  1. I'd been wanting one of these but prices were set too darn high. Picked this one up cheap on the Bay. This was a 1959 giveaway. I don't know how rare it is - this is one of only two graded and the only price Overstreet lists is the $633 the CGC 9.9 sold for. As I said, I have seen some raw, so I don't know if there was a small find of these or if the same ones keep getting offered up for sale. The cool part with this one was the business-card size Junior Bush Pilot card the seller included. I guess with one airplane for every three Alaskans, they should have had a bit of a fan base up there.
  2. Glad everything made it safely. Kudos also to Loki (who I would want as my Secret Santa) bghkoyama MightyBeanComics flatrock02 rjpb Jayman
  3. Nice, Danny! Congrats! White pages! Dangit. Break it out and tell me which uniform was the oddest.
  4. :hail: Nice thread.......Baptist convention...... Does anyone know Wertham's religious background? I bet those leaving that con were convinced that comics were "of the devil." It reminds me of logical fallacies and the ol' post hoc fallacy...the event of comic books eventually led to a rise in juvenile delinquency. Not that Baptists should be singled out--plenty of atheists, agnostics, and other religiously persuaded folks have been/are guilty of a lack of thinking. And back in the '50s and '60s they didn't even have the distraction of the world-wide Web or reality TV. But as we soon learned, it was really Rock 'n' roll that was responsible for juvenile delinquency, at least until television became the reason for it. But video games, yeah, that's it, violent video games are the real reason for all the juvenile delinquency. (I'm looking forward to the day comics can be to blame again.)
  5. I just picked up more than 200 of these EC reprints from Designer Toast. The books are great. I should be done reading them all by around 2012. Great stuff, but if you are going to hire Wally Wood and Al Williamson, perhaps you should put a bit less text on each page. I am starting with the Weird Science Fiction, largely because of Bradbury and then figured I'd read Panic because the serial-killing Santa was just too funny. I know the art is amazing on these books, but any favorites for stories?
  6. These were a great couple of bonus books on that lot. Definitely one of the most dynamic Blackhawk covers, but I agree the Plastic Man is a really cool piece.
  7. Designer Toast Shipped a couple hundred nice EC reprints quickly and safely. A pleasure to buy from. Great communication followthrough.
  8. Looks like you were active on Mastro tonight. Beautiful pickups. I thought I was going to be doing a lot of scanning and selling this weekend when I thought I had won the 16 Military Comics. Some decent deals in the little auction tonight.
  9. They are riveting! You're nuts! Screw those covers.
  10. Wow, that would have to be a very interesting debate. Thanks for all those who are sharing ... and how the heck did you guys get such nice copies of those Reader's Digests?
  11. I think that one makes alot of sence. My Copy has a page at 399 ripped out.. I should start reading the whole book. I read part of it and stopped. How does one tell if its a 1st print or a 2nd print? Pretty sure mine is a second print but want to be sure I believe this one with the bibliography page is a first print. The second printing I have is noted on the dust jacket and the R with the circle around it is missing on the publisher's page.
  12. My understanding was fear of lawsuits, but that is one of the reasons people use bibliographies (to give credit and avoid lawsuits). No explanation ever made much sense, but they are tough to find with the page intact, so it was removed early on.
  13. Here are the bibliography pages (I paid an extra $250 to get a copy with this page to go with my redacted copy! What was I thinking?!?) By the way, if you have never read the book, you really should. It is very well written and is fascinating, even if unconvincing. Biblio ---------------------- no Biblio
  14. Id like an answer to this too. Has anyone ever dealt with Goldenagecomics before? I have purchased from them and was very happy with their communication and professionalism. I asked for scans of some of the pricier books and decided to pass because I felt they were overgraded, but on the VGish books I purchased, I felt their grading was accurate and was happy with my purchase. I would buy from them again, but I would like to take a look at the more expensive or higher grade books before I made the buy. I did appreciate their high quality scans on the books I requested. These are the two books I was most interested in. Strange Adventures #80 in VF for $160 CDNP #40 in NM for $525
  15. Courtesy Jonjesper: Great Mahnke Man Who Laughed re-creation on playing card. And apparently I am cornering the market on this book. Only two listed by CGC (but the SS is not listed). Joins this one
  16. Kudos to Jonjesper for a nice SS, but especially for this incredible Man Who Laughed re-creation by Mahnke on a playing card.
  17. Did you send the difference anyway? Yep, but I nearly missed it. I was impressed with the safe packaging and then I was wondering how the heck he could send it cheaper from Germany than I could have sent it in the US so I pulled the envelope out of the trash to check. It is also worth noting, we had never dealt with each other. Hesdeadjim picked up the print at a convention with a batch of other stuff and contacted me to offer it free simply because he saw I collect poker/playing card items. A class act.
  18. 1. The Germans 2. Killer Shark (I loved the wartime comics, but especially Blackhawk.)
  19. Kudos to hesdeadjim, who came across a cool signed print of a girl in a playing card print dress. He gave it to me for the price of shipping. (thumbs u However, when the safely packed print arrived, I saw it cost twice what he thought it would and he never bothered to ask for me to send him difference. The print he shipped from Germany:
  20. Beautiful books you submitted. I love seeing the grades they were described when purchased. It is hard to know how accurate they are. However, I must say that the dealers were remarkably careful, seeming to grade carefully and even undergrading more than overgrading. Maybe I need to be buying more Heritage NM- books.
  21. I'd love to read that. I'll give you $10 so you can double your money quickly. Nice book.
