Good question. If you look at Avengers #1, prices have pulled back from the speculative peak in Feb/Mar of this year. My guess is that they will run up, more copies will come on the market that will dampen early price gains and drive prices down a bit, and then we will see another smaller gain closer to the movie when the average joe who needs to have one enters the market. Right now it is long time collectors finally getting a copy and speculators driving up the prices IMHO.

Yes, and we started how much later than the AF #15 fans........amazing how much a simple movie announcement can stir up interest in a funny book.

not much talk lately .....so let me throw this out there...i have 4 copies coming back from cgc next week..and 6 more ready to sub soon...there are very few GPA sales to date...and the FORUM sales area seems slow lately....is it to everybody's benifit or is it bad to raise the gpa info on this book?....i can easily sell on ebay and the gpa will rise..or sell here for less/equal to ebay/paypal fees....and the price in GPA never changes.....?? GPA has few recent sales...a lot of "RAW" book have sold for record prices as well.......thoughts? keep the gpa down? or get the ball rolling..all these private sales are doing nothing for the stats.... If you have anything in 4.0 or higher put it up on eBay and see what happens. Most of us on the boards are too cheap to pay a premium for a copy right now.

Have you had it for a while or is it a recent acquisition? I had this high grade SC22 for a while and a a few dozens silver age/bronze spideys I ve sent out to get graded. I see. One good book (SC 22) along with the junk. Some of these JUNK spideys may be top on the CGC census. That should bring in some big dollars for you if they are.

Wow. When you look at the book based on this list you truly appreciate how hard it is to find a nice mid grade copy, let alone a high grade one.

Very nice. Is it on the website or going straight to auction? Should bring $5K plus in that condition.

If only it was a 7.0 Showcase #22, though.

I hope I get to prove you wrong on the last part! The fact that (other than sending my son to Chicago, and a google adwords campaign) I have not started advertising this sale yet and still we have some of what seem to me (I admit my opinion dosen't count for much) to be the top collectors in the country chatting about a collection of 3000+ books when we have not even finished putting the information for the first 100 books online, says I might be doing something right. OK that was a run on sentance and I lose 20 points. Now back to work. Rob Lite is updating our google doc with the grades, and CGC facts, I am updating the auctionzip site and the website. By the way if you have not discovered auctionzip yet you need to give it a look. We use it for all of our auctions and it is great. You can use it for free to find local auctions in your area (hince the zip part of the name). If you pay a very small fee (I am not connected with them so I get no part of the fee) you can search 14,000 auctioneers auctions. Imagine if you did a search on say green lantern. You might find a treasure at a local auction. Just a thought, and now I have given back a small tid bit for all the help you fine folks have given me. enjoy. Rob I truly hope that you top $20K with this book in the auction on your site, but I would expect that there were a lot of potential buyers for it who were not a Chicago and primarily get their books through one of the big three comic auction sites instead. While there are a lot of deep pockets on the boards here (and at least one of them is going to be bidding on your book (thumbs u ), we are but a small piece of the collecting landscape. The big three sites I mentioned have long established reputations and client lists, and some of them might not be aware of it. However, don't be surprised if representatives from their organizations are bidding on the book to re-sell/re-auction on their sites. I don't know how difficult (or costly) it is to do this, but I wonder if you could take bids via an eBay live auction for the week running up to your auction like Heritage does. This would help to get you global exposure for a very significant collection of SA books at hopefully a fraction of the normal advertising costs.

Maybe this high price may bring a few more 5.0's or 6.0's out. I think $15000-20000 for the 8.0 Mound City copy looks reasonable now. Define "reasonable"! This book is currently driven by supply and demand. Collectors now recognizes that SC 22 page quality is normally crm/ow. This particular 5.5 has off-white pages, and as detective27kid said " On sc22 pq is a big deal if you are looking for a separating quality over other copies". This copy deserves a premium...but $3803.64??? Regarding the Mound City 8.0, this is the only publicly high grade copy available for sale and the rest is tucked away in collections. Below are examples of other notable Silver Age keys sales which I have mentioned before. Let's use BB 28 and Avengers 1 as a comparison. The 3rd highest graded BB 28 (which there is five) sold in Comiclink for $21000. Also, let's use Avengers 1 as a comparison. A 8.0 (5th highest and 23 copies) sold in CL for $26000 and a 9.0 (4th highest and ten copies) for $20000 again in CL. Showcase 22 is in high demand and there are less high grade copies available compare to their counterparts. Man, the 5.5 got almost $4k....I can't even guess what the Mound copy will bring now. Tim (tth2), any thoughts on what you think that 8.0 Mound may bring at auction? I couldn`t even guess. The market is way too fluid for this book right now, plus I really don`t follow prices of non-NM books. I guess it wouldn`t surprise me if this book broke the $10K mark, but that`s about all i can say. I can agree with that (thumbs u It will be interesting to see where the Mound City copy ends up. Most (all?) of us here agree that it is not an 8.0 book, but that is what the label says. My guess is that it sets a new record (can it top the price paid for the 9.0s?) for SC #22 IF it gets sufficient exposure since a lot of (or most of) collectors will pay for the CGC grade, not the book in the holder. The only thing I can see that might hurt the price a bit is that they are doing the auction themselves and not on one of the big three sites (Clink, CC or Heritage).

