  1. I think this is an early version of the new slab, the one without an inner well, the version they call the 'creep engine'. If so, I would definitely stay away from it as the book may have sustained damage. This is too common a book to risk buying this example.
  2. I have no idea what you are referring to ? That is a terrible scan, take a pic instead.
  3. Of course I realize this. This isn't really a Newbie type of question and the OP is NOT a Newbie. This probably should have been poised in Comics General, where this topic is addressed frequently. You can look at my posts and see I am very active here and try to answer many questions. At least I don't hide my comments under the guise of a fake/new ID like many others.
  4. Regarding the OP, I've already commented to him in another thread with a similar themed question, to simply using the Search function.
  5. How many times do we need to discuss this ? Same topic, same answers. Boring.
  6. You really need to show a pic of the WHOLE book to get an answer. In general, it should not affect the grade.
  7. This is your reason to slab ! Knowing your situation, submit all candidates in one big CGC prescreen, hopefully same tier. You will win some/lose some but this one at a time approach is not working for me, is it working for you ? I know you don't care about money but still.
  8. Why is any comment about the effects of pressing a book viewed as a line in the sand ? I like pressing when it is done safely, by a professional, and done with the conservation of the book in mind. Buying a T-shirt press, turning up the heat, and sticking the book in there for the sole reason of making money is something I am not a fan of. It's not a matter of being a fan of pressing, it's a matter of being a fan of the books.
  9. Totally agree. GA books do not look right being completely flat. It would be okay to do some spot pressing on a problem area that may be improved but just to stick the whole book into a heat press looks so unnatural. Oh well.
  10. Thanks Lion, good info AND it makes sense ! It's no different then when I'm bagging and boarding books at home. Sometimes I run out and make do with a different size for the book, putting a Silver Age book into a Golden Age bag and Board. I've always thought encapsulation is probably one of the most 'dangerous' aspects of the grading process. Combine that with the dangers of shipping and I'm surprised our books survive the whole process. As a side comment, incidents like this should make those that do reholders, just for the heck of it, think twice. If the case is not damaged and the book is a nice fit, don't mess with it !
  11. They don't hold books for insurance reasons. The insurance you pay on your invoice is based on the value claimed and length of time for tier used. It costs them money to hold your books. While I've never been able to have them hold any of my submissions, I have heard of them occasionally accommodating. I'm sure someone will brag here how they have been able to get books held. Maybe you can use them as a reference.
  12. IMO, this is not the fault of the submitter, it's the fault of CGC. Being a big fan of pedigrees, I believe the integrity of pedigrees need to be maintained. Years ago, you needed more than just an 'I was told by someone that this is a pedigree' for CGC to grant it. Obviously, they are too lenient. A quick check of their own database would have shown another copy existed. This example should be forwarded to CGC, maybe they can recall the book. This should not be swept under the table with a Meh attitude.
  13. I read where they are having Server problems today.
  14. Hey Lion, can you expound on your statement ' a different inner well should have been used' ? Other than size, I'm not familiar with different types.
  15. I understand what you are getting at but I think that dot was applied 'wet'. You can see the ink spreading out from the dot.
  16. Usually, 'cleaning' refers to a dry eraser in the white areas, especially on the Back Cover near the spine area which are often 'dirty'. I don't think they will touch the pencil marks but who knows ?
  17. Yeah, this interaction was a classic example but I am assuming Comic Girl is a girl so it may not apply. I hope I'm wrong but the Newbie girl seems all about the financials and we have yet to see a pic of a comic.
  18. While I like to employ the gentle tap method of centering, in this case, it won't work. There is a wedge, on the back, visible from the front, that is holding it in place. With the wedge holding the book in place, tapping it may cause crinkling or stress on the staples. The staples get affected when the wedge holds the cover in place but the insides move. I like the wedge on my books but this was not applied correctly here.
  19. Okay, I accept your challenge. Let's start with Hulk 181. You quoted you bought a VG copy for 1300 (always about the financials with you). Big deal. I have a slabbed 9.6 . How about the big boy, Hulk 1 itself. I have a slabbed 7.0, what you got girl ?
  20. Read my comment to the OP above. Without seeing the book in hand, they won't comment. It's not a simple yes or no answer, As with all flaws, it depends on the severity and the condition of the rest of the book. It may be, in some cases, they will consider the flaw bindery and in other cases, because of the severity, they will not ignore it.
  21. I don't think we will be able to tell you how CGC will grade your book, especially without any pics. As with all flaws, it depends on the severity of the flaw. Tears are tough because they can get bigger. What may be small (your opinion) now may morph into something bigger by the time the graders see it. If CGC does see this flaw a lot on this issue, I suspect your book would have to be otherwise perfect and compare favorably to other copies they've seen to even have a chance at consideration for a 9.8. IMO, it's still a flaw and should be downgraded. Ask yourself if you would be happy purchasing this book as a 9.8, paying the 9.8 premium. Also, there is no way your store should claim CGC will give it a pass. You can contact CGC but I suspect they will say they need to see the book = you will have to send it in to get graded.
  22. CGC will say send it in and we'll look at it, they don't give grading advice over the phone.
