  1. The lesson learned here is not all CGC 9.8 books are created equal. Buy the book and not the label. Of course, one could wonder why some of the nicer looking 9.8s are not 9.9s, but that's a conversation for another day.
  2. The book wasn't switched out. The new cases are pretty much tamper-proof. if it was opened, it would be very obvious. I'm thinking the grade is also legit and the book wasn't damaged inside the case. The corners, while somewhat unsightly, would be considered bindery tears by CGC and thus A-Okay on a 9.8 book. Is this worth a return to the seller? Well, if the book wasn't damaged in transit and there aren't any shenanigans with tampering then it seems like you got exactly what you paid for - a comic graded CGC 9.8. If CGC didn't grade this one strict enough, I'm not sure how that's on the seller.
  3. If you're just going to submit it to CGC anyway, then why not just buy one already graded by CGC? If it's to crack and store raw, then that's reasonable and something I've done before.
  4. So it seems CGC has at least a couple different inner well designs. I prefer the one pictured below with the recessed well and the slots at the corner. This style keeps the book centered (off-center slabbed books drive me crazy) and also seems to minimize Newton rings. Question - Is it possible to request this inner well style when having books graded/reholdered and, if so, what is this style called so I can note it on my submission forms?
  5. And sometimes a preview isn't really a preview. For example, Planetary Preview in Gen13 #33 and C-23 #6 pre-dates Planetary #1. However, the "preview" in the Gen13 and C-23 books isn't a preview at all, but an original story that was not featured in the subsequent Planetary #1. Gen13 #33 and C-23 #6 is the 1st appearance of Planetary by any definition. CGC claims it is Planetary #1 which is wrong wrong wrong.
  6. The Ms. Marvel story was not reprinted in any other comic. It only appears in this issue and is collected later on for the HC/TPBs. Is ANMN Point One a promotional comic meant to hype up Marvel's new releases of the time? Yes. Is it a preview by definition? No.
  7. This book isn't a preview. ANMN Point One features the 1st Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel story and differs from the story featured in Ms. Marvel #1. Honestly, I like this book more than Captain Marvel #17 2nd print in the long term despite what the current market value dictates. ANMN Point One is the 1st full appearance of the character, in a story, as opposed to a couple of wonky cameos and one cover appearance on a reprint.
  8. Avengers #675 & #676 NM $8 x1 Justice League #1 NM $5 x3 Space Ghost #1 (Comic) NM+ $5
  9. I had this happen on my last prescreen invoice. One book was slabbed 9.6 even though the prescreen was set at 9.8. I called CGC and they refunded me the difference between the slabbing fee and reject fee.
  10. I hope this turns out to be a bubble, because I'm not a fan of variant covers in general. 50/50 ratios are fine, but I wouldn't mind if incentive variants and limited edition runs go away.
  11. Just received my second to last new comics order from DCBS. Not completely terrible, but not perfect either as a couple books have some obvious handling wear including a tear on one. Not worth my time to fight DCBS for a credit I won't be able to use, but I can't wait for my next shipment to arrive so my business with them can be done.

  13. Any tips on the best way to cut open the inner well?
  14. Shouldn't a 9.6 be a 9.6 regardless of age? Setting aside printing defects which the wear on this Avengers 1 doesn't fall into, a 9.6 Silver Age shouldn't have any more defects than a 9.6 Modern Age. It seems CGC is hammering the grades on moderns (I've sent a few in recently that looked like no-brainer 9.8s and received 9.6 labels) and giving a pass to older books. I'd like it to be consistent.
  15. Hi, I'd like to requests a few label updates for Runaways from Marvel. With the popularity of the HULU series, I think it's a good time to update the labels for these key issues: Runaways #13 (05/04) 1st Appearance of the Gibborim Runaways #17 (10/04) "Death" of Alex Wilder Runaways #1 (04/05) 1st Appearance of Victor Mancha Runaways #5 (08/05) Ultron revealed as the father of Victor Mancha Runaways #7 (10/05) 1st Appearance of Xavin Runaways #27 (08/07) 1st Appearance of Klara Prast Runaways #11 (08/09) "Death" of Old Lace; 1st Appearance of Hunter Stein Thanks!
  16. I don't care what he charges per signature, but it should be the same regardless of what issue it is.
  17. As mentioned above, you'll probably be fine but if you're still worried then I would suggest consigning through MyComicShop.
  18. This is somewhat of an unlikely scenario since the a great deal of value in the book comes with the 9.8 label which would be lost if the buyer swaps the book. In this scenario, they would have to crack the slab open (not easy), remove the book without damaging it and submit to CGC for regrading. Then wait 1-2 months and hope the book retained the original grade. That's a lot of work for a potential scammer.
  19. As long as the corner posts are intact, the slab itself is fine. The smudges are likely on the inner well and won't hurt the book despite being an eye sore.
