  1. Looks like someone finally agreed with me, as when you look up the registry census report for the Direct Edition it says the book cannot be found.  It also appears that the census report for the 14th Print has increased pretty much by what the Direct Edition used to have listed.  So, if you had a Direct Edition it looks like it has been moved to the 14th print slot, although it does not allow you to add it to the slot for the 14th Print.  Not quite sure what will become of that book as far as the registry slot it belongs in.

When I go to Edit Set, it says there are no available comics, but, still shows the Cert # in the slot.

And here is the slot for the 14th print, that only shows 1 available comic for the slot.

here is the Set Listing that still shows the Direct Edition, as well as the 14th printing:

When you click on the  "See CGC'sCensus Report for this Comic", it says "Comic Not Found":

  2. Can you add the following to the Batman: The Killing Joke registry

Batman: The Killing Joke nn 1988 D.C. Comics Fourth Printing/BOMC Edition  (Cert# 2112773001)

United Kingdom Batman: The Killing Joke nn 1988 Titan Books U.K. Edition/Fourth Printing (Cert# 2112773002)

Italy Batman: The Killing Joke nn 4/97 Edizioni Play Press Italian Edition (Cert# 2112773006)

    Slots Created. Thank you

  3. Well, books are on the way back to me.  Looks like they did not pay attention to the notes I included about Newsstand variants.  It does appear that they acknowledged the BOMC variant, so, that is a good thing.  I had it at a 9.2-9.4 and it is coming back 9.6, so, happy with that.  The UK book was also a nice surprise as I had that as a 9,2.  Really thought the 10th print had a shot at 9.8, but, sadly not.  The 13th print (newwstand) is the only one I am really disappointed with.  Thought that and the 11th print (newwstand) would be in the 9.4-9.6 range.   Biggest letdown is that they don't appear to recognize the KJ newwstand variants.

4th Print Book of the Month Club Edition

    13th Print Newsstand Edition

So, my books are scheduled for grading.  They are showing the 4th Print BOMC on the list, but, not the newsstands.  Hoping they did not throw my attached notes away and will label these as newsstands.

  5. I submitted some of the newsstand issue.  Probably not going to grade very high, but, as long as they label them as Newsstand Editions I'll be happy.

4th Print Book of the Month Club Edition

    11th Print Newsstand Edition

    13th Print Newsstand Edition

    Also sent in

    UK Edition

10th Print (hoping for 9.8 on this one, to upgrade)

    Italian Edition

Depending on how they label the Newsstand Editions I may submit the 6th Print Newsstand for a re-holder and have them label it as a Newsstand Edition.

  6. My dad worked for a freight company and he used to bring bags home that were the perfect size for comics.  Don't know what the bags were for, but, they fit perfectly.  Didn't have any boards though.  This was in the early to mid 70's when I first started collecting.  Never heard or seen bags before, just happened to work out for me.  Wasn't until I went to my first comic book store that I saw them.

Appreciate everyone's support and those who have helped alert dealers  (Aszumilo<3).  Police and PI engaged, but due to current crisis, things can't move as fast as I would like, which I do understand.  Have some insurance, but not nearly enough to recover.  Storage lockers are a giant risk (please don't scold), but for many of us with limited options, that is our only choice.  Sad but true.

Take care all....will post on any new updates.

If you have a list of slab numbers, it might help to get that out to the local shops and maybe some of the big national dealers and auction houses.

  8. @truefan77d  This is the reply I got from Alternate Reality:

Oh noes, Andrew, I’m SO sad to hear this, as if a good person like you (or really anyone) needs to have something horrible like this happen along with all of the other sad / crazyness going on in the world / U.S. in these unimaginable times.

I will keep my ears and eyes open for anyone trying to sell what you’ve described. I haven’t had any calls for people trying to sell books since the lockdowns, I’m thinking that comic stores that are still around when the lockdowns are over are going to get a lot of calls from people trying to sell collections (thieves and non thieves).

Please let me know if you hear any developments on this.

     Sincerely, Ralph Mathieu

Hi everyone.  Thieves broke into my storage locker in Las Vegas and made off with around 3000 silver and bronze age books.  All boarded and bagged.  Many CGC slabbed,  Collection includes, X-Men 1-100, DD 1-100 and almost full runs of FF, Spider-Man and almost every good release thru mid 70's.  If anyone see's or hears of large collections being offered up, especially by someone appearing sketchy, please do the right thing and contact police or respond to this post.

