  1. After taking a quick 3-minute skip and jump though this hour plus long video, it looks like like I will have to revise my old saying that it's far easier to sell one $10K book in today's marketplace as compared to a thousand $10 books. Even with the 25 copies of Batman Adventures 12 they managed to hunt down and the handful of lower grade GA books, I would have to say that it's far far easier to sell one $250K book in today's marketplace as compared to a million multiple copies of the same boxes of MA drek which you would be lucky to get two bits a piece for after factoring in disposal charges.
  2. Yes, if you hang around with the big boys, you can sometimes benefit from the old saying that one person's garbage is another person's treasure.
  3. Better yet, you can use the first guide to check out what bargains or steals of a deal you can still buy today. Perfect example being Four Color 10 with the first Flash Gordon which was the 9th most valuable book in the first Overstreet Guide with a Good valuation of a whopping $85 back then. This red colored beauty (not this particular Church copy though) in Good condition was tied in 9th spot back then with about 10 other books such as Flash 1 and All-Star 3 and just behind Cap 1 at $90 and Batman 1 at a whopping $100: Fast forward all the way to 2021 and the 51st edition of the Overstreet Guide and boy, you've got yourself a steal of a deal as the same Four Color 10 in Good condition will now cost you only $89. If you waited until Covid hit and the collectors all locked down in their homes bidding away on books, you would have had to pay a whopping $93 (i.e. a jump in just one year that's equivlent to the previous 51 years combined ) for a Good condition copy of Four Color 10. Boy, talk about inflation here even though I don't believe this Four Color 10 is still the 9th most valuable book in the comic book marketplace.
  4. Well, I believe this would be correct since this is the date that's been heavily promoted by all of the comic book related websites: https://gemstonepub.com/the-overstreet-comic-book-price-guide-53-avengers-cover/ The real question that I have with respect to this upcoming edition is how is old slow Bob going to handle all of the price decreases that's taken place in the marketplace over the past year, with the sole exception being the GA marketplace which is still running on overdrive in most cases. Especially since we all know how conservative Bob is and absolutely hates to drop prices in his guide. All I can say is he most definitely picked the wrong year to put in all of those triple digit percentage gains in his guide last year because those Covid related crypto induced prices for the more recent books have pretty much all vanished, with some books now even selling for huge double digit percentage discounts to condition guide.
  5. I'm perplexed as to why everybody here is in such a hurry to pay even MORE money to CGC to have their books graded, slabbed, and now also imaged. I am sure this is still a work in progress and they will come out with a positive spin on the whole thing when it's up and running and their billing system is ready to extract even more money from your wallet. Let's see, it'll probably go something like this........................."due to the overwhelming demand for our $5 scanned image service from all of our submittors, CGC will now streamline the entire process by eliminating unnecessary and tedious paperwork for our submittors and hence also improve turnaround times at the same time by providing scanned images for ALL books now submitted to CGC for grading. Once again and as always, CGC is taking another hit on behalf of their submittors by always providing more for our valued customers at a substantially lower cost. Kudos to our CCG ownership group for putting our customers first ahead of the bottom line as submittors will now be charged only an additional $3 for what amounts to a $5 imaging cost with CGC now having to absorb the excess $2 charge ourselves for this unparalled stae of the art next generation imaging service". So, needless to say, but once again.........................CGC DOES IT ALL JUST FOR YOU BY ALWAYS GIVING YOU SO MUCH MORE FOR SO MUCH LESS!!!
  6. Bingo..........that would also be my take on the reason for the difference because the Church books came out in the 77/78 time period when restoration was seen as actually adding value to an unrestored book with defects. As such, not so different then from today except on a more sophisticated and institutionalized basis where "maximization of potential" (i.e. pressing, cleaning, etc.) is seen as adding value to an Universal unrestored book with "fixable" defects. The Allentown books came out in the latter part of the 80's and at a time when the marketplace sentiment had done a complete 180 degree turnaround as restoration by then was viewed to be an absolute no-no and near fraudulent if undisclosed.
  7. Well, I would have to agree with him that there's nothing at all wrong with the book when it is supposed the best existing copy in the world. Heck, as word on the street has it, Dave even turfed out the Church copy of 'Tec 27 from his personal collection to keep the Allentown copy since it was in superior condition.
  8. Likewise with the Denver pedigree with only 153 books in the entire collection, although I imagine there should be a lot more so-called "keys" in there since they are all #1 issues, albeit not in as superior condition grade as the highly sought after Allentown pedigree books.
  9. I believe you are confusing the 'Tec 27 which was graded as a VF/NM by Payette with the 'Tec 29 which was graded as a NM copy by Payette, but ended up being graded and slabbed as a CGC 9.6 (i.e. NM/M) copy by CGC. The Cap 1 was graded the same by both Payette and CGC at NM/M and CGC 9.6 respectively, while the 'Tec 38 was graded by Payette as being only a VF copy, but managed to garner a CGC 9.4 label when graded by the boys at CGC.
