Comprehensive List of DC Universe Logo UPC Variants
Bomber-Bob replied to revat's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
'Supposedly' the Green Lantern run is one of the easiest runs to get with #70 listed as the most difficult in the run. However, I got a copy, in the wild, easy enough . Here's an article about this topic............... https://comicbookinvest.com/2017/12/12/rare-not-rare-dc-universe-logo-upc-variants/ -
I think it can sometimes be a mistake to submit multiple books of the same issue. Remember, the pre screen grader is a human being so you are dealing with human traits. When you are looking at multiple copies of the same book, all in hand at once, it is only natural to feel some books are superior to the others. The tendency would be to pick out the better copies and send them along for grading while rejecting the others. You may be safe with two or three slam dunk 9.8's but the larger the multiple, the more likely a reject. It could be something as minor as alignment, less than firm staple, less than sharp corner, etc. Note, I'm not saying this is the correct procedure, I'm just saying it probably happens. It's analogous to picking out the best copy of a newly released book at your LCS, quickly scanning the pile to pick out the best one.

Should I get this pressed?
Bomber-Bob replied to danchoi03's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I'm only making this comment because you have asked similar questions on different books. A press is the application of heat and pressure, just like you would use to iron your clothes. While it can straighten out a crease or bend it cannot remove stains, scratches, etc. It is not magic, it cannot make things disappear, it cannot make repairs. -

'Supposedly' it's rare but I seem to run across them occasionally. Unless it's a buck or two, I now pass on them. -

PGM Young Romance Comics Vol 1 #1 1947
Bomber-Bob replied to M-F0uRce99's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
A press would probably help. I would NOT mess with the pencil marks. Erased pencil looks worse. You can still see either an imprint or a discoloration. A loss of color is a worse flaw than a pencil mark. Note, I do not like the pencil mark, it is not original, but I dislike erased pencil marks more. -
When to press? Advice sought...
Bomber-Bob replied to oldrover's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I agree, a few minor flaws adds character. Even if a book is a key, if it is very low grade, a press will make the book look unnatural. Analagous to a black hair dye or a facelift on a 50 year old, it just doesn't look right. It's too bad the marketplace, nor CGC, doesn't recognize this. Years ago, I think CGC was a bit more lenient on minor bends and wrinkles. Today, everything they see is pressed and flat, so they are more harsh. -

OldRover, this is your answer. Good advice that you should heed. -

How did you come up with that ? There is absolutely no guarantee or metric for what a press can deliver. You've been posting enough lately and submitting books to CCS for evaluation that I am surprised by your question. -
You can always start a Sales thread here. Curious as to why you chose, apparently, one specific Board Member ?

Green Lantern #76 at Half Price Books
Bomber-Bob replied to finalfan7asy's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
I was just in the HPB by me in Downers Grove. During a conversation with the HPB employee he mentioned that a couple years ago the Countryside store had a Hulk 181 for sale for 1,000. I laughed and said I knew the guy that bought it ! Sometimes our hobby is a small world. -
Is this SCS or a poor CGC slab job?
Bomber-Bob replied to Darxlot's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Since you submitted the book, what did it look like when you sent it off ? Were the pages fanning, was the bend there ? Since it is in a 9.8 holder, I would not mess with it for fear of lowering the grade. If you don't like the looks of it, I would sell it and buy one more to your liking. -
I was never aware of this thread. So cool to see all these great copies. I got my very first copy ever this past August from Greg Reece. I had to step up to the plate and swing at the first pitch because I knew it wouldn't last long but so glad I did............ .

Just got this copy, 2nd highest graded behind one in 8.5 . Always a thrill to find a book like this. -

Which would you cho0se
Bomber-Bob replied to c_mkv's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Neither book sounds like they would be upgradeable so it all depends on eye appeal. I have a hunch book 2 would look better, at least the front cover. -
Foil covers and pressing?
Bomber-Bob replied to drotto's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I think CGC recognizes the fact that foil covers are prone to creases and are more lenient with them. If the creases are indeed 'mild', I would not press. -

I just see an accumulation of small stuff, no major flaws. I don't like that cigarette burn (?) but still I can see this at 5.0 on a good day. Nice book ! -
CGC9.8 with indentation on back cover
Bomber-Bob replied to Chaos_in_Canada's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
In 2003, they were not as strict on surface flaws. Today, with the advent of pressing, they are used to seeing completely flat books void of surface flaws. By today's standards, this is a 9.6 . You would be crazy to resubmit. -
What's new in your Silver Age collection this week
Bomber-Bob replied to Silver's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
This is a nice book and I concur on the old label goodness. With that in mind, why do you want to get it pressed and regraded ? Is there something you see that a press will greatly improve the grade ? I'm not sure but I think I see a bottom right corner crease that will hold it in the 8.5 range. Even if you were to squeeze a 9.0 out of this, is it worth it ? You lose the originality, you lose that nice plump spine, and you lose the old label. -

Bomber-Bob replied to Shark's topic in Comics General
Wow, I didn't realize the Goodwill had much in the way of comics, let alone an opportunity like this. Great score ! Apparently some people still think comic books have no real value. -
Duck, I surrender. You choose not to believe my comments about TAT, that's fine. As I stated above, I am not speaking as a representative of CGC, just speaking from personal experience. Good luck with your submissions. Good luck with your complaints. Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and experience here. Thank you so much for the lessons on comprehension reading.
