  1. I had a book with a 1.5 inch split that otherwise looked 8.5 or so and was graded 6.5. The split was torn into the cover very slightly at the top. Mind you, this was when CGC was grading pretty loosely and I wouldn't be surprised if it regraded lower. But it also sounds notably worse than what you're describing.
  2. Really captures Saunders' style at that time. Great example Dwight!
  3. There is no Quinlan art in this series. The 1951 series is all Bob Powell.
  4. The Powell art in these is really incredible. These are from #6 IIRC
  5. Agreed. And while he has a distinctive style (his noses are the tell for me), he was also fluid enough that at times I have a hard time recognizing his work.
  6. Yup. When you take a magazine about comics and make it not about comics then people who like comics won't buy it.
  7. Internet had nothing to do with the demise of this magazine. It was entirely editorial.
  8. The boards replaced CBM/CBG in terms of how collectors communicate, network, and shared information. IG is good for networking, ok for communication, but poor for conveying robust information. Hard to put an article or its equivalent on that platform. Facebook is similar, maybe a little better for sharing info. But neither platform has the archiving aspect that the boards do. Some of the threads here are pushing 2 decades. If you are looking to learn about comics, there's no better place. If you want to show off and get likes, this isn't the place to do it.
  9. Figured I'd start a thread to discuss some of the upcoming books. We have both the Rainone collection with a bunch of Spicys, as well as some Weird Tales coming up in the comics signature auction. Although it's a nice selection of books, I really have to say that the grading looks terrible across the board. I don't see a single book in either auction that appears accurately graded. Some are 2-3 grades off. Am I the only one who feels this way?
  10. This is what I see and feel. There’s only so many times I can talk about the same things. Not to mention that the number of places things can be discussed has expanded. Instagram and Facebook have grown notably. I would imagine if anything the volume of conversations has increased, its just spread out over many more platforms.
  11. Yeah, pretty amazing! Can’t believe it still exists.
  12. What an unusual Severin. It's over-crosshatched like Burgos had a hand in it, but the hatching is cleaner than Burgos would typically do. I wonder if this was Severin experimenting with underwater texture.
  13. Compare OAAW 11 to the Two Fisted Tales and you see a huge influence in the faces as well. What's interesting is that that style wasn't typical of Novick. I don't know if it was intentional, or if he was just trying to get the lighting correct. https://www.comics.org/issue/10569/cover/4/
  14. As Dwight has pointed out a number of times, comic collectors getting into pulps are going to struggle. There simply aren't as many pulps, both in existence and availability, to meet the demand of that constant fix that we comic folk like. There are some months that I'll get 50 comics, and there are some quarters that I get no pulps. Thank goodness I have comics to keep my fix going
