Interesting how they spelled his name back then. Was it wrong then? Is it wrong now? When did it change?

    One can't be right.

Horrors, I just realized I may have been spelling it wrong the last 50 years.

I never even noticed that! It's definitely Mxyzptlk now.

I checked Wikipedia and learned this: " In Superman #131 (1959), the spelling of Mxyztplk's name changed (by some accounts through mistake) to "Mxyzptlk""

  2. Grabbed this one off Ebay and didn't realize until I got it that it came from a boardie (Thirdgreenham - I recognized his name when I saw it on his Forest City Coins business card).

Besides being an Oakland (I hope), and the fact that I love the pre-Kirby Losers covers where Kubert works the logo into the art, I was sold on this book by the CGC mis-labelling of the issue. I don't think I'll get the label changed, I love the novelty of having it incorrect!

Thanks Mr. Greenham, I loved reading the family history on your webpage, and thanks for the stamps!

Very cool of you Sha and ditto on the fantastic nails!!

I enjoyed the Supergirl episode but like you said wasn't quite the imp I was expecting when I heard he was making an app but it was still neat to see him in general and get to see everyone pronounce his name

Did they trick him into saying it backwards?

My friend and I hit the show about 11:30 and, though the lineup stretched halfway across the parking lot, only had to wait about ten minutes to get in as the two girls handling admission did a great job keeping things moving.

It was my first time at this show and I brought $500 in case I saw anything I liked up on the walls (preferably slabbed). But it seemed most of the graded stuff was either mid-grade or really overpriced (I've been spoiled by the sales threads here).

The main room with the artists' alley and CBCS on stage was laid out well and, despite the crowd, was relatively easy to navigate. The other room was worse, though, with narrow aisles jammed with attendees fighting to get past anyone foolish enough to stop and try to browse a vendor's table.

Stayed for about an hour and a half and left with $500 still sitting in my wallet, but it was a great way to spend a Sunday (only $8 with free parking) and I will be back!

  5. Once again, great info from all who have posted.

I didn't realize pulps had such a different grading scale from comics, but it sounds like it is necessary. Based on what I've read it sounds like a VF copy of some of these old pulps (due to age, printing process, etc) is as rare as a NM comic of the same vintage.

It also sounds like the best place to find pulps is online. Does this mainly mean Ebay? Or are there some pulp dealers online anyone can recommend? And how is the grading for pulps on Ebay? About the same hit and miss as it is for comics?

Thanks again for the info, and keep those great covers coming!

That's a book worthy of a second posting! Love the strong color.

Congrats!  Like you, I feel fortunate just having a copy of this gem...

This cover grabs me. And Lovecraft :cloud9:

As a pulp neophyte, I was just wondering a few things:

How big is pulp supply/demand (say, in relation to comics)?

Is there a recommended price guide?

Can you get these graded and slabbed?

    Teen-Age Romances 32- CGC 4.0- OW/W- $750

A Baker grail you don't see every day. I never scanned the back cover and my wife is asleep by the comic room. Nothing weird going on with it though and I can send a pic before you pay, if needed. Definitely a top 5, if not top 3 Baker cover IMO.

She is definitely a lot of things, but demure ain't one of 'em!

Beautiful pickup, congrats to both on a great deal!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but there are many other so-called "non-restorative" work besides just a simple clean and press that can be done to book and it would still be considered as unrestored from CGC's point of view.  :gossip:   Don't think that is the situation here, but who really knows.  (shrug)

As for the change in PQ, grading is really nothing more than just a matter of opinion at a particular point in time, and when it comes to page color, apparently it is one of the least scientific and most subjective part out of the entire grading process.  :juggle:

For some reason I'm reminded of the old Rodney Dangerfield joke: "I asked my dentist how can I make my teeth look more white. He told me wear a brown necktie!"

Noticed that I said "in theory" which means that Heritage would be taking both the BP and SP since we do not know if there were any special deals here.

My line of thinking is that if the book hammers at $59K, this means that the final price paid and the one that goes down as the actual sales price would be $70,505 which would include Heritage's 19.5% BP.  In theory, the seller would be seeing only $53,100 since Heritage would also be entitled to their 10% SP.  Since the consignor originally paid CC just over $50K for the book in the first place, this means they will be left with about $3K to pay for whatever upgrade work was done to the book along with the regrading fees.  hm

So, if the final realized price doesn't go over $70K for this book, the consignor could in theory be out some money on his purchase of this book.

I assume, seeing as how the book isn't listed as restored, that the upgrade work was a simple press and clean, but how did the pages get improved from "Cream to Off-White" to Off-White?

That is a sweet setup, but do you have any reservations about keeping those comics in direct sunlight? My slabs are like Gremlins: no water, no light and I never feed them after midnight!

  11. I ordered these four great-looking frames from Frame It Again, Sam years ago for a comic room that was never meant to be. They are in great shape, barely used and hold a standard CGC slab (not the new thicker ones). I paid over $100 for them. They can be yours for $50, shipping included (USA/Canada only - comic not included).

    Issues included are: 58, 62, 76, 82, 84, 86, 87, 89, 90, 101, 102, 107, 112, 115, 120 and Special Editions 2, 3 and 4.
