  1. Feel free to let Ms. Ukai know that I would be more than happy to let her use an image of a painted New Year's card depicting Topaz internment camp made by Chiura Obata when he and his family was interned there, if she need additional items. Feel free to PM me if she's interested and wants a decent scan.
  2. Thanks to everyone for their advice and wisdom. The book sold itself and has now found a very good home. I'm on to some new hunts and some new submissions to CGC.
  3. That's Grimes' book. If that's a pre-cleaning picture, it's the only one I've seen. Bedrock, are you saying Darrel sold it?
  4. You would know better than me. I'm basing my statement on Rob Larson's site where he calls it an "anecdotal" (not CGC) 8.5.
  5. Process of elimination. It has to be an Action 1 or a D27. Dave Anderson and Ayman Hariri own the top three Action 1s. But, it could be the Action 1 8.5 or Kansas City Action 1 8.0. Dave Anderson also owns the top D27 ("Allentown"). The "other high grade" D27 is in unknown hands - which means it is a top contender given the secrecy some are showing here ... or that book might actually be the 9.2 D27 - another good contender. Could be the Church D27 8.5. Hariri's D27 is in a fortress and doesn't look like it is as high grade as the above. So I'm guessing someone on the boards owns the Action 1 8.5, Kansas City Action 1 8.0, Detective 27 9.2 or Church Detective 27 8.5.
  6. Modern press and grade Submitted at SF Con - 9/1 Made it to Florida - 9/7 "At CCS" (and invoiced) - 11/27 "Received" by CGC - 12/6
  7. Given that you are facing a total fire loss, I imagine the biggest issue you'll be facing is the question of whether your total limits of insurance are adequate. If, for example, your non-comic personal property losses are going to max out your applicable limits, you may want to put off the arduous task of trying to value thousands of comics. You might want to start with the big books until you hit limits. As for methodology, you are going to need to calculate the market value or replacement value (which are essentially the same here). The best method to do that is either using (1) actual comparable sales (GPA and auction results probably works for all books, but not Overstreet) or (2) the price of actual comparable items for sale (e.g. listings).
  8. Thanks to everyone for sharing their wisdom. Really great thing about these boards!
  9. Thanks again for being generous with your information and advice!
  10. Good to know there's an exact comparable out there! Do you own it or do you know when it last sold and for how much? If you got any advice or suggestions, I'm all ears, thanks.
  11. After pondering it for over a week, I've come to the realization that I have no need or desire to own the highest graded copy of a particular comic book. I just don't see myself putting together a "highest graded" run, and I now realize I'd be perfectly happy with a lesser graded copy that is not "the best" copy. Especially, when I can sell the "highest graded" copy, get a nice lesser copy, and have a nice profit to spend on other targets (have cake and eat it too). I also feel a personal bonus in getting a comic to the collector who will appreciate it the most (which is why, for example, I sold my copy of The Nightingale to SOTIcollector so he could complete his collection of every book mentioned in SOTI and why I have not, and never will, sell other items that are core to my collection) and I know there are collectors out there chasing the "highest graded" book runs. But, here's the thing: I'm a buyer, not a seller. Aside from that sale to SOTIcollector, I rarely sell. So I'm not quite sure what to do. Advice would be appreciated. What I want to do is sell my FC 456 9.4 (white) "Uncle Scrooge (no. 2) - Back to the Klondike." It's the highest rated on the census (1 of 2, once they update it), and I believe the other 9.4 may be ow/w or worse because most of the file copies are not pure white pages. Consequently, I think my copy could be the best copy of a book that features the first appearance of Scrooge's long lost love Glittering Goldie and is widely viewed by Duck collectors as one of the most important stories in shaping the Scrooge mythos and characterization. Here's my issues: (1) I don't know the value of this comic. Yeah, I know, I'm not supposed to admit that. But, there is no GPA on a 9.4. The other 9.4 has not ever sold as far as I can tell. There are three relatively recent transactions in the last 12 months that might help benchmark the price: * 9.2 (ow/w), 1 of 3, sold for $5,975.00 on May 19, 2017 at Heritage. *9.0 (ow/w), 1 of 4, sold for $2,270.5 on February 18, 2016 at Heritage. * 8.5 (ow/w), 1 of 8, sold for $836.50 on May 28, 2017 at