Quick question, it states 9.8 but I noted that it received a grade of 9.6 & 9.8 on the external and internal covers respectively.  How is that factored into market value?  Thanks.

The important part here is that it's graded as a 9.8 based on the interior cover. The exterior cover is a 9.6 but has kept that inner cover safe all these years. Double covers are in demand and can place a premium on a book. However, a 9.8 in this particular book with a single cover will already have a premium so I'm not sure how much the double cover will affect the overall price. Either way this'll be appealing to many buyers on many levels so expect to see this comic attain record price at the hammer. I'm looking forward to seeing the result as it has been ages since a 9.8 sold in the public domain.

There are many examples of double covers with the TMNT books, #3 especially, but they appear to be limited to the oversize editions from the original run circa 1984. Does anyone know of any examples with the regular size books?

I agree with the above advice of getting them slabbed. When you have them in hand you can decide what to do at that point. You'll get more money for the slab (and they may sell quicker), but if you don't sell them they will be protected for the future.

sale price on this Raphael was $5500. Original asking price was $7500. It was a very quick offer and deal. Congrats to both seller and buyer.

The other mentioned SS copy has a starting bid at $6999 but no 'make offer' so it's just sitting there.

There's a joker with one at $15000 but this doesn't seem to be intended to drive traffic as its the only thing they have for sale. I guess we will be looking at that for a long time to come as we have reached a plateau with the 9.8's ($5k-$6k).

I also see a lot of mid grades for sale that are collecting dust unless priced 15-20% lower than the competition. Thats the sweet spot where they are selling well and fast.

So lots of demand still for Rapheal #1 with a healthy supply, but buyers are not getting suckered; they're taking their time to get the right book for the right price.

Which one do you like better? I'm partial to the copy with interior sigs, the big, straight, beautiful interior sigs with Peter's standing out like a champ.

I have to admit that I don't own a #1 with interior sigs but that was more about availability at the time I was in the market for one than preference.

The #3 'Laird's Photo' variant is the only copy that one could be forgiven for assuming it was signed at the 1985 NYCC. At that time it was not the book you would lug around to shows to get signed. So if it was signed it was likely, but not guaranteed, that it was signed at NYCC.

and people simply didn't sign covers in those days, they signed inside...

It's totally an assumption...and yes Signatures Series books are definitely more appealing than blue labels to most collectors, myself included. But, but, if I could get my hands on a #1 with dual interior sigs I would pay much more than if it were a yellow label without.

Not sure this is what @valiantman meant when he said "scribbled" as he didn't say meaningless. The comparison was for what epoch/era they were signed in and under what circumstances. I can imagine Kevin and Peter, wide eyed and excited about their new characters, signing comics at a convention, their hopes and dreams pinned to these books. But nowadays it's a money grab with a quick flick of the pen.

9.8 TMNT #2 sold for $5500 on Hakes yesterday

blue label, white pages, no sigs...

a yellow label went for $6800 on April 29

...There's a reason you have been made this offer. You don't over-offer for something that is not going to be worth much more later... The dealer knows the upside of this book...

Hmmm...any other book I would say sell it. I'm inclined to hodl the turtle book cuz that's what I'm doing with mine. I read a post years ago where a collector had decided to sell a key to buy some rims/tires for his whip. He was derided in public but bought his wheels anyway. I always wonder how long they lasted and how much he could have potentially made by hodling instead of selling. In this case we know the book is heading to the moon so the longer you hold the better the outcome. I would sell something that is not increasing at the rate this one is and get your kitchen that way...
