Cap #1 CGC 4.0 on Comic Link:
With a 0.5 missing 4 wraps going for $39,500 and a 2.5 going for $86,000 you’ve got to think this will easily eclipse $100,000.
Predictions?
Up to 95K with 4+ days left and hasn’t even cracked the reserve.
Has Cap #1 reclaimed its spot as the No. 1 Marvel comic in our hobby?

Hi friends,
Wondering if some experts on golden age stories can help me. I always remembered that George Maxon was the original Red Skull and in later decades it was resolved that Johann Schmidt was actually the real Red Skull all these years in classic retroactive continuity. Looking around the internet and even some professional publications now cite Johann's first appearance as Cap #7 from 1941. Being the wannabe comic historian, I dutifully purchased a Masterworks to read Cap #7 from 1941 and was surprised when nothing of note happens in the issue that would lead us to believe this is a different Red Skull. CGC also makes no mention of this issue as a first appearance.
I'm wondering where this information came from that Cap #7 from 1941 is some seminal issue. Please be specific with issues where Johann's name is first revealed.
Thanks for your help!
Rich
George Maxon was the original Red Skull, 1st appearing in Cap #1 and again in Cap #3. I’ve not yet read Cap #7, but he “apparently” meets his demise at the end of Cap #3.
My guess, and it’s just a guess, is that if they wrote off Maxon and brought back a “new” Red Skull, the later development of Schmidt was simply attributed to the Red Skull from Cap #7.
Similar to attributing Joe Chill to the character depicted in Tec #33.
Or, if you wanted to go there, attributing the origin of the Joker to being Alfred Stryker in Tec #27 (as seen in the new 52).

I feel so bad for you man...it was definitely stolen, but only a not very intelligent person would crack it out of the slab....CGC has a serial number for it...unfortunately not all people use the registry....
May I ask
Have you been collecting much since the heartbreak?
I hope so...
I have been. But this haunts me every day as a collector. I keep dreaming about it being recovered—but until that happens, I have these get-wrenching knots in my stomach.

Did you ever get made whole at least for the most package? I have seen some single pages but never your exact one. I have been checking every time I see one.

A year or two ago that exact Tec 27 back cover was graded by itself and for sale on eBay for $10K best offer. Not sure if it sold though. This has no bearing on the conversation but just pointing it out haha.
I own the BC, which is why I’m interested in the imprint.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if any of you with photographic GA memory could help me solve this mystery.
This copy of Detective Comics #27 suffered what appears to be water damage, leaving the imprint of other comics on both the front and back cover.
I’ve flipped the images of the Detective Comics #27 to match up with the other comics once in contact with this one.
I’m pretty confident, based on the “95” and “WITH” on the front cover, that it’s the imprint of a Detective Comics #28 or Action Comics #13 back cover. I’ve attached an image of a Detective Comics #28 back cover for comparison.
The imprint on the back cover has been tougher for me to match. One would assume it to be the imprint of another comic book front cover, but it may not be.
Attached are flipped scans for reference.
Any ideas?

Here's a moderately restored lower grade copy going in C-link's summer featured auction. Where would a copy like this finish? Over $30K, $40K? https://www.comiclink.com/auctions/item.asp?back=%2FAUCTIONS%2FPREVIEW.ASP%3Fcode%3D2020aug%23Item_1410943&id=1410943&itemType=0
I’m not as familiar with restored copy value. This is a nice book though.

Big congrats on picking up one of the greatest books in our hobby. The Action Comics #1 story continued. Easily the best of the non-Superman Action covers too.

How is this not getting more press?
My goodness.

Every retailer would have their own "codes" to identify arrival dates for record keeping. Typically, we see "R" then the date, which probably meant "received." Perhaps "Y" meant "year" in this case but was not specified in the type? Numerical codes (call back numbers), such as "73" for More Fun Comics on the Larsons, were more significant as they marked codes for retailers to re-order that particular title.
Thanks for the feedback!
Do you have any scans of similar stamps, other codes, etc.?
I’m interested in learning more about these things.

Captain America Comics #1 Club
in Golden Age Comic Books
Posted
It’s flip-flopped over the years.
I suspect Marvel #1 would be the choice for many collectors, understandably so. Birth of the DC Universe vs. Birth of the Marvel Universe.
But in the long-run, I do think it will go back to Cap #1, if it hasn’t already.
