extremely well done drawing of the sun's heat !! i feel dehydrated just looking at this cover !!
A lot of the effect is the colouring. If you look closely, the only line art is the man and the boat - everything else is due to the colourist, Marie Severin.

The bacon looks juicier than on the US cover.
You had to ham it up, didn't you?

Yes, gotta love the early CC issues. I'd like to find a better one, but finding any copy is a win!

Colors are great. Sweet copy!
You have a good eye Jon. This is one of the nicest Australian FH copies I've found. The cover inks still have different reflectivities.

looks even better than 9.2 !!
Yeah, I agree. But it's in a slab so I can't check the interior. I suspect there's some tanning of the interior cover - quite common on Dell file copies.

a goody from the land down under
Cover art almost certainly by New Zealand born Maurice Bramley.

I dunno, I'd be going after the redhead who looks like Maureen O'Hara too!

not exactly great artwork on this cover but that is some of the raw beauty of comic books
Probably an expanded version of a story panel, which happened sometimes on Australian books.

Not entirely sure what the US planes are meant to be, though they have a bit of the B-52 about them. The bad guys are the usual Fiction House "mystery Soviet fighter" - I wrote about this in my 'comic notebook' thread.

Great cover !! did you hear they just found two of the four carriers lost at Midway
Yes, I saw that. The Kaga and Akagi. Midway is an excellent case study in intelligence work and carrier battle tactics.

Walt Kelly liked this idea so much he did it four times! See also Pogo Possum #11, WDC&S #39 and 76.

a rarely seen "Rhino" cover !!!
I think there are a few of those, but I'd have to check.

Me too - the perfect low grade book. Enough wear to be very affordable but still with heaps of eye appeal. In fact, for some of these old books the general wear adds to the charm. This one's a great read too. Lots of Gottfredson Mouse.

I think this is a near reprint of Blue Beetle #25. Here's what the GCD says:
NotesThere are no indications on the item as to its publisher. We formerly listed this title under Fox, following Howard Keltner's Golden Age Comic Books Index, but GCD scholars agree it was much more likely produced by Holyoke right at about the time Holyoke lost the rights to the Blue Beetle to Fox.
The notion that this was produced for use as a savings bond premium appears to originate with The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, and is also disputed by GCD experts. -

How are you adding raw books to the Gallery? I thought they had to be CGC books only?
No, you can post pretty much anything as far as I can tell. There is a CGC curated gallery that has only slabbed books, but personal galleries can be raw.
-
Yes it does. The Extra! covers were quite good - in fact probably the best thing about a mostly lackluster comic.

Put it up for auction tonight and let's set the market price.
I would, but it's in a box marked 'keepers', so my hands are tied.

i know this is a major US key !! how does the Aussie version price out
No idea. This is the only one I've ever seen and none of the Australian comic archive sites had it. So sales data = what I paid for this one. I have been offered (and declined) a lot more than that for it though...

Quite a haul of sharp Scrooges, good sir. Nice!
My first dip into serious collecting was the run of Barks Uncle Scrooge. My first and greatest love in comics.

No, but the shrinks in these stories don't behave like real practitioners in other ways. They are quite interventionist and forthright rather than gentle guides to self awareness. But there's no sinister behaviour.
