To Pedigree or not to Pedigree, That is the question?
Sqeggs replied to action1kid's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I'd agree if the book were "a tick lower." Probably not if the ped copy is two ticks plus a smidgen lower. I do like peds, even if they're Crowleys or foxy Crippens. It adds to my enjoyment of the hobby to some idea of the history of the books I'm collecting. -
Not sure if I posted this one before. Baker auction closing on HA on Thursday. None of the books are mine and none would be upgrades, so I guess I'll just be observing from the sidelines. Looks like a way for somebody fairly new to Baker collecting to fill some holes. Certainly a lot of mid-grade books to chose from.

That was the one time I met him as well. Appreciated and learned a lot from his contributions to the Comic Book Marketplace. His articles about tracking down Lamont Larson were classics. He assembled what was likely one of the best half dozen or so non-OO collections. There's been nothing quite like the CC auction of his collection. I own the Larson copy of Jumbo 10. I guess I probably had to outbid you for it!

Did some Atlas romance books if I'm remembering correctly. Good work, although a rung below Colletta, imo.

I have trouble figuring out IG as well. Might be because we're

I think Alice may have been better off letting that rag doll stay lost.

GA With Less Than Ten Copies in the CGC Census
Sqeggs replied to circumstances's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
You have to careful with that book because some copies have issues with Baker art and some don't. Dealers will sometimes list a copy as having Baker even if it doesn't. -
Really tough to say whether it might not just be the result of a normal press. Doesn't seem nearly as obvious as some of the spine shifting antics people identified a few years ago.

PBA galleries auctioneers new collection 40000+ Every DC
Sqeggs replied to Tbone911t's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
You should have kept bidding, then I would have kept bidding! If only the second mortgage had been approved sooner, I'd own that book. -

Kind of like the story that MPFW supposedly actually was given away at one theater in ... Boston, maybe? -
ComicConnect's Next Event Auction has started posting books !
Sqeggs replied to batman_fan's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Even in CC's big auctions they usually list a bunch of mid-grade SA Marvels and DCs, something you never see HA do in their Signature auctions. -

Sqeggs replied to batman_fan's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Yep. HA routinely sells books in their weekly auctions that CC and CL would save for their prime, ultra, supreme or whatever they're called auctions. -

With respect to the reholdering, I'll hazard a guess that it's the result of an unsuccessful attempt to bump the grade. -

The original plan was to have Namor take on Commies in issue 42 and crooks in issue 43 but when the strip was canceled, Stan had to do a quick rewrite. True story. -
A thousand copies of Major Inpak?

If it's crossword puzzles with illustrations I don't think it fits GCD's definition of a comic book. There are other books that you might think they'd list--DC's obscure "It's Game Time" run comes to mind--but they don't.

The S&K SSCs don't get a lot of love these days but they really are prime S&K. Supposedly the cover is just Kirby but the figure of the Guardian sure looks like Simon to me.

Interesting run. Not sure I've seen this issue before.

Golden Age Mystery: who did the cover for Blazing Western #5?
Sqeggs replied to Falcon760's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Was there originally a horse under the guy in mid-air? Kind of unlikely that the impact of a bullet from a six-gun would send him five feet in the air. -

Nice pick up. Only two copies on the census. -

Probably been remarked on already but I recently stumbled on this failed flip. https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/funny-animal/terry-toons-comics-38-the-promise-collection-pedigree-timely-1945-cgc-nm-96-white-pages/a/7248-93177.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/funny-animal/terry-toons-comics-38-the-promise-collection-pedigree-timely-1945-cgc-nm-96-white-pages/a/7283-93086.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515 Unless the original "sale" didn't actually go through. -
