I have never seen the appeal of that cover. Cameron's interior work is WAY better. I know he did a lot of Ace work. Did he do much for any other companies?

Yeah, I agree.  Not to take anything away from Cameron but that cover doesn't do much for me.

What? You gotta be kidding me @telerites and @Robot Man

     Let me help.

-Giant dominant green Witch head dripping with a cackling mouth and purple tongue...a Purple tongue!

-It's  set in an apparently abandoned haunted carnival...the ride is broken down.

-Delicious Full signature of the artist playfully written across the front car.

    -Strong yellow-red-green color palette.

-That witch hair...unnecessarily rococo and  detailed. That right there is an artist having some fun. ?

-Sometimes it's what is not illustrated that is the most interesting. What's happening just off cover or behind the scenes? What's behind that spiderwebbed ticket window? What lies on the floor in there? A skeleton? Rat nest? Answers? Or nothing at all? The best art does more than exist as a pretty picture...it springboards your imagination to further places and inspires great stories...even if they exist only in your mind.

Hope that helps. Next time the carny is in town, I hope to see you getting your tickets and boarding the Lou Cameron Precode Horror Boat Ride. ?

  2. This is my most anticipated one so far in this series. Nice to see Lou Cameron finally get a spotlight on his contributions. Also great copy for that cover. One of my favorite Ace covers. Originally was supposed to be out late last year...now a May release. This one is gonna brighten up your bookshelf during the Halloween season or any other time of year for that matter.

Great books Bob. Wow! I've never seen that Secret diary of eerie adventures. Is that your copy? I bet not too many on the census with that one. Also like the mm18

All great books! Clutching Hand is super underrated. Interior stories are pretty violent which is why ACG left their logo off the front cover of this one shot.

Some might be surprised by Impact 1 appearing on my list. Could there be a more horrific experience with a horror comic book than reading the Concentration Camp story? Imagine many young comic book readers during the postwar era reading a story related to the most horrendous and heinous act in world history- the attempt to systematically wipe out an entire people. They're all great books mentioned in this thread but nothing comes close to the most horrific experiences where genocide is concerned: what happened to the millions of Armenians, Cambodians, and Jewish peoples during the 20th Century (I can also mention what's happened in the Balkans, parts of Africa, and China during World War 2; and of course what's happened to indigenous peoples during colonization during the second milenium. Forgive me if I missed anything). EC Comics Impact 1's classic concentration camp story reminds a comic book collector that emphasis should not be based exclusively on cover art during the precode era that followed the end of the Golden Age of comics coinciding with the end of the Good War for the comic book medium. Classic stories have their place and in the case of Impact 1, can tell of a horror beyond the comprehension of many young people in America during the early 50s that had yet to see and truly understand what the Holocaust was. Television was just starting out. Movietone news  and newspapers were the dominant medium for news. Kids and young adults of course, had the comic book. Impact 1 is one of those precode comic books that tells the most insidious and horrific story of all and why it's on my list...

Impact 1 is a great book and that story is a masterpiece.

  5. There are two debates at work:

    -First Horror comic cover

-First Horror comic which has all horror stories for interiors

The best explanation I have read on the subject is from the wonderful zine series, "Tales Too Terrible Too Tell" published by NEC. There are eleven in the series and were released in the 1990s. Worth tracking down for the precode horror collector.

Heres what they have to say:

I’d also like to note that (finally) finding a nice copy of this one is the culmination of a 9 year quest for me. I bought my first Tales from the Crypt in 2009, a raw VF+ copy of 42 I found on eBay (surprisingly it was accurately graded - came back 8.5). I decided I would put together the entire TFTC set in 8.0 or above, starting with CP 15. After collecting Silver Age Marvels, I was looking for a challenge - books that don’t just come along every week in auctions or dealer sites. I loved scaring myself with the HBO show in the 90s, so it seemed like the right title to go after.

I paced myself, expanded into other EC titles (still missing about 20 books in the other crime/ horror/ sci-fi titles), and found my way on to these boards along the way. I’ve made friends here, and when I’m excited about a recent purchase or want to discuss these great comics, this is where I come. Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement along the way!

That is amazing! What a great set. Big congrats. You chose an excellent title to go after. Well done.

So of the lot, do you have a favorite issue? How about your top 3?
