  1. Matt Nelson also had a Skull the Slayer #7 that had an erroneous 30 cent variant on the CGC label... however unlike that one this one is actually on the census as a variant. I wonder if he has a nice MSH #59 that he will be submitting as well... might make a nice non-variant set!

  2. So if there is no difference in the book besides the price, ie 12 cent v 15 cent. Then how do you know for sure its a Canadian variant and not a simple price variant.

Question: With the 75c and 95c Marvels, are there differences other than the price area, or are there other indicators?

All the Canadian editions are newstand versions but I believe that otherwise they are identical.

  3. Yes Cosmic,

I received Kid Colt 206 and 207 in the mail yesterday which completed my 30 cent variant set. Thanks Glenn.

Kid Colt 208, Ringo Kid 28 and Rawhide Kid 134 were the balance of the last five, and fortunately all came up at the same time after almost two years of searching.

I want to thank Harry, Darth, FlyingDonut, Metarog and Glenn in particular for helping me complete the set. Also Cosmic (Terry) is a real standup guy as he was willing to send me his KC 206 to complete the set.

Congratulations... I must say I am very surprised you got this set together so quickly. I'm sure there will be upgrading in the future but just to get the set finished is quite an accomplishment. Hope we can chat soon.

  4. Also, in regards to Marvel 30 cent variants, it is nice that Overstreet has priced every book in 9.2.

Here is the current list of 30 centers that have no examples certified in 9.2. Some excellent clues to rarity here, I think. Find one of these and it will go multiples of guide.

    Avengers 14 (one in 9.0)

Captain Marvel 44 (one in 9.0)

Chamber of Chills 22 (two in 8.5)

Chamber of Chills 23 (three in 9.0)

Jungle Action 21 (one in 9.0)

Kid Colt Outlaw 205 (one in 9.0)

Kid Colt Outlaw 206 (one in 9.0)

Kid Colt Outlaw 207 (one in 8.5)

Kid Colt Outlaw 208 (one in 9.0)

Kid Colt Outlaw 209 (two in 8.5)

Marvel Adventures 3 (one in 8.5)

Marvel Adventues 4 (one in 8.0)!!!!

Marvel Double Feature 17 (one in 8.0)!!!!

    Marvel Super-Heroes 57 (two in 8.5)

    Marvel Super-Heroes 58 (one in 9.0)

Marvel Tales 66 (one in 7.0)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marvel Tales 69 (one in 9.0)

Mighty Marvel Western 45 (one in 9.0)

Rawhide Kid 133 (one in 9.0)

Rawhide Kid 134 (one in 7.5)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ringo Kid 28 (two in 8.0)

Tomb of Darkness 21 (one in 8.5)

Tomb of Dracula 44 (four in 9.0)

    Two-Gun Kid 130 (two in 8.0)

    Two-Gun Kid 131 (one in 7.0)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weird Wonder Tales 15 (one in 7.5) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and I would buy 9.2s all day for $27.) Actually, if anyone has a 1.0, I will buy it for $27.

By the way, if you want additional information on variants, stlcomics.com is a great site.

Just as an FYI... I keep an updated list of the top grades for Marvel 30- and 35-cent variants on my site.

Thanks for the handy list VM... the only error I saw was that you have any entry for Amazing Adventures #35 maybe it was CGC that messed up but there is no 30 cent variant for that issue.

  5. Those Gold Keys might be Canadian editions. As to the 30 cent variants... as Craig said those prices are still off but they are changing in the right direction even if at a snails pace. Overstreet still uses the dynamics for regular issues on the variants which is of course very different. The price for Marvel Spotlight #28 is more based on the early Moon Knight appearance than its rarity which 30 cent completists generally do not give a hoot about and there is not enough Moon Knight completists to make this a must have for a huge pool of collectors unlike some X-Men and Spider-Man for example.

There are probably more examples of 9.2s than you might think as many of us have not CGCed all our high grade stuff. I know FD, SilverandBronze, Shieldagent and myself have many high grade examples that are still raw. Besides the COC #22 I have which is an easy 9.2 and probably 9.4 I have a raw Marvel Chillers #4 which is just perfect... 9.8 candidate. I also have an Invaders #7, MGC #64, Black Goliath #2, Cap #196, Hulk #198 and a few dozen more that are around 9.2 or better. However, some of the rarer variants are very scarce in high grade and I know of no one who has a TGK #131 above Fine. Thanks again for the update FD!

  6. Anyone ever noticed how Weird Wonder Tales 21 has a cover price of 30 cents , but 25 cents on the indica?

No, I didn't know. I am assuming all issue are the same right? This was several months after they changed the price so Marvel really messed up.

  7. Yep, that is one of the National Book Store editions sold in the Phillipines. They have odd issues of Marvel and DC issues. I have seen a JLA 136, Batman 236 and several Marvels as well.

was there a superboy 31 version?

Yes, Metarog, I would be interested to know the answer to this one as well?

I have not seen it as a National Book Store copy... now as to the Whitman variant  I must have been seeing things again!

  8. That is a really nice looking 98 for an 8.0... looks like at least a 9.0 to me. The 99 is nice but one of my pet peeves is the "cut off" starburst on the top and X-Men #99 is one of those that are hard to find with a complete starburst. All the ones I've bought had at least a portion of that top starburst missing.

  9. Hello,

All you fellow price variant collectors I have collected comics off and on for some thirty years and just started to set out on the thirty cent variant set I have purchased from Don at Gateway, Darthdiesel on e-bay (not recieved yet), and a couple other e-bay sellers. I want to thank Shieldagent & Metarog from over at the Stl fourms for just replying to post I've made there. Should I forget James no I thank him too.

