  1. Those colors are absolutely blazing! Near Mint Silver Age ASMs.
  2. Great story! My ASM #1 story is similar, I bought mine in 1988 with proceeds from my first real summer job (grunt work in a bank where my Mom worked). My brother, who was still enjoying being unemployed, called me from the comic shop one morning and told me that an ASM #1 had appeared on the wall and I should come in ASAP so it wouldn't get away. I proceeded to call the store just about every hour to check on it, and after my third call the guy working the counter (it was Moondog's store at the time, but I don't think he was there) asked if I would just like to have it held to save me the trouble of all the calls. I hadn't thought to ask that! I went in after work and the book was marked at $100, but anyone with a pull file got 10% off of anything. So I bought my #1 and picked up a VG #5 and a nice-looking #14 for good measure. I think my total purchase price that day was under $200 but honestly I only remember the price on the #1. I got it graded with my first coupon submission, and if I ever upgrade I'm still keeping this one. Sweet! Thanks for sharing your story. It's good that your brother was unemployed and happened to be hanging out at the ol' LCS. :: As for you, grunt work money = ASM #1. My #1 was my first CGC submission too. And I feel the same way you do: when I upgrade, the undercopy stays put.
  3. Please add the following 9 Overstreet Guides to my pile--thanks!: #21-22 #24-27 (the FN/VF copy of #27) #31-33 (the VG copy of #31)
  4. I've shared the background story of this book via PM with a few people and also publicly a few times on the boards. But I am thrilled to say that this sweet book is now back in my possession. Back in 1999, when my wife and I had moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and were in dire straits (couldn't find work), I proposed selling some of my ASM collection to my pops. The idea being we'd get some funds and he'd hold my comics. Included in the 40-issue ASM lot was my #1...which I originally bought 30 summers ago--in July 1981--at the Atlanta Comics and Fantasy Fair. I was a 14-year-old kid and I shelled out a mere 37.50 for it (from lawn mowing money, if I recall correctly) to the folks manning the Great Escape booth (Nashville, TN). The fact I hadn't possessed it in 12 years was bothering me lately so I paid money down to get it back this summer and owe the ol' folks some time payments next month and also in October. So, the lesson is, kids, keep them keys close by. I briefly had possession of it in 2005 when I shelled out around 75 bucks (if memory serves me well) to have it slabbed. Double what I paid for the book itself. :: This book means more to me than my AF #15 and I strongly sense the book will be with me until I'm dispatched to the hereafter... Thanks for listening/reading.
  5. Thanks to greggy for a sweet ASM #202 through one of his VCC charity donations. Shipped promptly and safely from Canada land to the Southern U.S. Nice penmanship too, for what it's worth.
  6. All these distinct declarations of "I have never read..."...juxtaposed against my recent assertion in another thread that you were an intellect. I feel duped. Yet the mention of a Schwinn provides a measure of hope. Now, if you admit to pedaling on a Huffy too, then all is well. If it's a nay, then, well, at least you're still in the top 25 or 50 of buyers.
  7. Spectacular Spider-Man #83 NM- 3.50... Add this one to the pile, please.
  8. None of us are sure if they were overgraded or not... just seems like there should be some leniency when generosity is concerned. and only I dont disagree with any of this. I just dont think its that big of a deal to tell the seller/donator that you disagree with their grades. I probably wouldnt do it, but im not going to chastise someone else for it either. Kudos to Beau in the end. Doing something for a good cause and making sure the buyer was happy. But from your original call out post you clearly let scmitty get to you Are you fellas friends again?
  9. Reasonable, thoughtful posts that you can't really argue with.
  10. Heck of a lot of white pagers in there.