  10. Well, I think your question also depends upon your definition of a "key", as I believe each collector here might have their own definition. But if you want to take a look at the scans of a whole slew of the Allentown's that are owned by boardies here, just refer back to the Allentown thread here and then decide for yourself: My searching skills are absolutely terrible here, but the best source for an answer to your question would be the advanced draft write-up that was compiled for the Allentown Collection. Especially in terms of the page that had a detailed list of every single one of the 135 Allentown books along with the original grade assigned to each of them by Jim Payette plus the CGC grade for the books that had been slabbed to that point in time. All I will say is that Jim is a tough tough grader if you compare his grades to the ones assigned by CGC. The sample article I have is a 9-pager dated December 28th of 2006 which was forwarded to me by West in 2007 when work was being done on the inclusion of the Chinatown pedigree for the yet to be published Pedigree Book. I know that there is an updated and more flashier draft write-up for the Allentown Collection that was linked on these boards here, which I hope another boardie with better Search skills can track down for us here.
  11. I would definitely tend to agree with Bronty here and say that only the big keys and high dollar value books would have been slotted into their Signature Auctions. The rest of them could be auctioned off either raw or slabbed in multiple Showcase theme type auctions which they seem to be having more and more of nowadays. Especialy since these DShowcase theme auctions of theirs seems to be a compilation of both lower grade slab or raw books.
  12. Okay, you made me actually go and Googled up PBA Galleries and I found this: PBA Galleries is proud to present a historic event: The sale of The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION The DC UNIVERSE comprises over 40,000 comic books including a copy of every single comic published by DC for retail sale from 1934 through 2014. The collection will be sold in a series of sales beginning with the Batman books on Thursday, November 9th, 2023. Other themed sales will follow in 2024. CGC has awarded this unprecedented collection its own provenance designation: The DC Universe Collection. Hundreds of books from the collection will be graded and certified by CGC. Based upon that blub up above, since only hundreds (i..e. < 1,000) of books will be graded, does that mean tens of thousands or some 98% of them are going to be auctioned off as raw copies at probably much lower than normal prices?
  13. And for these two reasons alone, I would have gone for CC over Heritage if I was choosing between the two. But most definitely not a site like PBA where the the overwhelming majority of potential comic book bidders would not even know about, let alone visit and thengo through the whole registration process in order to bid.
  14. Well, for your info, that's definitely NOT the way it works as it only gets bigger and harder until it comes all over you.
  15. Exactly my thoughts since comic book collecting was well in vogue by then, coupled with the huge popularity of comic book doctors hard at work nowadayss manipulating their books into higher grades as we've even seen cases of CGC 9.0's eventually turning into CGC 9.8's.
  16. For anyboy thinking of going for Alf 48, why not go for the Big Kahuna himself as this would be a rock hard solid choice for sure:
  17. So much easier to find an answer here, namely all of the below:
  18. Well, since all of these books are now going through CC for auction, I guess it's pretty clear that the sellers could have increase their proceeds if they had cut out the "wholesale" middleman (i.e. Flipmode) and gone straight through to CC directly themselves. Nice to hear that they appear to be happy with the offer which they did received from Flipmode in the end through.
  19. I had the same question, as well as why did he initially with Sotheby's, who might be a big name but not when it comes to comics. Exact same question that I had and since @Ian_Levine is here himself, maybe he has an answer to this question as to why the consignor did not go with a much more established comic book auctioneer such as Heritage or CC?
  20. I know a collector who actually uses the Overstreet Guide to value all of his books for submissions to CGC and apparently has never had a bump up in fees as a result. I am sure he's still using the Guide for his GA submissions, but not so sure about some of his later books where the marketplace is now runnning significantly lower than the current Guide price valuations.
  21. I'm going to guess Eternals. Well, if it's indeed Eternals 1 and you can still sell it for $700, you should still be rolling in dough if you are a longer term collector (as opposed to a shorter term speculator) with multiple copies since it was a common as dirt book sitting in the 50 cents drek box for its first 40 odd years of existence.
  22. Clearly remember ASM 121 and 122 being the key BA Spidey's to go after, but if you are talking about BA keys back in the collecting days of the mid 70's, let's not forget about Conan 1 and especially Avengers 93 with 52 pages of stunning Adams cover to cover artwork and you was not considered to be a true collector unless you had one of these in your personal collection.
  23. Every comic book I own. Well, since you joined the boards here in '07 and probably been collecting much longer than that, probably most of your books were brought at much lower than the $700 price point and you are still way ahead.
  24. What book would that be that has dropped from $2,700 all the way down to only $700. assuming it's not a Promise Collection book?
  25. Maybe it's just another typo blunder on their part as I can clearly see the creases on the bottom left of the FRONT cover, but nothing on the back cover from the scan at least.
