  1. Inflation of everything else is not helping... eggs and bread doubled since covid, I can't remember the last time I bought a beef roast, the guys I work with on my house are charging 10% more than last year, some local restaurants are adding an "inflation surcharge" to the bill now... it never stops these days
  2. You both owe me a beer for choosing to replace all my windows right now as opposed to buying more art ... would have easily bid on both pages
  3. Butch's Instagram post today about a Simonson cover included a comment I have been thinking about for years: "I feel like we as an industry lost some of the magic when publishers shifted most covers from being story focused into a character strike a pose thing." Smart man...
  4. A nice assortment of art ending tomorrow... Zeck Secret Wars, Lee Wildcats, a nice mix of X pages by various artists, a BWS X-O Manowar 4 cover, plus the big magilla: Kirby's Incredible Hulk 3 pg 1 splash, currently at the low, low, low price of $270,000 Leaving aside the Hulk page, I see a lot of desirable art in the sub 5K space right now... been a while since CLink made bidding this difficult for me
  5. Ah... and I thought it was just a female repellent bracelet
  6. Someone pls explain what is going on with the guy with the wrist device
  7. Theoretically... but with prices as high as they are, the return on investment worry now creeps into my purchase decisions. I am no Warren Buffet or Bernard Arnault
  8. The panel just spoke to me, it was beautiful while conveying a lot of pathos. Sometimes the stars just align and artists tap into the same magic which made Greek art the envy of the world... The ancient world knew how to combine beauty and emotion on a sublime level, but it is rare to see in today's comics due to most artists lacking classical training and life drawing skills.
  9. When I was a kid, I used to buy comics which had amazing covers -- regardless of the art or story inside (Gil Kane covers got me every time). Yesterday, I found myself buying a page because of a single panel I just couldn't stop staring at for two weeks. I thought my art purchases would be more rational as I got older, but it is going the other way! For those who can separate their emotions from art collecting, I have a lot of respect for you...
  10. LOL it was fun... took me about 20 minutes.... once I worked thru Ebay searches of "X-Men childrens book," "X-Men coloring book" and "X-Men animated series book" from 1995-1997, I ran a search on "X-Men childrens magazine" starting with 1995. I'm just lucky that one seller (my FOUND IT is hyperlinked to the auction) decided to flip the book and post the Beast page... it was all luck at the end!
  11. Based on the simplistic style, the repeated Xs, the sans serif font and the exclamation point, I would say this was from a children's book -- one for 6-10 year olds and meant as an intro to the X-Men. Marvel put out a ton of X related non-comics material for kids in the mid 90s (to include a book with an attached cassette tape!). I'd search for 1995 and above materials... art/content is usually done at least a year prior to the publishing date in the book world. EDIT: FOUND IT! It is from the Feb 1995 issue of Disney Adventures magazine, Vol 5 #4. BTW I don't own this... am just darn good at research
  12. Not a high $ flip, but still a 400% profit... lot of 2 Sienkiewicz prelims sold on Heritage last September for $480... 1 of those flipped on DD last week for $1100 (this was the actual sale during the show)... congrats to Mike
  13. Rationalizing poor business practices with a "they are actually museums" argument is quite a feat
  14. Looking for any Hulk Trimpe pages featuring the Sandman... cash paid!
  15. We all know there is a value rating assigned to every page of a comic, so when you see pages on sale together you naturally rank them accordingly. However, just seeing one of those pages alone forces you to consider it on its own merits... and when you add in the appeal of scarcity/last one left, it often makes the page more appealing. It's basic psychology I wish more dealers would understand...
  16. One other thing... when you place available art next to sold art, you are automatically competing with your own product... many times I have been mentally stuck on "that sold page is better than the available page I like" and decided not to buy... can't imagine I am the only one who runs into this issue
  17. This is probably an old horse to beat, but why are (some) dealers leaving thousands of sold pages on their sites? I want to browse and buy, but scrolling thru dozens of sold pages in search of sometimes a single (!) available page is brutal and kills my enthusiasm to buy. Maybe there is some magical sales advantage to torturing your customers with all of these unavailable pages? If so, it isn't working with me...
  18. The reason comics showed a lot crime in NY during those years was because there WAS a lot of crime in NY at that time -- six murders a day, on average, a rate 5x higher than now. The thing to remember is criminals don't care about your politics. An axe is an axe. The guy with the hammer who murdered someone in broad daylight downtown? That story is fascinating... police were running a surveillance on an undercover drug deal that day, noted the hammer guy and actually called in a marked unit. Unfortunately, hammer guy killed his victim before that unit could arrive. If the police aren't quick enough to respond to that, what do you think is going to happen to you when you dial 911? Facts matter. Seattle is down a sizable number of officers. Seattle is allowing open encampment of homeless downtown. Seattle operates a needle exchange location right near the convention center. Further, I know from experience many homeless suffer from untreated mental illness and alcohol/drug addiction. They can often be violent because they need to protect themselves from other homeless. If these are facts you are comfortable with, than by all means go.
  19. Today I came across an auction for a modern page of inks over blue lines. The original page had no word balloons or sound effects, as they were later added digitally. The seller of this page, however, had printed out the word balloons and sound effects and physically attached them to the page in a facsimile of the published page. I give the seller credit, he admitted it. But what do you call OA which is "enhanced" in this manner? Is it still OA? I've heard of amateur inking touch-ups and adding missing stats, but this is something else altogether.
  20. Was just reminded yesterday the NJ Comic Art Con is March 12th (a Sunday)... link with info here. The location has changed this year, per the site. I'm not sure why they do so little marketing for this... Joe is aware of this board and CAF.
  21. Argumentum ergo decedo, confessional writing, or a mix? A tough question, that.
  22. I went to the shop to browse with the intention of finding new artists whose work I could buy precisely because I am not wedded to the art of my youth. I never said a lot of newer work was boring or cr*p -- I find it competent, albeit not very beautiful, too derivative of Lee's work/manga, and rendered with an overreliance on digital effects. I should note I mostly browsed the major publisher titles and came to my conclusion. Is there wonderful art being produced by Very Minor Publisher X on an erratic basis? I am sure there is, but the question becomes, Is it worth buying obscure comic art not connected to a major publisher or character? For me, the answer is no.