Take care fellow comic brothers and sisters.  We all need to look out for each other.  Stay healthy!

I e-mailed Cosmic Comics, Maximum Comics, and Alternate Reality comics to let them know.

  10. This is the e-mail I got from my LCS.  In it they talk a little bit about the DC/Marvel thing

Alternate Reality Comics update: We're still ONLY doing MAIL ORDER (requests at ralphmathieu@gmail.com, we can mail what's in your file and or other wonderful comics & graphic novels we have in stock), thank you to those of you who have used our mail order service the past week.

Comic industry UPDATE: As you have probably heard last week, Diamond Comic Distribution announced that they're putting shipping new comics on PAUSE, which means no new comics this week. None of us know how long our lockdown PAUSES will be for. Diamond Comics doesn't know how long their PAUSE will be and they haven't updated us as to when they expect new comics will happen again as they have in the past.

Comics Industry UPDATE part 2: DC and Marvel HAVEN'T been great at communicating with comic store retailers & customers about what their plans are. DC & Marvel are working on a response, supposedly looking into alternative distribution and resuming before Diamond Comics is back from their PAUSE.

Ralph's perspective on what's going on in the comic book industry during this horrible virus: I firmly believe that DC, Marvel, and Diamond are working on what the best thing to do while cities / states are on lockdown and for what will happen after the lockdowns are over, there's a lot of variables, but their responses so far have just prompted more questions (again, I know they have a lot of concerns that need to be addressed and they want to be thorough in their future responses). But I also FIRMLY believe that any means DC or Marvel use to get their titles back to stores while lockdowns are happening is WRONG. This will create a bigger divide of have and have nots among stores and really hurt the retail base, especially when the lockdowns are over. The sports industry and Hollywood are on complete PAUSE, why can't the comic book industry do this!? People shouldn't have to worry about keeping up with new comics during lockdowns and not knowing what their situations will be after the lockdowns.

Thank you for your patronage of Alternate Reality Comics over this past 25 years (and eight years prior when my store was called Dungeon Comics then owned first by Steve Marino and then by Blake Phillips, who passed the torch on to me back in 1995), I certainly hope to see many of your happy faces when we're over our lockdown periods for many more years. Any sharing of this would be appreciated so that more people within the comic industry can see that a lot (probably most from what I'm seeing and hearing from fellow comic store owners) of comic store owners want printing and publishing to be on PAUSE while the lockdowns are happening.

I, Ralph, and Team Alternate hope that all of you are well and safe.

CONGRATS to my opponent aszumilo  [62] !! :headbang:

I had 55.  This post is primarily aimed at Newbies and those continuing to define their grading skills.  I have been grading comic books pretty much all my life...with long gaps in between...but love to grade books.  Obviously you look at the book initially and have a general sense of the grade...at least LG...MG...or HG...now you've narrowed it down and you have a 1/3 chance of being the right grade if you are in the right category.  If you're not in the right category, go back to square one and get a grading lesson.  So I figure I'm generally there, and I give 2 grades within one grade of each other...my initial grade (thought) and then the next grade either up or down.  So for example with the ETERNALS book I went 9.8/9.6.  Saw the chip on the corner and thought 9.4? but went 9.6. (shrug)

After I look at the large scans...which I find, for me, can be plus/minus beneficial or detrimental to my initial grade thoughts...I sometimes introduce a third grade...taking the nudge grade a further grade.  For the other books GR I went 7.5, 8.0 and then after the large scan 7.0 and went 7.0.  FAIL. :tonofbricks:

For the HS book went 8.0/7.5 and picked the "wrong" grade. :frustrated:

For the SME I went 5.0/5.5...large scans flipped me back to 4.5 (and thinking possibly 4.0 but figuring CGC will give nudge for being an older book).  Went 4.5 with another near miss. :pullhair:

So was pretty close on all 4 books...but as luck would have it no Bullseyes...and in this case a losing score in a grading contest.  But still a lot of fun and still, for me, helping me know I still have a pretty good sense of grading a book.  And I encourage all participants, "losers" or otherwise...there will be only one winner...to contribute to the prize thread...that's a lot of fun as well...

Something doesn't add up here.  My opponent shows as

    image.png.c7a084e0be2b8ed3fc24e8646a10e4cb.png

But, I have no score listed.

    Your opponent is shown as

    image.thumb.png.96a73bea4e57a58b3d6786913cff45bd.png

His score is what my score is (and as you posted)

Not sure what is going on here.  Gonna have to go to the replay and see what the refs say.
