Los Bros with no prices noted of course... Does any other collectibles field put up with this? I've been to scores of art shows, antiques shows, baseball card shows, etc over decades and have never seen a dealer who does not post prices. It is worse than unprofessional, it is abject cowardice... what a stain on this hobby to have those two so heavily involved.

At shows they have prices on pretty much everything.

It's helpful to remember that at the time MIller and Varley were doing DKR it was still just a comic that needed doing, on deadline, in a fashion that would get the results they wanted.

    Eh, I don’t think so.

It was a huge deal that DC had “stolen” Frank from Marvel. Frank had turned a character on the verge of cancellation (DD) into a comic that was outselling Spider-Man, and DC had very high expectations.

They’d already began pushing the boundaries with high end printing, coloring and expensive glossy papers with Ronin, but the sales somewhat underwhelmed. To DC’s credit, they had faith in Miller and decided to double down. This was the first ever prestige format comic. They gave Frank tons of creative freedom with an “A” list character. They were absolutely swinging for the fences with this Batman project. (and it worked.)

Apparently, ComicConnect has pulled the Comics Interview #31 Frank Miller Dark Knight cover (planned for Auction #50) likely as a result of the DKR1 consignment....consignor has one of two thoughts:

    (A)  Yikes, no way I'm competing with that!  Two DKR covers is too many for June.

    or

    (B)  Wait for Heritage's record-breaking sale...then ride the wave in September.

They pulled the Ronin cover as well.

So I’ve fairly ignorant when it comes to original art…..

Is there much early Dikto Amazing Spider-Man OA in existence? For example I always think about those Sinister Six splashes from the first Amazing Spider-Man annual. Do they exist? Is their ownership known?

There is a lot out there in existence. Including this:

Of course, I've never even contemplated buying a McFarlane in my life, so what do I know?

I would love to hear more about this.

You always stuck mainly to vintage art?
You already had pieces of his you got from work collaboration(s)?
    Competitive rivalry?
    Hate his anatomy?
    Hate his accent?

I just imagined that for at least a short while, the Image founders were like football teammates...high-fiving, hanging out together, partying and jamming, trading and drawing in each others' sketchbooks, drink and draws, etc...

I have no problem with people using $300k, $500k, $750k, or whatever as their guess.

But none of us should really be using $657k, given all the extraordinarily specific and subjective reasons behind that sale and that number, as a sales comp for the greater McFarlane market....both then and now.

To analogize to the real estate market. If a company needs to buy a specific parcel of land, for very subjective reasons, and in a specific location and pays double, triple, quadruple what any other comparable parcel has sold for in that geographic area or in that near term, it is considered an outlier to be distinguished and not relied upon as true FMV when valuing other parcels that do not have those subjective and individual reasons that lead to the outsized and incongruous final cost on the outlier sale.

When there are specific and known reasons for a sale that seems bananas high to the outside world it makes sense to note them and leave that sale to the side as a comparable.

Still, this cover can and likely will sell for gigantic money. What happened with the ASM 328 being an interesting anecdote in art sales history but clearly not a logical comp. to anything that came before that sale or since.

So are you guessing over or under 657?  :)

That said, he WAS capable of doing very solid professional work, which makes it sad that the majority of his career would be spent being nothing more than a publisher friendly hack.

    Ouch!
Yes, there are some really great Thor pages Vince inked... Unfortunately were are only 3-4 of these per issue.
