  1. According to CGC........ Cockling is caused by an excessive amount of heat or humidity applied during pressing. Cockling occurs on the front and / or back cover of an improperly pressed book, giving the appearance of waves throughout the cover. This defect is common to pressed books — either in an isolated area of the cover or over the entire cover — and it occurs when an excessive amount of heat or humidity is applied during pressing. Signs of cockling may not become apparent until some time has passed after pressing. Cockling can be corrected nearly 100% of the time with a proper pressing.
  2. Newly graded books do not go immediately onto the serial number database. Sometimes it can take multiple weeks.
  3. I remember when you originally posted it. One of my favorites.
  4. I don't think the writing on the cover will affect this book because it's low key. The Back cover really needs to be cleaned. I think it's in the 4.0 vicinity as is.
  5. Sorry but I don't think you are getting much serious answers here. I just don't think this is a plausible question. No good answers, sorry.
  6. I'm sorry but there's no easy answer for you. I believe your are infering CBCS did not witness the signature either. A lot of value will be lost for either company you submit to.
  7. Hey Karl, I agree with you. You are also correct that there is no guarantee for an upgrade.
  8. I agree that there are benefits to leaving it in the original slab. I would only upgrade if I had plans on selling. I do think it is upgradable.
  9. Looks like an 8.5 to me but I heard CGC is currently loose, so I will say 9.0, even with those staple tears.
  10. I do think there is an upgrade available for this book. It may also be changed to White Page Quality ! Send it to CCS, in the slab. Do NOT take it out of the slab. Worst case, even if they say no, you would only be charged a minimal fee.
  11. No argument but the current example is not color touch. For this example, the book is trimmed. The owner wants to 'remove' the trim by cutting it out. I'm not even sure if that would work. I tend to doubt it.
  12. The general practice for CGC is to only list it in the notes if it affects the grade. They do not, have never, simply listed all flaws in the notes. I do agree with you that rust should be an exception and noted on the label. It would have been in the notes if it was a higher grade.
  13. I'm still baffled why we are discussing trying to hide a trim with a tear. This is okay for everyone ?
  14. Correct me if I am wrong but you are trying to fool CGC into missing the trimming by adding additional micro tears? I think CGC would still catch it, either way, but it doesn't seem like the right thing to do. The book was trimmed, no way of undoing it.
  15. If I am looking at the same location you are referencing, it looks like the crease breaks color. If so, my opinion is pressing won't help. I'm looking at something to the right of the DC label. Is that what you are referencing ?
  16. Couple thoughts. If the tape on the staples is holding the cover on, it will be a very low grade. Given there are over two inches of tears, that alone would limit it to 5.0 .
  17. I agree with you. There may be a 0.5 improvement in there but probably not worth spending the money on. Not much for pressing to help with this book.
  18. It may be in such a low grade that it won't get a restored label.
  19. I believe that some slabs may leave CGC without a ring. Depending on the temperature, pressure on the slab, something causes the rings to appear. I remember getting a new slab with rings but simply keeping it pressure free at home for a while and the rings disappeared. I agree with you and I do not like the new slabs. I much prefered the previous slabs.
  20. I agree, the problem is mostly with the latest generation slabs. I would sometimes see rings on the previous generation slabs but it was easy to stuff a piece of paper inside the slab and the ring would disappear.
  21. You really need to show us pics of the book, which you said is already slabbed. Depending on the existing grade of the book it may not be worth the effort from a financial standpoint. The book may have existing flaws that a 2nd press may not help. Sorry, but this is a tough question to answer for you. I would suggest sending it in to CCS for an evaluation, keep it in the slab. IF CCS says no, they will simply send you back the slab with a small charge of a fee.
  22. I think the only solution is to call CGC. I am sure they will take care of it if you send it back in.
  23. My opinion, leave your 2 books in the slab and submit them to CCS. Worst case, if they think there is no improvement, you will only pay a nominal fee and keep your book in the slab.
  24. I was under the assumption that a book, graded before the rule changes on tape, cannot be reholdered, it must be regraded. However, in this case, the book is very low grade already so it may not matter or be allowed for reholder only. I honestly don't know but keep in mind this is not an expensive book.
  25. I think you gave him an honest answer but it wasn't the answer he was looking for. Maybe that's why he didn't respond, even with a courtesy comment.
