  1. Wow, some crackers here lately Marty! I really like the Shadow and Spirit comics. I bought a Doll Man quarterly recently for the war bonds cover, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the artwork inside was.
  2. Wow Marty, the colors have certainly held up well in your collection!
  3. Great books Lotemo and Bill. That one might well make my next 'top ten wants' list. Bill: if you bring it to Australia, it risks getting impounded.
  4. Agreed - I cracked that one out to read it, but in the end wished I'd left it in the slab. I'd read the Bud Mahurin story in an Aircraft of the Aces book, so that didn't help.
  5. I bought a couple of WDC&S in last week's Heritage auction. Hopefully presentable mid grades - but the prices were good. .
  6. My favourite Barks story is the ten pager in WDC&S #126 - the one where Scrooge's money is picked up by a tornado and distributed across the country. It's just a lovely parable. My favourite long story is probably ... actually, I don't know how to finish that sentence! So many great ones.
  7. Couldn't resist these in a recent sales thread.
  8. Hands up anyone who will buy from this guy again on the boards? Anyone? Bueller? Thought so.
  9. I might have missed this, but how many books do you have? I think my childhood collection (long gone, alas) was about 400.
  10. I've posted these in the Australian GA thread, but since no one actually reads that, I thought I'd share them here. Here's a beautiful 1942 Sunday comics adaptation of an Australian aboriginal dreamtime legend by Mary and Elizabeth Durack. Elizabeth was a well known artist in her own right, Here's a Hal Foster inspired (I'm guessing) strip from 1941. The sabre-tooth tigers are awesome. This one I'd have called a Barks knock off (artwise - the gag is lame), except that it dates from 1942!
  11. Almost done with this short run. My first Gaines copy. (My scanner doesn't like slabs)
  12. Thanks everyone! You know until yesterday I didn't have a clear idea of where I stood with Fiction House but turns out what you see is about 40% of everything they published It took me about 10 years? That means essentially a steady slow pace of simply 3 books a month and you get there. The tortoise approach as I call it. I am working on completing three of the Big 6 runs: Fight, Rangers and Wings. I'd love to complete Planet but it's not $$ realistic at this point. Jungles and Jumbos, I am only interested in part of each run. The rest, I have some of the minor runs complete: Indians, Long Bow, Toyland; close on Kaanga, would like to do Cowgirl Romance & Firehair. Not much into Sheena or Wambi and should get back into Ghost. Sorry went on too long. No need to apologise Scrooge - your collection is wonderful. Free range comics that can actually be read are great things.
  13. +1 on both counts. You have a great collection Marty.
  14. I'll chip in Marty - the one you posted comes after Donald Duck in Volcano Valley and the second Albert and Pogo book. Not a bad start for a 'sweet spot'!
  15. My wife told me to buy this one. I'm nothing if not obedient. The aviation nerd in me wonders why the artist chose the very obscure Hawker Tornado, of which only four were built between 1939 and 1941, as the hardware for the cover of this 1947 comic. .
  16. The question I have is why are there so many #9's? We'll probably never know. My theory is that it's the quality of the story. I find 9 unreadable, but 29 and 62 hold up to repeated readings. So those issues got trashed more. Or maybe there were more 9s to start with - I assume the print figures are long lost?
  17. Thanks for the kind words. that one is out of a 8.0 PLOD slab (SP - staple reinforced at cover and cf) but it's a beaut alright. I'm wondering what the consensus is on the tougher Barks FC issues. I see more nice copies of 108 than 147, which backs up your comment. I think that 29 and 62 are both tougher than 9 (which seems surprising). Any other hard issues? I can't find the right copy of 238, but had no trouble with the other post 200 issues.
  18. Not a comic room, but a converted wardrobe in my mancave. Take out all of the wardroby stuff, add some DIY shelves, and voila! I'm working through selling off anything bronze or later, and my entire collection now sits comfortably in this space (and will from now on). The display is something I'll rotate through. The wardrobe doors keep unwanted light off the the comics on display. Not a bad Saturday afternoon's work.
  19. Shipping - I 'bank' wins at Heritage and get them sent when I have five invoices worth. In this case saved me around $150 compared to getting them sent individually.
  20. Here's a nicer looking copy of this book than I thought I'd own.
  21. Not my personal artwork, but something my daughter did for my birthday. Reproducksion of a Barks oil painting (Acrylic on board). The flash washed it out a bit because the colours are strong in real life. Now to find a nice frame...
  22. That Pep 22 is a killer. My latest is also GA (barely).
  23. Love this one. I saw the original Picasso ('Girl Before a Mirror') in the MOMA a few weeks ago, which made this book irresistable. Must have been quite striking on the newstand!
