  1. No, that's too much -- a copy missing only the back cover went for $71 in January -- and coverless for anything but GA is usually a very bad idea. Try to save up $250, and while you're doing that keep your eyes out because you'll probably see something near your original $150 while you wait. While I don't disagree that he should wait and find the right copy for that $150, coverless copies have sold for more than the $71 you quoted. I think the person that got that book with the front cover got a pretty good deal, as I have sold similar copies for at/over $100. Getting closer to $100 would be better (obviously), but I don't think it an unreasonable market price for a coverless #123.
  2. It’s nice to run across a couple of books you weren’t expecting to find in a shop. It’s been at least ten years since I found nice pre-hero at an LCS, but I’ll have to reset that clock now.
  3. Last I checked coverless copies were selling for about $100, and that was 2-3 years ago. I wouldn’t have a problem with the market having moved up on it, it’s a super key in my eyes.
  4. Four Awesome Comic Books, totally ruined. It looks like the Avengers #4 was signed on the bag, so that one was spared at least. Maybe the only time it was lucky to get a $150 autograph on the bag instead of the book. This clearly needs to stop.
  5. That’s a good looking copy, nicer than my first copy (my latest upgrade is the third I’ve owned). I’ve only owned a single TOS #1, which has always seemed slightly more difficult to me. It came back a 2.5 LT-OW from CGC.
  6. Makes sense, I think we are all in agreement on this. Not sure how far back you read, but this is really all about variations within the DCU variants themselves. Now that some research has been done they seem to be the exception, and yes, were done after the fact. Especially the Doomsday issues and books like GL #36.
  7. Whether or not they overprinted the comics, they were putting different covers on the DCU variants. I don't know enough about the printing process to know how difficult/easy it would be to have separate covers for the same insides. I would guess fairly easy, and would explain why the indicias are the same across those printings.
  8. Thanks for the heads up on the date, I just started a thread for it.
  9. Home Page Tremendous, comic heavy show I highly recommend if you are even remotely close to the area.
  10. I'd highly recommend the show. Great mix of dealers with a good guest list, it is well worth your Saturday to come on down and check it out (and you could stop and shop in OKC on the way back).
  11. Found one that had eluded me so far while I was at Fan Expo Dallas this past weekend, so that helped put a cherry on top of the weekend. Also met and got to chat with @ZillaCat, which was great!
  12. Thanks! It has been a good year for tough books on my want list, and a bad year for money in my wallet. Luckily it is easier to make more of the latter than find the former, so I am really happy with 2018 thus far! Congrats! Definitely post a scan of the raw here once it arrives!
  13. It was a great show, and I'm still tired from the lack of sleep. I was only there Sat-Sun because I had to teach on Friday, but two days of this show is still well worth the trip. A couple of observations: I agree, quite a few dealers brought their A game. A particular thanks to @DvilleBookstore for an upgrade to my Tales to Astonish #1 (pic in the Pre-Hero thread in SA). We had strong sales at our booth with plenty of traffic all weekend. Some sales highlights: raw 8.0 copies of Werewolf by Night #32 and ASM #129, Superboy #68 G, X-Men #266 VF/VF+, a couple of ASM #252 and 361, lots of copies of ASM #798, lots of blank covers, and tons of Funko Pops (that craze continues to amaze me with its staying power). The vendor area seemed smaller compared to last year, and aisles were also too narrow, which made getting around really difficult on Saturday. The celeb area was packed any time I saw it, and I am not sure how it was an improvement over last year. I have read/heard fewer complaints, so maybe it was. I am really disappointed by next year's dates over Free Comic Book Day weekend. I am sure the convention center is to blame, but it still sucks. Any vendors that also have stores will have a really difficult decision to make regarding their plans.
  14. WW Chicago has plenty of that non-comic stuff too, but inbetween are a bunch of excellent national and regional dealers. I never have trouble spending my entire budget any time I go, and I always come home with great books. It's my favorite way to close out the summer before the semester begins.
  15. Absolutely! Sorry I disappeared, it has been a busy couple of weeks so I haven't been checking FB as obsessively. I'll try to do better!
  16. I’d agree with all of this, with additional emphasis on the last points. DCU variants have a small enough collector base that the book needs broader appeal than that variant to warrant slabbing. I’d also add WW #90 onto the Key list as first Artemis. Raw books have jumped up, and since it’s probably worth slabbing in 9.6-9.8 as a non-variant I’d consider it for the DCU.
  17. Just more salt in my wound. It’s already a bad weekend for me personally because our big conference is that same weekend in Cleveland, so I’ll have to miss a good chunk of Planet.
  18. I’d second considering WW Chicago if you want to shop for books. It’s always an amazing show.
  19. In other news, I got an unexpected upgrade this weekend at Fan Expo Dallas.
  20. Last night I heard that Planet will be sharing this weekend with C2E2 and Wondercon. If true that is seriously terrible news.
  21. Of the books in this range of numbers I tend to see fewer #106s. But, this is also a title that I have interest in but don’t follow like a hawk.
  22. Rumor is that next year’s show falls on Free Comic Book Day weekend. Terrible choice as most dealers will be a hard pass on setting up.