Heritage. Using those prices as benchmarks, which show an exponential increase at the higher grades of over 2x, I'm thinking my FC 456 has a potential value in excess of $12K. Let me know if you think I'm crazy. I actually think this estimate is probably low, as a Four Color 386 (U.S. No. 1) in 9.0 (ow/w), 1 of 18 and with 16 higher copies, sold for $4,899.50 with a 9.2 (ow/w), 1 of 9, selling the same day for $13,145.00 on August 10, 2017 at Heritage. Those are strong prices, and a record for a 9.2 at Heritage (notable because there are six 9.4 and one 9.6)! I think an experienced seller would be able to do very well. However, I realize those are all prices for Heritage, and I don't want to sell through Heritage. Instead ... (2) I'd like to sell it outside of an auction. Just don't want to pay high fees. Which begs my questions for which I need advice: Does anyone know any dealers who know the high end Duck buyers who would be willing to accept a decent percentage to facilitate a transaction? Or should I just solicit dealer offers and forget about finding someone to connect me with the right end buyers? I realize the downside of his route is that my price would need to reflect that dealers need to make money, but it might have the advantage of speed. Or should I sell on the Boards? I don't see Ducks (especially high end Ducks) being offered on the Boards, so I've sort of given up on this option. Or am I being an insufficiently_thoughtful_person who should just sell in an auction? If so, which? Or should I just try out some or all of the above options in some sort of sequential order and see what happens. I admit it, I'm a newbie when it comes to selling. And, no, I feel no embarrassment at admitting my ignorance or fear of being taken advantage of. Generally, I feel the folks here give good advice because they want the hobby to thrive.
  12. Modern press and grade Submitted at SF Con - 9/1 Made it to Florida - 9/7 Finally "At CCS" (and invoiced) - 11/27 A little slow, I think. Anyone want to predict how long this modern press and grade submission takes? I'm exactly 3 months in today.
  13. Not meaning to start a political discussion, but this tweet by Mark Zaid got me laughing:
  14. Got my FC 456 (Uncle Scrooge No. 2 - "Back to the Klondike") back from CGC today: The book is notable as the first appearance of Glittering Goldie, Scrooge's lost love, and the story "Back to the Klondike" is recognized as one of, if not the, most important stories to the Scrooge characterization (greedy with a heart of gold) and mythos that made him a star. It is the highest graded example (1/2), and the other 9.4 copy does not, I believe, have white pages. Notably, the only file copies that have been graded to my knowledge ended up with lower grades (8.0 and 6.0) and page quality. Similarly, the Crowley copy is also only a mid-grade book.
  15. I display a lot of fine art on paper in my house. The key is keeping it out of direct sunlight and UV protection. Here's where I differ from many on this thread: Do NOT use UV protective glass. Use UV protective acrylic. Glass can shatter and puncture your art. Acrylic will not. Plus, it is lighter and thus is less of a load on your hangers. These days, you can also pay the price for a very cool non-glare acrylic which is a joy to behold. An amazing product. Now standard of care for Museums. https://tru-vue.com/solution/optium-museum-acrylic/
  16. Next FC I'm sending to CGC: Love this cover as I'm a Duck in California.
  17. My mom loves mysteries and used to read the mystery digest. I remember the tv show. How many FCs do you have, Scrooge?
  18. Well ... it was certainly worth the wait! I'm blown over by how well this GA book did! Far exceeded expectations. Top of census. A dream first submission to CGC! I have no complaints at all about the time or the result. Here's my final stats at CGC: GA Fast Track Economy Pressing and Grading: Submitted at SF Con - 9/1 Made it to Florida - 9/7 CGC Invoice Date - 10/12 CGC "Verified" - 10/23 CGC "Scheduled for Grading" - 11/10 CGC "Graded" - 11/10 CGC "Quality Control" - 11/16 CGC "Shipped Safe" - 11/17 Total days since Con submission so far: 78 days Total days at CCS: 34 days (9/7 to 10/11) Total days at CGC since finished by CCS: 37 days Total days at "verified": 18 days (10/23 to 11/10) Total days at "scheduled for grading": 2 hours Total days at "graded": 6 days (11/10 to 11/16) Total days at "quality control": 1 day (4 p.m. Thursday to 1:30 p.m. on Friday - so really maybe 5 hours or so)
  19. I think I am hitting the worst case. It's 5:00 p.m. and I'm still sitting at "Grading/Quality Control." My only hope is that they work late.
  20. The craziest price ever was Edgar Church's family asking 10 cents each.
