Great books, all of them!

My Western has glasses, my Action does not. The stories are typical Atlas fare, and probably sub-par compared to the contemporary stuff from other Atlas mags. There's a real tear-jerker in the Action by Tuska, but the book only has 2 or 3 war stories. The rest are sports/spy/manly-men type stuff. They're impossible in any kind of decent shape as they're oversized (magazine width, comic height) and the covers are on a pretty flimsy cover stock. It seems even worse than other Atlas comics, whereas other 3-D books were on a thicker stock. As an aside, do you know who Heath used as a model on this book? It's definitely not his typical face, and I know he felt that he wasn't a good face-drawer. I recall him saying he often used his reflection in a mirror, but I've never seen him draw another face like this one.

Check your Oversteet. It's the "Something About Mary" prototype issue. HE"S ALIVE!!!!!

I've seen one copy on Ebay. IIRC it went for a pretty penny.

Then how much less exciting and less significant is the 72nd issue if New Comics? Like I said, the 172nd teaming of Simon and Kirby isn't exactly a reason to value a book 8-10x the issue before it (or 8-10x as much as their first true collaboration and superhero creation in Blue Bolt). You would at least have a semi-valid point if you were arguing for the #73. You're setting up a straw man. I never said Adventure 72 was important. In fact, I implied it wasn't. My argument is that Tec 1 isn't "all that". There's no way you could get me to pay that kind of $$$ for an adventure 72, but if I was forced to pick between those two, I'd probably defer to the dreamy Burnley cover. At least that's how I feel about it today. I reserve the right to change my opinion.

Giving a company its initials has no value to me. I'm not sure how that adds any value to the book. Detective Comics is long running because of Batman, not because of the first issue. If it wasn't for Batman, you'd be making the same argument for New Comics #1. Another book that I have a hard time coming up with any real historic significance for.

Assuming this is a situation where I have the $$ to blow, I'm tempted to go with the Adventure. The Tec is cool for being an early DC, but it's not the first. And the cover is pretty duds-ville to me. You can argue that the Adventure is an overrated book, but aside from being a first issue, what does the Tec have going for it? If you told some joe out on the street that you had the first issue of Detective Comics, he'd probably be unimpressed. That goes for the Adventure as well. So all things considered, I think I'd go for the awesome Burnley cover in unrestored HG.

Here are a few I have scanned. I think I have the GIC 56, 68, and AAMOW 28. Not sure about the others. I'd put my GIC 68 up against anyone's (except Kagemusha)

I think those are pretty high numbers. I don't see someone wanting to pony up that kind of coin for a book that they know isn't going to be the highest graded. It's one thing to pay $1M for the best copy of the best book, but not for the 2nd or 3rd best. Bragging rights need to come with that kind of an investment. Look how much pub Dave Anderson gets on this board - while Geppi is an afterthought (despite having an equally impressive collection). Keep in mind, the 4.0 that Zaid sold was kind of an aberration - Metro sold a similarly graded copy for substantially less AFTER that sale. I don't think that price translates upward.

Tough one. Right now I say Supes 1. Another time I might go for the Action.

For those folks that like Larsons, part of the reason is the name on the cover. It adds a personal connection to the original purchaser -- whom some have actually met. With GA books the distributor markings add charm in the eyes of many collectors rather than being viewed as a distraction. I'm in that camp, though I will admit to having converted from a less favorable, though never hostile, point of view.
