  1. Sorry but I am confused. I thought you got the book reholdered and now you are saying it came back regraded and restored ?
  2. LOL. I think there probably is a generational difference of opinion going on here. Us old timers like to fend for ourselves and not necessarily ask for help. Sometimes, myself definitely included, we can get cranky about it. We are usually cranky from sleep deprivation because we have to keep getting up to urinate all night long. Give us another chance !
  3. I know we all have different likes and dislikes but, unless it is damaged, I just can't understand why people spend the money to get a slab reholdered. Especially with all the controversies about the new slab regarding damaging the books and Newton Rings.
  4. From personal experience, if this book is a keeper in your collection, don't do it. You can always press it in the future if you change your mind. If you plan on selling the book, proceed with pressing.
  5. I remember I had a SA key that obviously had a tear seal with some white powdery residue from glue. I gave it to Matt, when he was in Texas, for removal and it still got a Purple label. I had to give it to Matt two more times, for a total of 3 submissions, before CGC gave it a clean bill of health. It appears they can be very strict on this with any hint, even on a micro level, getting the hammer. I wonder if attaching a note about the tape removal would have helped ? Not sure if they would pass a note along to the graders or not ?
  6. Not much they could do anyway unless they had the book back in hand.
  7. First off, that was a bad decision to remove the tape yourself. You should have had it professionally removed by them. You should be able to salvage the situation by having them professionally remove the tape residue.
  8. Seriously, you are going about this all wrong. I would turn over the raw collection to an auction house, like Comiclink. They will take care of the evaluation, submitting to CGC, etc. You do have to commit to selling the books on their site. There should be no upfront costs to you as they will take any grading fees out of your sales. They can also get your books graded at a discount rate. There will be a 10% commission on the sales. I am not an employee of Comiclink, just a fan.
  9. I agree, how can anyone here give a definitive answer on this. Contact CGC.
  10. I'm not sure how we can help you, you need to call CGC. Good luck. BTW, I've learned to take a phone pic of most any document I don't keep the physical copy of.
  11. Why not give a grade range ? Instead of saying mid grade, say 4.5 - 7.5 = your interpretation of mid grade. While I concur with your definition of low, mid, and high grade, others may differ. Another thought, go ahead and use your definition of low, mid, and high grade but explain your definition in the narrative.
  12. Taken from the CGC website, you can google the details of each flaw, with pics........ Some of the side effects of improper pressing include staining, warping, edge rippling, crushed spines, reverse spine-roll, flaring, cockling, pebbling, gloss stains and melted inks.
  13. I'm sorry but you seem to be searching for some guarantees for your book, which is impossible for us to give you. If you doubt my statement, ask your prospective pressing service what kind of guarantee they give. There is always a possibility of damage from handling, from pressing, from shipping, from encapsualtion, etc . S**t happens . From personal experience, I have experienced newly introduced tears from the pressing process. So there is there a chance, not a probablility, but a chance.
  14. That's a good story. When Matt was pressing for his personal books, he did amazing work. To my knowledge, he doesn't personally press too much these days, just the real high end stuff on occasion. That's what makes answering these pressing questions to newbies so difficult. The difference between an experienced presser devoting some time to a book is worlds apart from the assembly line, mass quantity work performed by 'associates'. Is a staple vulnerable to being popped ? Can a taco make you sick ?
  15. Questions for you: - You believe the costs of your remote storage would be cheaper than a Bank Safety Deposit ? - Would your remote storage would have the equivalent security of a Bank Security Vault ? - My insurance policy recognizes a Bank Vault under my policy = I am covered for the books in the Bank Vault. Would my insurance company recognize your remote storage business ? I think you have a creative idea but I honestly don't think you thought this through as to why it would appeal to a serious collector. Sorry.
  16. I store many of my books in multiple Bank Safety Deposit Boxes. Immediate access to all of my books is not important for me. Having said that, I would never hand off my books to a third party for remote storage. Sorry but I don't think your business idea would work, at least not for me.
  17. I think it would help your E-Bay listing if you gave the background story on this book. Personally, I am not familiar with it at all.
  18. CGC uses 'detached' . It is common in the marketplace to use either popped or detached, synonymous terms.
  19. For me, no doubt about choosing Option 1. Even if the staple does not pop, I have had personal experiences with staple tears. You have to look at the location of the staple to make a good decision. If it's pretty much on the vertex of the spine, you should be fine. However, if it's off from the spine, there is danger. Also, I think a low grade wrinkled book looks unnatural with poor eye appeal after being flattened from a press.
  20. So true, I recently turned down an offer from a Boardie to fill in large quantities for some of the holes in my DCU collection because I wanted to retain the thrill of the chase. Actually, I try to maintain a 5.00 max unless the FMV of the regular edition is higher, though they usually are not. My LCS has recognized people are collecting these and started asking a lot more, double to triple. I've passed on many books because of the price. I look at this as a cheap, fun chase to keep me satisfied from spending the bigger bucks on vintage.
  21. Maybe he's talking about that thing where Matt will be at a convention offering screening on pressing candidates ? I vaguely remember seeing something on that.
  22. The PreScreen option for CGC is not new, always been there. It is not 'free' = you get charged for rejects. As suggested above, look at the website or call them for more info.
