  1. One of the problems I have is pulling the trigger on something today when Heritage keeps rolling out good pieces in later actions. With so much art coming to market right now and less money to spend due to inflation (speaking personally), I'm passing up pages I would have purchased three years ago in favor of building cash for better ones.
  2. I think $95 for solid Chen/Kryssing art (Tangent Doom Patrol 1) counts as a Morlock blue light special
  3. That is not true at all. When I browsed the racks in the early 80s, I was confronted with a wide variety of very distinctive styles by artists such as Byrne, Art Adams, Aparo, Colan, Miller, Romita Sr, Romita Jr, Perez, Sienkiewicz, Sal Buscema, and Walt Simonson on monthly titles -- all artists whose work was instantly recognizable as theirs alone. You hated or loved artists at that time because their art made you care. I'm open to new art (neglected to mentioned I like Bilquis, who seems to have a good future), but right now most of what I see is a lot of bland, corporate art which doesn't induce me to plunk down my $4.
  4. 15K? Clean page, Williamson inks, rare full splash of Rachel, decent (but tragic) story, and JR JR's art has an understated Sienkiewicz influence (the New Mutants run predated this by 2 years)
  5. Went to my LCS yesterday to check a newer artist whose work I am considering buying, then decided to browse about 40 other books. Wow, is there a lot of bland, derivative gaming-type art out there right now, most of it some bastardized mix of watered down Jim Lee, manga and overdone digital effects. The last part is the most insidious; it's as if the artists are no longer trying to pencil complex expressions, but relying entirely on digital effects to fill the gap. The result is flattish and inhuman, akin to characters rendered in a video game -- which probably isn't a surprise, given every 30-something or younger creator was fed a steady diet of games in his or her youth. Whatever it is, it isn't pretty. There are some unique talents out there -- I love Mike Perkins recent work on Swamp Thing, Marcio Takara's delicate lines on Poison Ivy, and Tradd Moore anything. The Dodsons still put out a look of beautiful art, too. But there is an awful lot of drek to contend with, sadly.
  6. Cmon.... this variant cover was barely a con sketch... and if you can explain what it is, than good luck
  7. See, this is where people are victims of lower expectations. I worked in NYC for almost 9 years, and all of them under Mayor Bloomberg. Despite carrying a gun, neither myself nor anyone I worked with ever encountered street crime in downtown Manhattan the entire time. Homelessness was dealt with by making sure individuals were placed in shelters where they were provided help and food -- and if they wanted to stay on the streets, there was zero tolerance for public defecation, aggressive behavior and camping on public property. NYC was literally one of the safest and nicest cities in the US at that time, period. It was simply a matter of will, and by God I enjoyed every day of it while I was there. You should demand better from your folks in charge -- better isn't impossible.
  8. The new DCU will feature The Authority... dealers, start your price increases!! From global fame to relative obscurity, “Superman: Legacy” will lead directly into “The Authority,” an ensemble movie about superhumans who have a less-than-idealistic approach to saving the world. Gunn spoke at some length about “The Authority,” a project he said he’s “really excited” to bring to life. The characters come from Wildstorm, which was launched in 1992 as an independent entity under current DC Comics chief Jim Lee and ultimately made an imprint of DC.
  9. At the NJ con last summer, I got a good look at a lot of our fellow collectors. Let's just say the vast majority are not as young or as fit as you are, Mike, and thus might not be able to outrun your average axe-wielding maniac while toting a Mountain Dew and a 14x17 Itoya
  10. It may be useful to add some historical context here. Picasso's paintings from the early aughts and teens were sold for $1,000 or less. The average salary in Germany in 1938, when this painting was sold, was $6,000. If this painting was sold for $1,500 as claimed, that would have represented a substantial amount of money at the time. While I will never argue that forced selling of assets to save your own life is fair, an argument can be made that the price they realized at the time was. On a side note, Picasso's own dealer in Paris (who was his neighbor and later lifelong friend) was Jewish and forced to flee. He had the foresight to transfer some of his art to the US, however, before the Nazis occupied France.
  11. As a former law enforcement officer I would advise no one to go to downtown Seattle right now. The area where the convention center sits is unsafe; Nike just closed its flagship store one block away due to crime. If that's not enough to persuade you, view the video here by a Seattle journalist:
  12. I've noticed Heritage uses a tiered system of packing security for art, i.e. there is a noticeable difference in packing quality when buying over 10K... perhaps a larger $ purchase of comics would result in a more secure package
  13. Good Lord I hope not... only X artist to ever render her ugly
  14. Personally holding dry powder for the better pages of 184 as they surface over the coming months... looks like the whole issue was consigned to CLink
  15. Boring? Batman's oddly separated and weirdly angled index finger? The Bat knee pads? Batman's calf being the same width as his head? The trying-to-be-Kirby-creative-but-failing interior design? I could go on and on...
  16. Sal B and Sinnott Hulk 277 page goes for $11,400 w/BP... great full transformation panel up top, thought I might have a chance at 7500... nope 😆
  17. Wow, Kirby was very weak... FF page went at expectation but the rest (all DC) were a disappointment
  18. We'll see... every indicator I follow (I day trade) is telling me 2023 will be deflationary... will be interesting to see what happens to collectibles
