought I'd ask. Any insight would be helpful! Thanks so much!

Mail day! Ten issues remain! Still not crazy about how wildly #16 has spiked, but at least I can cross it off the list. -

I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct forum for this post, but I was wondering if there's a general guideline to what constitutes a "medium" spine split in grader's notes, rather than small or large. Is it 1"-2"? More? Less? Just curious. There may not even be a guideline and it's just how the grader felt like describing it, but thought I'd ask. Thanks!

What's Your Grail Outside of Your Primary Collection?
Yale Stewart replied to Yale Stewart's topic in Comics General
Wow! That's awesome! I'm not sure what my grail PAGE would be, but probably something from PPSM #75. There's other more important work out there for sure, but that's my all-time favorite superhero issue since I was little.
