You'll get through this, @jimjum12! Keep doing all the physical therapy they throw at you! My dad had a major stroke in 2021 and recovered remarkably well within a year--walking, driving, working, everything. I remember at the time how encouraging it was to hear from a few customers and friends who had previously had strokes, and recovered, and reached out with words of encouragement and hope. I hope you get that support and feeling of hope too. Everybody's circumstances are different but the body is resilient and through rehab and physical therapy the brain can rebuild so much of what was damaged by stroke. We're all pulling for you!

Unfortunately, no. The only graders notes we record are any defects that are mentioned in the public item notes you can already view--and those notes are usually limited to things that are A) not readily apparent from the cover scan or B) especially problematic for some buyers even when acceptable within the assigned grade. Nobody is paying us $20+ to grade and slab their comic, so we aren't able to put as much detail into describing grade issues as CGC sometimes does.

Buccaneers 21 raw 5.5- we sold a much lower graded copy, FR/GD, for $65 Nov 27. Your $189 asking price isn't unreasonable, but you've only had the book listed since Dec 5, only lowered the price to $189 earlier today, and last GPA for a CGC 5.5 was $169 in October. I would drop the price another 10-15% or so in 5% increments over a span of maybe 2-3 months before I would put it into auction, unless you just want to be done with it. Marvel Family 38 raw 4.0, price lowered today to $64. I think your price is fine, could sell there to the right person, or might need to drop to the $50ish range. Just depends how quickly you want to move it. Like with the Buccaneers I'd give it another 2-3 months and another few 5% drops down to around $50 or so before I'd auction it.

We have Heroes and Baltimore on our schedule again for 2024, and would be nice to add a Chicago area convention. Any recommendations or requests about shows in the Chicago/upper midwest area we should consider? C2E2, Chicago Fan Expo, Motor City? Priorities for us are accessibility of load in/load out both for us and for consignors wanting to bring boxes to us to drop off, and the show having a large enough presence of comics people and comic dealers and not just pop culture stuff.

A grading charge of $125 for something that was supposed to be a reholder sounds like a mistake somewhere along the way but without knowing the account details I can't provide a concrete answer. If you PM me the email address on your account and the book in question I can ask about it, or you can email consign@mycomicshop.com and they should be able to look into it and let you know what's going on and fix it if something was done in error.

Yes, if you'd like us to send it to CGC and it comes back blue label, we'd be fine with that. We won't reject a book from CGC unless we absolutely know there's something wrong with it--for example we wouldn't knowingly accept a book we knew was counterfeit that managed to slip past CGC. There's enough to question about that bottom edge that we're not comfortable selling it raw without the trimming notation, but if CGC says it's not that's good enough for us.

Hadn't met in person but on the boards he was a class act and a welcome presence. He will be sorely missed. If there's anything we can do for his family, I'm in.

I'm biased but I think it's accurate to say there's no better venue than us for books like that. We have the largest audience for them, across the MCS website plus cross listing to ebay, so getting 100-110-120% of market via BIN is pretty easy and often sells pretty quick if priced at or close to market. The stuff that lingers and doesn't move is usually priced well above market. Variants can also do well in auction, especially if they're rare enough there isn't a clearly established market price. We have sufficient qty of people watching and interested in modern variants to drive them to good prices. As always there's more variability with auctions than BIN--you can have a rare item go for 150-200% of what you expected, or it can go for less than what you could have got with a fair BIN asking price.

The consignor pricing his own books is the default, but we are happy to price books for the consignor if they prefer.

As of Jan 2024 we'll be collecting sales tax for all states except the following: no sales tax: DE, MT, NH, OR has sales tax but we're below the threshold: MA, MS, ND. In Massachusetts, both new release comics and old/collectible comics are not subject to tax, and with those categories excluded our sales are below the threshold.

Okay, okay, not quite a test tube but

My understanding is: ComicLink does charge per book handling fees for sending books to grading, although I'm sure there are various agreements offered to specific consignors depending on the nature and quantity of what's involved. Heritage may not charge per book handling fees for grading submission, but their seller and buyer fees add up to 30%+ whereas ours are generally 8-10% (our 3% BP is easily avoidable) so don't see how that's a plus. I could easily absorb the cost of sending books to CGC free of charge if we charged as much as Heritage does. Don't know specifics at ComicConnect. If you give any of us several long boxes of high grade bronze and modern books you want to get graded, nobody's going to eat that cost (handling, shipping to CGC and back from CGC, CGC invoice fees, etc). It will either be an explicit charge per book, or if there's no charge it's likely because you're paying more to the auction house in seller commission/buyer's premium.

I can't speak to any specific books in the abstract, have to have an actual book in hand for us to look at and review why we arrived at our grade, but in our internal testing comparing our grading vs CGC's across a larger sample of test books, the most common area that produces larger differences in grade are internal flaws, such as a partially detached centerfold, and in some cases spine issues. Things that are either completely invisible once a book is encapsulated (interior flaws), or at least harder to see (some spine stuff). In some cases, we think CGC just missed the interior flaws, and in other cases, they didn't necessarily miss them but don't account for them as strongly as we do because again, once encapsulated, the flaw isn't visible. Raw books purchased from us are easily opened up and our buyers do see those flaws. I have no idea whether that's relevant to this book or not, and not saying it is--just pointing out that in my experience those interior and sometimes spine defects are often responsible for the largest difference of opinion between us and CGC.

It's not so much an intentional omission as just something we have never built support for. Currently, items are either BINs, or auctions, but not both. We could build something to allow items to be designated for auction in the future but remain as BINs. It's doable, and a good idea.
