…back in 2011, there was a lot of trepidation about the cover being on two boards, something which almost nobody cares about these days….

Have to disagree with this. Take a step back and look again. Miller. Elektra. Vintage. An absolutely fantastic image. If drawn on one board it would have gone for 2x the result. Probably much more.

Actually if this were drawn on one board the consignor probably would not have selected it to consign. It would take a 7-figure offer to pry it away.

    Just my 2c

What do you think about the Avengers 1 page that went for 110K on clink?

    On target, low or high?

I have often wondered why Kirby Avengers pages were so "low."

Between the great character content, the surge of Avengers popularity, and the scarcity of issues he penciled (8, compared with 100 FF books for example) I always felt these should cost more.

  3. Great thread. I used to think I would be strong, but then a grail-ish piece from my childhood showed up for sale from "Seller/Dealer/Website X"

It was bad. I held out for a long while. But it was one of those stupid scenarios where they raised the price a couple times after it didn't sell. In the end I swallowed my pride and paid up. It was during the pandemic surge and I didn't want the price to get raised even higher!

So many great story arcs. Issues #111-113, then the Savage Land, Hellfire Club, The Wendigo, Days of Futures Past and then it lost steam until JRJr took it over.

Don't forget the first appearance of Alpha Flight!

And while I wasn't a huge fan of the Proteus storyline, friends (along with the Artist Edition) have been able to convince me that those issues are the actual artistic peak of the run.

That was fun, looking forward to the next post auction review. The fact that there was virtually no final auction day activity on the X-Men # 137 piece did seem odd. I have no idea what the proper market values should be on any of these pieces because in the past 3-4 years everything has increased exponentially. I remember not too long when a great action page from issue #113 went for (at the time was a considered to be an aggressive price) $35Kish but now I’m sure it could fetch considerably more. Personally the Byrne Cap piece was my sentimental favourite and I didn’t think that the 137 was overly exciting (just my personal tastes). IMO they are many more desirable pages from Byrne’s run that gets my juices flowing.

Nobody asked, but I'll weigh in:

    • Did ANY of the Byrne X-Men pages get live bids? Maybe the 2nd page got one? It seems like all three were "price discovered" before the auction. I don't think Rob posted any wins to Facebook. Could be a factor.
    • I'd take the 137 cover over the 141 cover. 141 cover is better drawn, but doesn't give me chills the way 137 does.
    • When I started collecting (early 2000s) here was a small mini-cabal of Byrne collectors who tried to convince the world that DoFP was equal or superior to the Dark Phoenix Saga... I never bought what they were selling.
    • I LOVED the 137 page from this auction. Was 100% as good as it gets without being some key very specific A+ moment. (maybe this is why the DD181 went so high... no DD or Elektra, but very memorable scene)

As prices for Bolland finished artwork continues to climb beyond many collectors budgets, it’s only a matter of time before we see his prelim artwork cracking the $10K barrier constantly.  I’m thinking about Killing Joke prelims in particular, but some of his other cover prelims aren’t that far off, IMHO

What's the story with his Killing Joke Prelims?

And by that I mean specifically, did Brian do multiple prelims per page for that story?  (I've seen a bunch over the years each flushed out at very different levels of detail.)

  7. I have to admit, I was skeptical about this show given the price and airfare/hotel required.... but it looks like it's shaping up pretty well.

I think East Coast in January was the way to go. Collectors eager for a break from winter?

Fairly high res scans with close up view of the art are publicly available on the HA website.  What difference would it make if HA distributed scans?

It may seem like it on this board, but not everyone in this hobby pays attention to Hertiage.

Also, I know not all items are archived on Heritage forever. Not sure how it goes down, but there are auctions I bid on which no longer show up in a search or in my bidding archives.

I think IF they took the extra step to provide 600 dpi scans of art to 3rd parties, that should ONLY be done with the new owners permission.

I don't know of an auction house that does provide high res scans to 3rd parties, so my question was purely a hypothical question.

This is interesting because as we all know, possession of the OA does not grant reproduction rights.

There are many collectors who like for their stuff to be as hidden as possible, beginning the moment they win the piece...
I can imagine these types would not want HA distributing scans, and thus I can imagine HA not wanting to irk their customers.

Legally though? If Scott has the rights to do the book, does it matter which of the five previous owners the scan came from? Probably not.

This auction is being manipulated or I'll eat my hat... the heavy hand of Heritage at work to protect a friend

    Maybe... maybe not.

On one hand, we all know people utilize friends to win their own pieces back when things aren't going as planned.

On the other hand, we're so used to "price discovery" in OA auctions that we get surprised when people actually wait until the last day to put their bid in. In many other collectibles areas, people don't jack things up the first 24 hours of the auction.
