I can say with 100% certainty that the consignor is no one important.  :)  At least as far as Heritage or the market is concerned.

I don't think it's more cover-worthy than the GI Joe cover.  But it is a really nice cover from a significant run, and an image a major character that's really striking by a well-known artist.  So it wasn't a bad choice, necessarily.

I always thought it was a little weird when they put painted pieces on the covers of their OA catalogues. I think a big part of the allure of originals is the way they distinguish themselves from the actual comics by, you know, being uncolored except for the yellow coffee stains.

When they use a painted cover it just screams "OA" a little less loudly.

It's been said that art and beauty are in the eye of the beholder. I think that qualifies in our little hobby too. Convincing wealthy people that something used for a comic book is worth a lot of money.  Doesn't that sound like the hobby? Don't the same rules apply?

Think I'm wrong?  Show a friend of the family - a civilian, a non collector - your "best" piece (however you define best).  And, then ask them how much they would pay for it.

I don't know if this story is related or not, but I brought a half-dozen pieces with me back home to Nebraska over the holiday break to show a few friends from my old Local Comic Shop.... There was zero interest. A Neal Adams, an Art Adams, a Mignola.... nobody glanced at any of them for longer than two seconds. They were too busy talking about some variant cover that'd come out a couple weeks prior which was already on the store wall priced at $40 bucks.

As of now... $125,000 ($150,000 with bp) with 16 bidders (39 bids + phone bidders)... Wow.

I assume serious bidders will be camping out for the live auction, no matter what.  I would never be in contention for anything like this with those bid increments.  In general, at these "heights", what is the point in placing bids now ?  Is the goal to scare off as many people as possible as soon as possible ?

Not always true. Sometimes the seller will shill it up to their "reserve" early and hope someone bites, not expecting their bid to remain high bid.
(Full disclosure: I have been that sucker before)

  4. I haven't sold on eBay in a couple years. Can someone help me with changes/rumors I think I've heard?

    1. If I sell a $2,000 item, do I need to file it in my taxes?

    2. They don't take PayPal anymore, right?

    3. What's the current "cut" they will take? (estimate is OK)

Anything else to be aware of?

Thanks in advance for the help.

  5. So I'm at the GraphicCollectibles booth in Comic-Con one year, and Mitch has a John Byrne Legends Cover for sale. It's like $1,000. I love Byrne, he's one of the 3 guys I consider myself to "collect" and I really only mostly had panel pages from him. I gladly fork over the cash.

Fast-forward a few short months. I'm not crazy about the way the heads on the cover aren't fully rendered, but rather ghostlike outlines, and hey, I'm more of a Marvel guy anyway. Something else comes up I want, so I put the Byrne cover on eBay.... $2,000 bucks!! Cha-CHING!!

    Great flip, right? WRONG.

Turns out the cover was the cover to Legends #3, which is the first appearance of Suicide Squad. Sure enough a couple years later they announce they're doing a movie on that team and... well, let's just say win some, lose some. In this case on the same deal.
