  1. At least you’ve got some blue to the right of the number box and CC stamp, so it’s better than about 2/3 of the copies out there.
  2. I don’t disagree with you about the left side of the creature, but the overall composition of that cover saves it for me. I can’t think of a more engrossing cover of a pre-hero book. If I’d seen that book on the newsstand back in the day I’d have been 12 cents poorer as fast as my hand could get into my pocket.
  3. Here is an early example of the discussion of these non-DCU multipack variants. These lists are not complete, as they were early, but I don’t have time to go through all 50+ pages at the moment.
  4. I think we’d all agree with your point, they were all distributed via collector packs. They’ve been listed and discussed here. I’d wager that they’re just discussed quite a bit less for a few reasons. 1) the symbols are different, so they’re not DCUs in the technical (perhaps pedantic) sense, 2) these other series of variants were a lot smaller and had more specific distribution (like the Zero Hour issues), and 3) those other series are better understood and more completely documented than the DCUs. New DCU variants are still occasionally popping up, while it would be pretty newsworthy to find a new Bullet or Zero Hour variant at this point.
  5. The centering on that #17 is killer. Seeing that much blue to the right of the number box and the guy’s ear in the lower right corner is
  6. I’ve always thought his best were AAF #9 or 13. Also thought I would illustrate the point I made a week ago with my copies. Even if you ignore the obvious appeal of #15 this is one of the finest runs of 14 books in Marvel's history.
  7. Just got this in hand, they must have really hammered it for that tiny piece off the upper right corner as it looks much better than 7.5.
  8. Not really. You’re basically asking everyone to do the work for you. Kirk has the deepest knowledge of these variants on these boards. Reading his posts is likely to give anyone the best understanding of these variants and which he has had the most difficulty finding. Revat was also correct that any recently added to the list are likely to be rare because they took so long to be recognized. All this, plus a healthy dash of “your mileage may vary” (due to what I have always wondered/suspected may be regional variability) gets you to an answer. If you were correct in your cynicism Kirk wouldn’t try nearly so hard to spend the money he does with fellow DCU enthusiasts.
  9. Thanks for the reports gents, I may have to consider this one next year if it becomes a regular thing.
  10. Speaking of sets, I am getting ready to move and am in the process of packing up the mancave (terrifying work). I uncovered several of the empty carcasses of some sets I obtained through a variety of sources, either sealed or unsealed, to get some books I didn't already have. For the sake of preserving the information, I scanned the backs of each set I had to provide lists of the contents (all of which were DCUs). Even though none of these is terribly uncommon, it may still be useful information to someone someday.
  11. Yes, it's unopened and I didn't want to take it out of the shrinkwrap it if it was worth more that way (not even for that 5-minute DC phone card). Thank you! I'd second Kirk's recommendation. The sealed set is much less common than the books contained within.
  12. it’s the latter. Even though I’m not going this year I’d hate to see this stop being a destination show for vintage books.
  13. for a worthy cause. We went to this last year and really enjoyed it. If you're on the fence about it, just sign up! You won't regret it.
  14. for a worthy cause. Wish I could make it this year...
  15. I just upgraded, so time to sell the undercopy to help pay for it! Shipping is included in the purchase price within the US. Shipping outside the US is fine, but buyer must pay anything over $10 US and shipping must be trackable to your location. Payment via Paypal, check or money order for US buyers. Paypal only for international buyers. No returns on CGC books, especially well photographed ones like this. If you have any questions please feel free to ask! Book was purchased slabbed, no idea on pressing history but I suspect it is unpressed. Tales of Suspense #14 CGC 7.0 Cream to Off-white -- asking $295 shipped Great book structurally, but a bit of edge tanning as you can see in the photos. The bottom spine on the back cover is a bit of a ding, not a stain, as seen in the last photo (and the reason I think the book is unpressed).
  16. Sorry, I was answering your question about on-site grading. They are not doing that. They attended last year to accept submissions for grading back in Sarasota. My guess is that it will be the same this year.
  17. They won’t. They’re exclusive with Reed now.