I have never posted here at CGC boards but have read alot of the threads and just tonight went through the first 40 pages of the Price Variant Club and just to let you know I read the RULES but forgive me if I slip. Whoops already did. The next 40 another night.

#1 - The first rule of Price Variant Club is, you do not talk about Price Variant Club.

#2 - The second rule of Price Variant Club is, you DO NOT talk about Price Variant Club.

#3 - If someone says that's one of the last five I need and pleads, you let him have it.

#4 - Nobody ends auctions early.

#5 - No flaming other members of Price Variant Club because they got the Ringo Kid 28 and you didn't.

#6 - Do not alert members of Price Variant Club for hidden variants. Let them find their own damn variants.

#7 - 35 cent variant collectors are insane.

#8 - If you found a variant through Price Variant Club, you have to find another one.

There is a lot of useful info in those first 40 threads, I read somewhere not here but else where their is five known complete thirty cent sets or am I wrong?

So what is the Initiation to join this club not giving up any comics lol.

    Thank you,

    nanoc

Welcome to the Club, BTW there are 6 known complete sets with another one rumored and 2 others that are getting close. The complete sets are-in order of completion:

    FlyingDonut

    Silver&Bronze

    4Gemworks

    Darthdeisel

    Shieldagent

    Metarog

I completed mine right before Christmas 2006 after a little more than two years of hunting.

My advice to you would be to network with all the variant collectors and be patient if you are on a budget. It will take several years to get all the western, horror and reprint titles so keep your eyes open but pick and choose your E-bay battles. There will be frustration and disappointment along with nice surprises and cheap finds... remember this is a marathon and not a sprint!

Keep us posted on your progress and good luck!

  10. Hmmm, this looks just like an 8.5 with the same labeling error that he had for sale some months back. Yeah, I've got some Marvel Tales 71 variants also! Heck, we could expand the set to well over 190 issues with all these pseudovariants!

  11.

    As to "wild" variants...

Hey Rog, we were only talking about "wild" westerns.

    sorry.gif

Ahhh, I get it now... no wild westerns for me unfortunately.

Hopefully I will run into a minty TGK 131 someday... tongue.gif

  12. Go for it Terry! There is competition but you will complete it eventually.

As to "wild" variants... I think I have only found two living down here is South Florida which is essentially a comic desert. I did find two 30 centers in Orlando a few years ago... a Marvel Feature 4 and a Thor 247 or 249. I have found several 35 cent variants in the Eastern North Florida area including a nice PowerMan 47 which Terry now has.

I think I remember the KC 207 Carl is talking about... it was the slabbed 1.0 wasn't it? You also have the infamous TGK 130 1.8 Tuberculosis comic? Is there a story behind that one too?

I have a TGK 131 (which I need to upgrade) with a faded stain on the front cover that looks like it could be some bodily fluid residue... I haven't gotten up the courage to smell it so it is quarantined from the rest of my variants in case it is still contagious.

My last variant oddity is a Powerman #30 that has the staples placed so far into the comic that you can't read the first 20% of any page. I really like this comic though since it is so fresh and crisp (probably because nobody could read it). This is the keeper in my 30 cent variant collection.

  13. I agree that those Marvel Tales are tough above Fine... my #70 needs an upgrade in fact. My last 4 were:

    Kid Colt Outlaw 207

    Ringo Kid 28-Thanks Harry!

    Rawhide Kid 134

    Kid Colt Outlaw 208

and in that order too. Of course after I got the KC #207 from a large lot on E-Bay another 3 came out in the next few months. I haven't seen any of my last 3 for sale in the past few years so those would be the toughest overall IMHO. I will also add that nobody seems to have an above mid-grade copy of TGK #131 (maybe Paul?) so that would be the scarcest in high grade as far as I can figure.

  14. I've been a bit out touch, but those are ridiculously clueless prices.

Definitely and the shame is that there is so much data and expertise to draw on. I don't know if Overstreet gets input from its advisors on these variants or just ignores them but something is amiss. Certainly no one who has tracked 30 variants in the past 4 years was listenend to. Just a casual observation of E-Bay and ComicLink would be enough to debunk most of these prices.

There is also a thread on the STLcomics board which tracks prices of almost all 30 variants on E-Bay and there is also GPA for slabbed variants, etc. I understand that this is just a guide and not reflective of every transaction for the past few years but to have so many entries so far off base is really inexcusable. I don't have a recent OPG but it seems that the majority of the changes are just mirroring what the regular edition is doing and adding in a variant increase. If you take a look at Iron Man 89 you will see what I mean. They are all priced the same even though we all know that IM 89 is much tougher to find and goes for more money.

Unfortunately, the dynamics fort variants and the regular issues are so different that you get a totally useless tool for 30 cent variants. Unlike the regular editions the reprints are the tougher to find and thus more expensive. Some of the Westers do show an increase over the regular editions but not nearly enough in the higher grades. I'm assuming that the prices for the 35 cent variants are also skewed. Christo_pull_hair.gif

  15. Thanks for posting this up FD. I don't know what universe they get these prices from but it certainly isn't this one. Except for the X-Men variants and maybe a few others they are totally out of whack. What was the last time you saw a VG Marvel Tales for under $10 much less a 9.2? Probably never unless it was a hidden. I could go on and on but I am sure this has been discussed to death already. I'd gladly pay double guide for a 9.2 WWT #15 or TGK #131.. . oh and the same for a MMW #45. Any takers?

  16. I know I've not been on here for a while, but Metarog asked me to post up the ridiculously rare "Aquateers Meet The Superfriends" mini-comic, that I just finally got after nearly thirty years.

    Here is the pic... Aquateers.jpg

It is just amazing how rare this comic is... nobody on the Net that I could find had even seen a copy before last week. I was beginning to think that no more copies existed! Great find. thumbsup2.gif)
