It's not the norm but I believe best offers have the same amount of time to pay as auctions...something like 15 days.

Weird, I remember posting something earlier in this thread about this. Found:

What happens if your offer is accepted

If the seller accepts your offer, the item is reserved for you at the agreed upon price. Please visit your shopping cart and go through checkout to complete your purchase of the item within 7 days. If you have still not placed your order 7 days after your offer was accepted, your offer will be canceled and you will lose the ability to make offers on other items.

I also have learned not to be afraid of putting books into auction (after a few discounts) if I truly believe that lack of visibility is the only thing keeping it from selling.

    Welcome! 🥳

There's definitely a point at which it makes more sense to toss certain items into a weekly, but those auctions are essentially bargain bins. I don't believe weekly results represent any kind of true market value, which is much better represented by curated auctions. Buyers attend Prime-type auctions with a plan to fight for items they want, whereas buyers drop by the weeklies to see which prices they'd be foolish to pass up.

What action was actually performed here and can it only succeed when no bleed-through is present? Thanks,

and very little in the way of any deals.

Catching whatever great deal on the inventory that wouldn't move at the home office always yielded some of my most memorable finds, especially from dealers far from the convention city

In 2010, I attempted to deconstruct or "reverse engineer" CGC's proprietary (and still unpublished) grading rubric.  I think I got very close

CGC’s grading and/or slab labeling standards have changed (and will no doubt continue to evolve) with time :foryou:

Fantastic work! Because I was searching for some kind of current consensus I did pass up that sticky because of the date being 2010, but thank you for telling me about it now, it is thorough and helpful.

However, we all know that CGC isn't Overstreet and where the tape is located and what purpose it serves will in part determine a book's grade. Is it repairing a spine split or tear? Is it holding on a detached cover? It the tape on the centerfold? Has it been removed and only tape residue remains?

I've seen books ranging from 4.5-8.5 depending on how these tape questions are answered by the flaws present. 4.5 is a prevalent CGC grade for books with tape though.

But the question was "on an otherwise perfect comic." Let me do some digging and I'll get back to everyone.

Oh, no need to go all out, these answers have been satisfactory, thank you to everyone!

can rule out the presser having caused this?

I don't know if anything can be ruled out since so many people handle the book during the process and with such different levels of care. I think we would need to see OP's book to make a better assessment.

How was the page quality, did you open and close the front page before sending?

This is the question for sure. I'm not making any judgment about OP's ability, just want to state that some people consider a detailed look at a cover through a bag and board to be a detailed examination. I imagine that a number of collectors buying vintage books have never removed tape from plastic let alone touched newsprint.

  7. Hi everyone, thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.

I'm hoping to get educated on current estimates for maximum Universal grade in the following "otherwise, perfect!" situations:

    -Missing one staple, not manufacturing

    -Cover detached at one staple

    -Cover detached

    -Centerfold detached at one staple

    -Centerfold detached

-Tape present (when not considered restorative)

I appreciate you taking the time!

It seems like the only ones going mostly, are locals. Was attendance on the decline pre covid?

I imagine it depends on who's attendance you count.

Cons have become more like a destination carnival/spectacle for the average attendee, with the primary cost justification being whether there's a celebrity they want to see for a fee or possibly the idea of breathing the same air for free. The demographic is younger and the dressing up part has become a key element of the fun, sort of like a ren fair. The target audience barely knows that newsprint comic books exist, let alone have any interest in acquiring them. For those that are adults, comics aren't necessarily part of the nostalgia they're trying to satisfy, with video games and toys possibly resonating instead.

Since comic book back issues are no longer the feature, there is less reason for vendors to pay exorbitant fees to set up, and those that do setup are buying less space. This is understandable if most people are primarily looking to buy pops and non-collectible merchandise.

For back-issue collectors who may have been drawn by their own celebrities apart from the previously large selection of back issues, most of the staple creator attendees have died and their significance can never be replaced. Berni, Neal, George Perez off the top of my head. The remaining vintage talent is usually less than legendary, and even those who are legendary lose their novelty quickly; Steranko's Warhol-countenance eventually loses it's surprise value. Oh, and boomers, with heavy nostalgia for silver age comics, are also dying.

With everything working against collector attendance, the only ones who can justify a ticket are likely local.

  9. Unfortunately you can't argue the grade. The idea is that it's impartial, so what someone wants isn't considered. If you want to resubmit there are ways to try and help the grade up before you do, but it costs money and time and your comic book would have to have certain problems that the procedure could successfully address.

I'm curious of your situation...your expectations and then the results. Can you share the story and post pics from before and after?

This is not the first time I am just so sick of the no recourse position we are in.

Yeah, and it looks like they are supposed to notify you (as well as not be held responsible whether you use a screen or not...)

    from the CCS FAQ:

"Is it possible my comic will receive a lower grade after pressing?"

If damage ever occurs during pressing, the customer will be notified of the damage prior to the book transferring to CGC for grading.

    ...and...

To mitigate the possibility of damage, it is recommended that each book is examined for these defects prior to submission. When in doubt, the CCS screening service should be utilized to assess safety.

Because it is impossible to ensure that damage will not occur, CCS will not be held liable for split spines, covers or pages detached from staples, or detached pieces.

and there are no reprints like this that I could find

I'm not familiar with foreign editions, but I'm confident that all of the American reprints have some kind of alteration to the dress, possibly to highlight that it's a reprint? GRR is missing the whole price circle for example, Previews shows the upcoming 9/2022 reprint with a modern Marvel logotype added near bottom left:

What’s different about the back cover the op posted vs. the original in the image below?  (shrug)

"This cover has no red ink on the back (see "spray" card in suitcase, boy's shirt, the orange text in general)
The blue shade on the back is anachronistic."

Others have noted that the size of the ad is different, in particular that the original ad didn't take up the whole page like the Famous Artist Schools Studio ad below that has a tighter margin at the top and bottom. The facsimile isn't exactly like that but it's closer to one than the original.
