  1. Two of my favorites.... This cover is in my top three easy. A double dose of Friday Fire!
  2. How about Precode Friday original art style? I painted this directly on a short box with watercolor. It holds only Precode horror favorites!
  3. I've always been curious about what exactly was going on on this cover. I see a porthole so I assume they are on a ship and the man is the captain or mate. But the smokey demon and ten dollar bills? Well, if I recall...guy with magic mirror conjures up a demon and sends him to a tugboat captain who is preparing to shortchange him on a deal. Hmmmm. Why all the sawbucks?.... Think we are gonna have to get to the bottom of this....
  4. Geez. Talk about tough! Well maybe there are one or two Precodes that fit that description
  5. My old thing! Great Things this Thursday everyone! What's tomorrow?
  6. What?!? Werewolf Wednesday? How'd I miss out on this? Here's some last minute entries... This guys well on his way: Interior panels: Then there's this one....
  7. Really interesting coloring on that cover. It seems to be moving up too. I think they got over a grand on a 5.5 recently on heritage. It was nearly half that 5 years ago. .... a 5.5 for 1K seems like a small price to pay for that level of bizarre offbeat magnificence ....... I could easily see this becoming a classic cover...... it's lack of exposure is likely the only reason it wasn't already. GOD BLESS... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) Agree. Love that skull spider!
  8. Not with precode but the cover story (T-Rex) gave me nightmares off and on for a decade after I read it as a kid. http://www.comics.org/issue/27376/cover/4/ Awesome! I just got a high grade copy of this book Great stories everyone. Fifties, How about those Ace comics? A bunch of those had giant hands on them... Hand Of Fate? I think this could be a new precode cover genre.... We've already got: -Decapitation covers -Headlights covers -Injury to Eye covers -GGA horror covers -Shrunken Head covers -Drowning/Underwater covers -Skeleton covers -Bad Precode Teeth covers And now......because of Fifties excellent story.... -Giant Creepy hand covers. Let's see em!
  9. I posted these in group shots but they belong here as well. Two great runs of books.
  10. One of my favorites is from this issue. The story "Death's Beggar" tells the tale of a man that makes a deal with a witch to live forever. He soon discovers this is not a good idea! Oh yeah. I love this one too! I remember Shiverbones first posting it years ago. Nice bedtime story for the kids. Also, has this ever happened to any of you? About a year 1/2 or so ago around Halloween which is the time of year I really start getting into these stories with extra enthusiasm, I spent a solid hour reading a bunch of these stories and the Zombie precode reprint book from Yoe Books and went right to bed. It actually gave me nightmares. Real ones that felt and looked just like one of these Precode stories. Then again, I often go around looking at things as if they were drawings in real life. Has anyone else on here had Precode horror comics cause actual nightmare dreams?
  11. COC 23 hasn't shown up in a high profile auction (in a nice grade) in a number of years. If a 9.0 showed up it would do very well I think. (I like 23 better also). I agree. I much prefer COC 23 as well. Always have. Great discussion! I think the concept of buying and discovering comics online is so new that we are seeing the early effects of it now translating into increased prices. It's never been easier to sit back from anywhere 24/7 and attend a comic show online which is essentially what this place is. A 365 day a year comic show where you can learn, discuss, but, sell, trade and even get into an argument if you choose. It's never been easier to get into GA. It only takes a handful of dedicated new collectors to drive up prices on books...especially keys.
  12. One of my favorite stories in that one! Corpse That Came To Dinner is excellent!!
  13. .... now that's one that I've secretly desired in high grade ever since the Gerber's rolled off the presses GOD BLESS... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) Great copy Richard! Nicest copy I have seen. This was one of my first precodes. Bought a solid fine from Gene Carpenter at a show down here in Orlando. This book also sports sweet back cover art as well.
  14. That is FANTASTIC! Yes. And Valentines Day stamp.
  15. Great second episode. I enjoy the stories of acquiring the art but I think I like the psychology and reasons of what the art means to the collectors even more. If there was a way to get more of that out in interviews, that would be interesting. And Steve Borock would be a perfect interview I would imagine. Looking forward to more. I'll be listening. -Christian
  16. Looks great. I'm definitely going to give it a listen.
  17. You might feel differently if you had a pretty copy in your hand Jay (no offense Scrooge I love all copies and you have a great one). I like it for all the reasons you may not Jay. Some of Everett's more favored covers verge on realism where he tried to depict supernatural/horrific things as they may have actually appeared. Here he went the other way and it looks almost cartoonish and for this reason I like it. There really isn't anything like it. As printed, it's not among my favorite Everett's. I'm sure, however, the original art would better reveal Everett's inks and would look far more impressive. The two figures look like a seperate piece of art that was enlarged (perhaps from the interior story? )... and cut out , then pasted over the landscape/buildings which were clearly rendered in the more traditional Bill E fine ink lines.... Superior and Toby used to enlarge I terior panels and reuse them for covers all the time.
  18. Awesome! Gotta love this cover gang. It's the famous air guitar vampire cover. Speaking off, I love how Atlas Precodes were the leader of depicting vampires with huge bat wings in their books... Something that has gone by the wayside in modern depictions of vampires. They truly look menacing with a human like form and sharp pointy wings jutting out of their backs. Good stuff. Gotta live Precode horror.
  19. Its a $250-350 book these days IMHO. I believe the last CGC 5.0 sold for $1100 or so and a CGC 6.5 recently sold on CC for $2500. Amazing, but it has to be near or at the top of the most terrifying covers of the pre-code era. This one is beyond what even EC ever put out. Thanks for the comments. Fifties, wish I paid $22 for mine... And lets not get nuts....Ghastly is still number one!
  20. Woo Hoo - my favorite PCH book! CONGRATS You all have heard of the Mile High collection, well here's a little known fact that Edgar Church's neighbor had a Mile Low collection. These were books he would line his bird cages with and let the dog chew on. This book is from that collection. A boardie sold a copy years ago...VG copy for about $75. Missed it by minutes. This was before the book exploded.
  21. Here are a few Things! Finally got all the gang together for a family photo. Having read then all, I can verify what they say about this run of horror books is true. There isn't a clunker in the bunch. They ALL make great reads.
  22. Fantastic Fears! One of my favorite series of Precodes. Title shortened to simply Fantastic for the last two issues due to the incoming heat of the Code. Favorite issues are: 5 (Ditkos early story "Stretchy Things") 6 (awesome cover and papercutter story).
  23. Finally got this sonovab**ch book recently. It eluded me so many times over the years...this copy is a rag but still looks great in a Mylar.
