  1. Ok, I asked questions about this same book in the restoration thread because I had no idea what happened to the back. Now that I get the feeling there is very little I can do about the back, how much does it bring the grade down? The front looks 9.6 - 9.8 but how much does the back drop it?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Overall I've had rotten luck with Whitman covers. I bought a bunch of them over the years inexpensively because of condition or in the case of several I bought at one time, they all had the same problem. Someone was not happy with the fact the issue number wasn't on the cover so they wrote them all in ink randomly so we wouldn't have to wonder what issue they were. :)

  3. check sales of other books that you can find in 10 grade that have sold and compare the increase to that of the same book in 9.8. Don't go just on that though. You have to factor in how hot the book is, how hard it is to get a 10 in that particular book (which you can look in the census and see how many there are), and other things like if it is a first appearance, will it be turned into a movie, etc.

  4. So based on your original post we are talking about category 3 the rest. If this is a huge piece of your collection and what you want to cull the most you have lots of options. Typically I look at sold lots on Ebay to find what something sold for in any given grade. I take that amount and figure that Ebay is taking 15-20% of that amount. It may not be necessarily true, but it gives me a starting point. If you see that the bulk of your books are falling on the slightly lower side and don't seem to be worth it, take category 1 and 3 and see what your local shop or a vendor at a show will give you just to get them out of your way so you can concentrate on the nice books. Cash value will be pennies on the dollar, but most shops or vendors will give you more in trade. If you take the trade value and turn it into a lot less category 2 books and you've still left meat on the bone for the vendor and you didn't have to spend all that time on figuring out what to do with a large portion of books. If you need something to do in retirement to keep busy looking through and selling books a few at a time isn't the worst way to stay active.

Basically just do what feels right and enjoy.

  5. There has to be 30 different books if not more from this signing on Ebay with prices all over the place. It will be interesting to see where the price settles in after say six months. Still waiting on my Celebrity Authentics copy to come in. Personally, just glad to have one.

Yeah, I was wondering as well...seems that he placed some kind of cone/circle template and used an airbrush to color the area white.  Not sure.

I've seen a lot of artists do this. Take a look back and you can find Mark Brooks examples on Spider-Gwen for sure. It looks like they paint a splotch and then go over it with the art work.

I would almost take that Phoenix to a show and ask him what it would cost to have him do waist to collar bone and make it a half-body sketch. Looks great either way!

Finally the missing piece of the puzzle has been complete. Special thanks for @Kevlar for getting Patrick Stewart to sign this. Also shoutout to Captured Collectibles and @inthehottub for getting the others.

Hoping that at some point I might be able to add the rest, but if not I can live with mine. Funny enough I just realized the label on mine is wrong, but I'll leave it alone. Frakes signed on 5/13 and Spiner and McFadden signed on 4/21.  Congrats on a complete book!

  9. No one particular vendor, you just need to keep an eye out for what's coming out in previews or keep up with what is coming out and grab the ones that you want. A lot of online and brick and mortar places will order more and give a better price if they have the money up front. Otherwise you take the risk that someone walks in and grabs the one or two copies they probably ordered.

Blanks from the beginning of the sketch cover era are hit and miss. Avengers #1 was great quality but Gen 13 #1 was pretty horrible. Most of the manufacturers have heard from enough people to know to do better these days than a glossy blank.

  10. Anyone know how this will work for those of us that ordered through Celebrity Authentics? I looked up my 9.8 pre-order and it hasn't been fulfilled yet, which isn't unexpected. I was just wondering if they would be behind all the ones sent in on other accounts.

Thx! yeah I was thinking about doing an 'everybody signs #1' Futurama book, but this seemed more interesting - also getting everyone to sign a single book would be a big hit to the wallet, and this seemed to lessen the blow, or at least slow it down over time lol

I couldn't find a good one for Phil LaMarr tho. I got a couple other Futurama sigs (my fav I think is Welker), but they're not singles on the census, so I posted them over in the Celebrity thread.

I thought the same thing when I started doing Dragonball voice actor signatures. I could fork out the money to get a number one and have multiple people sign it over and over or I could get individual books that are meant for the specific voice actor's character. In the end I decided to go with the multiple books and I've been very happy with the results so far!

  12. What worries me about the books I sent in is that I sent them through a dealer in town instead of sending them in directly. Turned out my three were all that store wound up sending in. He didn't even send in any for the store. With the fact that all these being sold by a dealer, is Arthur going to see these from a dealer and not put effort into them because he thinks they are just going to be put up for re-sale? I can tell you right now that Princess Leia, Wonder Woman and Catwoman won't be leaving my collection anytime soon if they are the same quality as the others. Just crossing my fingers at this point.

  13. In the scenario you are presenting, no it doesn't mean a thing to me, but let me give you another way to look at it. Say you collect your birth month books and you want the signer to sign on your birthday to mark the occasion. I've done this several times over the years and have signatures from Neal Adams, Stan Lee, and others that were signed at conventions on my birthdate. These are literally some of my favorite books just because of the date they were signed. :)

Hey, great question, I submitted a Longshot #1 Newsstand that was a GCG 9.8 and I asked for a drawing Spiral and Mojo creeping up behind him thinking that was shooting the moon.  Figured that would look great on that cover, wish I knew how elaborate he was getting and I would have asked for a Dazzler giving his leg the Princess Leia treatment too.  One day we'll get them back....

First signing he did I sent a Longshot 1 newsstand, came back with a 9.6 and a nice reasonable Longshot sketch. I almost sent it back for the Spiral and a press but decided not to chance it anymore than I had.
