I think if I was a big X-guy and someone who requires high grade stuff; I’d find a nice Giant Size X-Men 1. 
Personally, I’d look really hard for the right low grade ASM1 if I was in your situation, particularly if investment isn’t a prime concern.

I always thought “Thing” read so awkwardly in sentences - maybe that alone is the reason for the switch. 

For the same reason that, if you were speaking to him, you'd call Norrin Radd, "Surfer", or The Vision, "Vision". You wouldn't ever say; "Hey, The Hulk, come have some beans!"

Happily, they stopped referring to him as "Thing", and just went with "Ben".

I understand your confusion. 
You’re right; Panic 1 was easy and cheap. Then the universe heard that I kind of wanted one, and the pricing you see now kicked in. 
The good news is, after I get a copy and then make the decision to sell it, prices will drop right back down again.

I used to feel exactly the same way. 

But after some great interactions with boardies like Jon Berk and the ever-effervescent Billy Parker, I honestly believe that the “big dogs” are NOT looking down on anyone’s collection.

I think people here just want us to be genuinely enthusiastic about our comics; whatever they may be.

And while it’s certainly possible that I’m underestimating their current value, the last time I looked (< 2 years) I could buy a similar grade #1 for $5.
