So, are there really only 6 complete sets that we know of? I figured a couple of others would have finished by now.
Yep, as far as I know here are the only six (I think this is the order) and like Harry said two more still in progress...

I'd be interested to know how long it took each of you from the first variant to the last. It took me exactly 2 years and 4 months from when I got my MTU #45 to th KC #208. Of course I had many advantages in that I had access to a whole bunch of people that had dupes. I am curious though.
It took me just over 5 years (this is really depressing--never thought of it this way).
One of the best things is that, by forcing me to go through 1000's of neglected long-boxes in dozens of small, often-failing stores, I found some of the biggest bargains of my collecting life, and it really rekindled my love of BA books.
Wow, that must have been fun and I am sure sometimes frustrating. I personally love going through cheap back-issue long boxes but those are a thing of the distant past here in Miami. It must be nearly 10 years since we had a convention down here too. I think I only found two 30 cent variants in comic shops... all the rest came through deals with dealers/collectors or via E-Bay.

Congrats to Roger!
I started right after CBM 55 came out, and finished the last one in 2001 some time.
Thanks FD, I know I got at least one variant off you and I know you were looking for my last two as well. I really appreciate it. So based on the above it took about 4 years. Pretty impressive since at that time I don't think much of anybody listed these as variants on E-Bay.

Ha Ha, thanks again. I probably have the lowest grade set of the six known as I mostly have mid-grade copies with maybe a half dozen lower grades and about the same number NM or above. I am now concentrating on upgrading those 5 or 6.

Hey, I am now a Gold club member of the 30 cent variant club! I recieved my last two westerns this week after more than a year of needing them. Here they are-
Thanks to all of you who have helped me in this quest.

The top banner and price box are also a different color than the US edition.

I have just solved everybodies problem. Call the US patent office. Maybe esquire could help us on this one. If double action # 1 is truely an ashcan and it truely exist. The patent office should have some information on hand.
Good thought but the Patent office is for inventions not copyright which is what this would be. I am not a Patent attorney but copyrights are registered differently.
The US Patent and Trademark Office is for filing patents (inventions) and trademarks (marks used to distinguish goods in the marketplace). The ashcans would have been filed with the USPTO to trademark the superhero names and comic book titles. The books had copyright protection as soon as they were created. No filing is necessary, although registration gives extra protections.
I did a search of the USPTO online and there is no record of Double Action Comics being filed with the USPTO. There is a record of Action Comics being filed on 12/01/1937.
Boy, law school was so long ago! I totally forgot that these were just cobbled together to protect the titles and such not the actual content which would be copyright.

Yes, all the interior pages are black and white. This is, of courrse, one of the Ian Levine commissioned replica editions and not the actual DAC #1 if it exists.

I have one but it is not for sale.
Here is the inside front cover.

Keep those 30 centers coming. If I can make a request... Black Goliath #3 and MOKF 30 centers as I need some upgrades of those.

Two 30 cent variants on GR
Keep those 30 centers coming... the GR #18 looks superb!

Thanks for posting that up FD! Some of those prices are so out-of-whack though!
How come the easy to find Defenders go up $33 to $40 and Weird Wonder Tales stay at $21???
Do these folks ever track any of these on E-Bay?
Rawhide Kid 134 $20 $30 $10 50.00% This is a joke... I would pay 5 times that for any condition as long as complete! Anybody???
On the other side the X-Men are bit too much. There was a recent X-Men that looked about 9.2 that did not sell at $115.

I just came across some Francis, Brother of the Universe #1's. One has a 75 cent cover price. Another has a $1 cover price.
Is that the Canadian version?
This probably is a Canadian edition... some other titles went from $.75 to $1.00 Canadian. Such as-

Based on the description it does not appear to have comics in it. Looks like it has staged pictures of crimes (thus the title) that you have to slueth. Interesting and published by a company that also did comics so maybe that had something to do with the Gerber listing.
Here is another auction with this book- http://cgi.ebay.ca/Original-June-1937-Nu...3QQcmdZViewItem

Take a look at this auction-

This book is listed in Gerber but it sure doesn't appear to be a comic book! Major error in the Gerber guide with this one.

I saw the Westerns but laid off since I have them already and I knew that others needed them for their sets. Unless it is one of the two Westerns I need for the set-I am not going after it with serious money.
I also need to upgrade a few but I can wait for the right grade and price. I really really want to finish the set this year though!

Okay this looks like a variant but data would suggest otherwise? Here is my 9.6 copy and as you can see the price tage is completely different. Thoughts, comments.
That is a Direct Sale edition of FF 199 sometimes referred to as Whitman variants although there is some doubt that all of these were distributed by Western Publishing. Gifflefunk's site has the best info on the subject-

Nice find Jeff, and if you or anybody finds any 30 cent western variants please let Harry and I know as we are so darned close yet so far from that elusive complete set!
-
Thanks Ian and congrats on finally getting one of these. Based on the serial number it is possible there were only 2 or 3 thousand of these ordered.
-
Hey Ian, could you post up a nice size scan of the Rain Blo? I have never gotten a real good look at one. Thanks.
-
Great pics Ian, btw I think that one with the cover of Superman #14 is the Superman Workbook.
-
Incredible indeed and yet there are still those DC giveaways to get so don't we still have to keep a lookout for those. I am suprised somebody on here doesn't have one of those personalized Batman Rain-Blo sendaway comics. Of course some of the giveaways like Supergear are notoriously rare and may be really tough to find.
Post up you DC promo list when you have compiled it-that will be a great resource for promo collectors.
Regardless congratulations for completing this monumental quest!

Thanks Carl, you were a big part of my being able to complete it and upgrade many issues as well. Good to hear from you too. I didn't know you compiled the set so quickly! 18 months is definitely the quickest and you have the highest quality set as well. I still need some upgrades so when the Christmas bills are paid I will send you an e-mail.