The problem with 7 is Sinestro doesn't appear on the cover and 7 is so tough to find. Looks like there's a very nice copy of 7 in the Mound City collection, though. That is a nice copy. Too bad it's not graded. I think for the long term, GL 7 should do very well. It is graded and is a 9.0. So, it ranks up there. It really is too bad he is not on the cover. Wow, it's a 9.0. I could be wrong in this, but my impression has always been that JLA was much more popular with DC collectors than Avengers was with Marvel collectors. Next to Batman-related titles, I'd say that JLA was usually the 2nd most popularly collected DC title, whereas I think Avengers historically trailed several of the individual titles. The comparisons aren't perfect, because there were multiple Batman titles while Marvel had a limited number of titles plus several anthology titles that featured 2 characters, but I know a lot more DC collectors for whom JLA was their #1 or #2 title than Marvel collectors for whom Avengers was their #1 or #2 title. I think it depends when you started reading comics. For me, that was 1987/88 (X-Men #211) and JLA was a lame title. For old school collectors, JLA probably has strong appeal but for Marvel Zombie converts or those of us who started reading comics in the 80s, say post-Crisis, then JLA does not hold the same appeal. At that time, even West Coast Avengers was a better read than JLA.

Wow, I am surprised that no other copies have popped up on eBay yet. I was hoping that would be the case, but so far no such luck.

What about GL #7?

I could buy the argument that B&B 28 is just a later version of All Star #3 (which obviously it is), but not that it`s an earlier version of Avengers #1. This completely dismisses its historical and influential role in the Silver Age and its direct impact on creating the Marvel era, which is something no other DC book can claim. It`s like saying that Batman is basically an earlier version of Moon Knight. If you`re going to go down that path, then you`re vulnerable to the stupid argument that the Marvel Zombies always use: what`s so special about Showcase #22, since it`s just the reintroduction of a character who first appeared in All American #16? What I meant by that comment is that B&B #28 suffers price wise for the same reason Avengers #1 does - it does not have the first appearace of any heroes. I am not knocking its historical signficance at all since even Marvel zombies have to admit that without B&B #28 there would be no FF and the Marvel SA in general. If you want to compare it All Star #3, then you see the same issue again as All Star #3 is not on the same price plateau as the first appearances of a lot of the GA heroes. FWIW, I am looking for a mid grade B&B #28 right now since I think it is undervalued a bit. Sure, Hal GL is definitely a reintro and improvement on the playboy GL of the GA. However, the zombies can't really win with that argument since the science or sci-fi ties that DC used to update/remake the characters several years before FF #1 obviously influenced Stan Lee's approach to how the Marvel characters "received" their powers as well. You could argue that all Stan did was rehash DCU concepts to create his characters.

I'm just saying that the market is not being driven by reason, or at least by anything reasonable related to appreciation of comics. Call it irrational exhuberance! I would say that prices are being driven by demand, not supply. The supply a year or two ago was the same as it is today (actually less, because copies are coming out of the woodwork now). So why is the price suddenly going up? Because demand has gone crazy. And why has demand gone crazy? Because of pure speculation. People want to get a copy to invest in hoped for profits down the road (or maybe next week). I do agree...it's irrational exuberance! This SC 22 5.5 sold for double what a BB28 in 5.5 and one and a half time a Avengers 1 in 5.5. At this rate it is the second most valued DC Silver Age comic and this is not based on OSPG prices. Also, the data that Peewee22, the help with others, and I collected confirms the supply and the scarcity of higher grade copies. (thumbs u SC #22 should is the second most important DC SA key behind #4 in my opinion. B&B #28 is nice, but it is basically an earlier version of Avengers #1.

Wow....that is high to me....Rick, (Detective27) what do you think? I have a strong "feeling" as to where the price both "should" go, and "might" end up... however, I have found from past experience that when I am an active participant , I should keep my cards "close to me" I'll say this much. I think this book, and this book alone, will be the preamble for HG 22s to come over the years... Uh oh, if Rick is in the house then the rest of us might as well forget about chasing it.

Descent reading copy. Can't just own only one copy...some members in this club have a second copy...third copy...fourth copy so far. Some of us peon collectors only have ONE copy... I guess it's the definition of quantities or qualities. It's nice to have more than one copy, but attaining a high grade copy will be satisfying for most people. In case anyone is wondering about the CGC 5.5 copy on eBay, I asked the seller whether it had been pressed and here is his response: "Not to my knowledge, I purchased it already graded and in the CGC case. I would be happy to send you whatever angle/picture you would like. Or let me know if there is something you would like me to look for in particular and I will."
